Our game in Orlando is on that Sunday.....

Like you said, possible....... but not probable.....

The band directors are PIMPING these students for that almighty dollar... Depending on the amount of the payout, I wouldnt be suprised to see JSU there. They would probably leave Orlando right after the game and be DOG TIRED riding from Florida to Ga.... then perform in ATL and head back to Mississippi. That would be a killer schedule and it would take a week to recuperate from that bus ride.

I'd agree with you, Dahill... Our band students are getting pimped. Not just at JSU, but all over... The NCAA forbids schools from paying student athletes, but the bigger PWCs get around this by lavishing goods and services on student athletes based on the financial windfall the students generate.... Personally, I'd love to see the Boom go to several BOTBs and other events, and then get rewarded (in the spring) with a trip somewhere (paid for by proceeds from the BOTBs they participated in). At least this way, the kids can see the fruits of their labor....

But how it is now, the kids get nothing..... bus a bus ride and the opportunity to say they travelled somewhere (which ain't saying nothing).

:smh:

I think our bands need a Student Advocate, somebody who represents/lobbies/negotiates on the band students' behalf. This person wouldn't be a band director, but would be a college faculty member with no ties to the band program, other than representing the interests of the students... Because right now, other than staging a mutiny, band students really have no 'voice' within their respective programs.... The kids go wherever and do whatever the directors decide.

I know its Sunday afternoon, but they would have to leave on Sunday (after the game) That's why I HIGHLY doubt it.
*The botb is scheduled at 1pm on Monday* :smh: I just can't see them hitting the road like that, so soon. I hope they stay One more night in Orlando and Head out early Monday driving home to JSU!

Actually Jackson State is in, if the event still goes on... It's been confirmed. :smh:

I've been sayin that for years CJ. These band members are STUDENTS first... not BAND MEMBERS first. Some of these directors are willing to subject the students to rediculous schedules at the risk of them lackin' in their studies... being physically exhausted... and H*LL EVEN DELIVERING A SUB-PAR PERFORMANCE as a result ... all to make dollar$$$. .... (Agreeing to do a BOTB after 4 days of band camp send help).... :smh: Where does it end?

FAMU is bad for it... I had a friend in FAMU's band tell me that during one 3 week period they were in Tally an average of 3 days a week....other than that they were on the road.

New leadership is needed.... Not just the Director of Bands, but the Department Chair also....

What are their other choices for funds? With decreasing budgets especially for the arts, and I don't think football proceeds goes towards band. I think the directors have a hard time of finding funds to subsidize their current budget. what if football ticket sales were like church where you can elect how much your your offering is to go to the building fund, or missions. I would split mine 50-50 between football and the marching band.

If they are paying us, i say let's go. I don't think JSU accepts any and all invites. I would hope that we only accept the ones where the money is right. However, SU never does battle of the bands and they are probably the only HBCU that travels to all away games.

I'll never forget in '88 we (Gram) went to Tokyo and as SOON as we checked into the hotel we were told to get ready to roll out! Keep in mind that we had been flying for more than 20 hours and were stinkin and dawg tired! Whoever was paying for this wanted to see us therefore we had to perform...

The question everyone is asking is how did the organizers manage to get JSU and SU in this together?

I'll be there. Tickets getting purchased next weekend. They're only $10 each.

TP, It was Doc Greggs who never wanted to do those battle of the bands. He thought there was not enough money in it, plus he felt like he had nothing else to prove. I can't say what Mr. Jackson will do.......he is trying to create his own legacy with the Jukebox. So if it is financially feasible, I would not be shocked to see them do those BOTBs now that he is in charge.

You are correct about SU traveling to all our games. It has been that way as long as I can remember. But it is budgeted along with the football travel. When Casem became our AD back in 86..........he put band travel in the budget. Before then, Doc had to make things happen. Which he did.

Uh........those folks at AAMU will beg to disagree. So will the folks at Texas Southern. Also does Gram travel to Valley when it is their turn to go to Itta Bena. Not smacking, just never heard about the World Famed going to Valley.

they came here once...in 06... AAMU went there once in 05... The only bands I havent seen in Crews are Texas So and PV.

I don't see where you getting your info! TXSU and GSU have seen each other every year for many many years! Yes the band goes to Valley and AAMU and they are going this year also! How Grambling works: if the opposing band doesn't make a visit to GSU, then the World Famed will not do a return trip or they would miss a game or two if they had other engagements but with the new President he makes sure the band travels to every game and they have been doing so since 05! Though AAMU didn't come to Grambling in 07, the band is still making a trip to AAMU this year! I say fock em if they don't come to you but the powers that be think otherwise! Grambling Band had to change the dates of some money making events in order for them to travel to Valley and AAMU, that was one of the reasons why the band didn't go to those schools in the past!

...are not the same thing.

I know my band rarely does away games, but I can only think of one band in the SWAC that truly makes all away games year in, year out.

Back on the topic:
Congrats to all that are going. If I can rub a few more pennies together, I may make that trip for Labour Day...

Exactly Frat.........I didn't want to get into either. Gram has not consistently gone to all their away games unless it is a classic. SU goes no matter if we get a return visit or not. No stipulations. I remember the AAMU folks on here saying Gram asked them to pay for the band to come to Huntsville. I also lived in Houston when Gram would not come to Houston when they played TxSU. The TxSU bruhs would always comment on that. So if they have just recently started going to every game then that is news to me.

Cool!

I would like to see all bands be able to do that. Both bands make the game atmosphere better.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jackson take SU to the Honda, just to break the mic on Honda BOTB's. Folks been waiting on the "S" to dawn the dome. If it's reported that SU was going...that'll refresh the Honda.

I can see Jackson doing it...but,....*shrugs*...who knows. But, you'll probably be seeing more of SU in these BOTB's.
