Hell Yeah.....Lloyd Carr might retire next week from Michigan

LB,
LSU will be fine. Plenty of good coaches will want that job.....Jimbo Fisher, their current OC Gary Crowton, their current DC in Bo Pellini if he doesn't take the Nebraska job.

You just listed the very reasons for Miles to go. It is an easier path to a BCS title at Michigan. He aint going to win every year in the SEC which means mad LSU fans. At Michigan he got a 50-50 chance or better to win the Big 10. His only serious competition will be Ohio State. Maybe Illinois now that Zook is recruiting his arse off there. Wisconsin and Iowa and maybe Purdue raise their heads to challenge every so often. Penn State is done until Joe Pa retire.

See the problem of being loaded at LSU raises the expectation. Plus because of the man at Alabama, LSU folks want another championship and are more rabid about it than Michigan fans. Michigan fans are more astute about winning. They want to beat OSU and win the Big 10 and sure they like to win a National Title. But you will not get run off for not winning a National Title. Those LSU fans will want Miles gone if he stays and don't win a NC with that talent this year or next. His alma mater will provide him with less pressure. Beat Ohio State at least half of the time and win a few Big 10 titles and actually win your bowl games will go a long way at Michigan. Even Tressel actually has less pressure at Ohio State than Miles does. All he had to do was beat Michigan, win bowl games and get to the national championship which he has done twice and won once. Now if Saban had stayed at LSU he would have not had the pressure. Since he had won a title for them.

Nope anybody thinks that Miles should stay at LSU or Michigan is setting him up to fail. Now if he win the National Title this year......then maybe just maybe he should think about not going to Michigan. But if he slips or stumbles in the SEC title game or the BCS title game......he better get out of BR as fast as he can to Ann Arbor. Either way if I was him I bolt. He is a Michigan man.....aint like he would be leaving LSU for Louisville. No matter how tough the SEC is.......Michigan is still a more prestigious job than LSU. Aint nothing like coaching at your alma mater if they want you. Especially if you can lead them to a NC.

That's because LSU isn't used to winning LOL. But seriously, I wouldn't say that our fanbase is less rabid when it comes to winning, just that the AD and administration aren't as readily swayed by fan sentiment compared to other schools. You know as well as anyone that most Michigan fans wanted Carr gone for years, especially after the 2005 season. But, most of us also understood that Bill Martin (the AD) would probably never fire him. That's just the way it works at Michigan, they make moves when they feel like it, they kept Amaker as basketball coach for 2 years after most people wanted him gone. He would have had to have a momumental collapse of a season to get fired, which is pretty much impossible for Michigan or Ohio State in the Big Te(leve)n. He did win a title there, something even Bo never accomplished. Actually, Bo pretty much aimed to win conference titles, Carr was much the same way.

In some ways, Carr does get a bit of a bad rap, and I've been as big a critic of his as anybody. Despite his recent struggles with bowls and Ohio State, he was the 7th winningest active coach in terms of winning percentage. Michigan is the winningest program of all time in terms of wins and winning percentage, and he actually increased that percentage. He won 75% of his games, won a national title, his players graduated, and the program didn't have a hint of a scandal. Like I said in another thread, his biggest problem was his loyalty (kinda like Pete), both to assistants and to players. I give Henne credit for trying to gut it out this past weekend, but he had no business out there playing with a separated throwing shoulder. Still, Lloyd thought he deserved one last crack at OSU. It was probably time for him to move on, and probably the best move for the program. It's never good when retirement rumors start to linger (see JoePa at Penn State or Bowden at Florida State), the program usually suffers.

I wouldn't go, but I understand if he did. I certainly wouldn't say it was set up to fail if he stays. You can't be a national power and not be under pressure. When people expect you to win, you have to produce. I really don't know if you can recruite the talent you need to guarantee high probability of winning in a National Championship game when you are in those cold states. But, if you can recruit you can recruit, it is just harder in some locations than others.

My point about LSU is I don't know if they can seize another coach that can take them to National Championships. They will lose recruits to Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, Notre Dame, USC, etc... if they aren't in the hunt for the National Championship. Once that happens, they will become the Georgia of the SEC, contenders for the conference title, but honorable mention in the National Title race, like Texas has done.

Peace...

So LB you would turn your Alma mater down.......even though Michigan is more historic than LSU? Turn down the challenge to lead your school to a National Championship and get paid big bucks and coach in a soon to be renovated Big House? I mean look how Spurrier took his alma mater to a title. You Steve got satisfaction in doing that and if he had not been tempted to go to the NFL, he would have stayed there.

I just think Miles would be a fool to not go to Michigan if they want him. If he was not a Michigan man, then I might say stay. But you already know..........LSU fans are not that enamored with him as it is. Let him not win with all this talent. At least at Michigan he has a better chance to be 9-2 or 10-1 yearly. He gone mess around and not take the Michigan job and get fired at LSU for not being Saban. Let him not win the NC this year or next with the LSU talent they stockpiled. Its going to get ugly in BR. Then he gone wish he had left.

LSU will be fine in recruiting. Plenty of good coaches will leave their schools for LSU. Hell Dennis Erickson would leave Arizona State for LSU. Miles aint the end all be all for them. Like I said........some LSU folks hope he takes the Michigan job because they think he is too conservative of a coach. Ton of good coaches out there that can win at LSU. LSU will never have trouble recruiting now. They will not hire low profile coaches like they did in the past. So they will be fine. As long as they don't hire Charlie Weis. LOL.

I would turn them down if it meant I could start my own legacy at a powerhouse like LSU. If he wins the Championship this year he will have the Nick Saban monkey off his back definately. Him going to Michigan would mean that he'd have the pressure of living up to Bo and Carr not to mention that he'd have to beat Ohio State (who has more talent and better coaching).

Like PschoJag said below, it depends. If I could have my own legacy somewhere else, no. If I could win the NC sooner at LSU, probably not. However, I do agree with you that he is no god in BR as Seban was. Saban put them where they felt they should be as far back as the middle 80s when we were at SU and they were getting their butts handied to them trying to play and SEC schedule and Miami and Florida State. smh... So, Saben became their Moses that actually took them to the promise land and then abandoned them. Miles was very fortunate to land the job. But, I wouldn't want just any coach and I don't think their are a lot of coaches that can continue to be a national power. So, it is risky from LSU's perspective to believe they can get 3 of them in a row after trying so hard for so long. If it his Miles desire to go home and coach someday, he can't pass it up. But, if he believes what he has been saying recently in wanting to coach a program that is his, he want and will accept the challenge and risk of rising up to meet the challenge of the high expectations placed upon him. I can respect either decision as long as it is a decision lead by his heart. I don't think it is a wrong or right for him. I think would be smart of LSU to not let him go unless someone knows someone else with as clean of an image and as good of a coaching level that will come to them. There is no way in the world I would mess with Dennis Erickson. They don't need him to build their program by any means necessary. Miami made that mistake and they haven't been the same sense. Arizona State will be on some form of probation soon. He can't help but cheat and get caught. Personally, I don't think Less can lose, but I believe LSU better be real smart about if they can risk him getting away or not.

Peace...
