HBCU Graduation Ceremonies

After hearing about another HBCU graduation this past weekend, I have a simple question:

Are your graduates getting up and leaving graduation before the ceremony ends?

I went to a graduation ceremony at Alabama A&M this weekend. I haven't noticed any graduates leaving the stadium early, but I have notice some of them going into the audience looking for their families after they already walked across the stage while the program is still going on. I have also noticed some families leaving early, but I figured because it looked like it was going to pour down at any moment. A&M holds its graduate in it's football stadium.

My mother attended Alcorn's graduation a couple of weeks ago, and she said she noticed how graduates were walking around during the ceremony (after they got their degrees) and taking pictures with their families.
She also said some graduates didn't have on dress shoes but had on sandals (the ones that look like flip flops).

KB's right.

Thankfully, the rain held off until about 20-30 minutes after the graduates had exited after the exercises. Bad thing was, the traffic was horrible getting out of there to the west (Parkway) and the east (Meridan St.)
If not for the threat of rain, those folks that peeled outta there would have most likely stayed around to hug and take pics with the graduates.

Why would they allow them to do this??????? I Pray this is not true

I hope this isn't true but our lack of decorum runs rampant even among the best and brightest of us.I'm so afraid that it is true.Outlandish celebrations should be restrained until the activities are over and parents in attendance should demand that.

My mother was there to witness it. She ain't got to lie.
She was wondering if this was something that was maybe allowed now, which is why she asked me about it.

Naw it's not allowed but it's to the point can it be contained? I think it can in some instances but in others it's really a lost cause. When I graduated in 98 from high school my class did just about everything unimaginable that night. My sister told me she was so embarassed they could hear us out on the field on the announcer. There was no self-control with these kids and I attended a majority white school.

I have not seen this but it does not surprise me. It seems tradition and respect are quickly fading away from our society.

I can only imagine the lack of decorum at graduations at "other" colleges.

When I finished Auburn, my folks wanted me to participate in the "ceremony". I did.

It was unlike any other graduation I had ever seen. :smh:

The grads popping champagne--during the "ceremony"
beach balls being tapped all over the place
no processional or recessional by the grads, just the faculty
(grads just came in, before the "ceremony" started and took a seat anywhere on the coliseum floor)
no graduation speaker (that was a good thing though LOL )

and mind you, this was over 10 years ago :scared:
I can only imagine how it is now

...my kids mother was at Bama States ceremony March 7th; and she said that most of the students got their degree and left the Acadome before the ceremony was over. She said one student stopped in the middle of the stage and took a pic with the Speaker("Tommy" from Martin). But overall, she was just sayin how the overall rudeness of the students and family members were.

Now this type stuff aint just Bama State; A&M and many other HBCU's prolly have the same rude stuff happening as well......but aint nuthin we can do about it. I mean what can you do? Lock somebody up for cheering out loud, shooting fireworks, etc. on celebrating their graduation.

Wow, this really surprises me....I thought it was mandatory that the graduates remain seated until the ceremony was over. At least, that's how it was, when I graduated. Times have really changed.

And did I see someone post that folks are wearing sandals to the ceremony? Lord, have mercy. :smh:

Yes, times have changed. We're in such a relaxed, overly-sensitive and nonchalant world now. :smh:

And YES, my moma saw some graduates with some flip-flops on. :smh:

It is still that way at SU. Dr Jackson give that same speech Dr Spikes used to give about decorum.

Now...when I went to Loyola's graduation...it was crazy. People just went up and got their diplomas and walked straight out the door.

My boy got his degree from 'Skegee on May 8. :jump: :jump:

No grads left their seats before the end of the program and the students were pretty well behaved. They were given the clue at the rehearsal. There were a few young ladies who had on flip flops and I won't even mention the numerous pairs of stilletto heels that these girls couldn't walk on. :smh: One joker who had on sneakers was pulled from the line. :shame:

As Mighty Hornet said, you ain't seen nothing until you've been to a large state school commencement. That mess at U-Michigan is unlike anything you've ever seen. You would think you're at a fball game where a commencement program broke out. It's unbelieveable... :retard:

Yeah, it is much worse at the PWC graduations. Like MH said, I have seen beach balls and all kinds of things going on. At Gram, it is more traditional but there is always someone who slips up every once and a while.

I will go on record and predict that graduation ceremonies are gonna become extinct in the next 20-30 years because of poor behavior. They'll end up mailing diplomas and degrees to students at home.
I didn't participate in my masters graduation held 21 years ago at UGA.They mailed it to me upon request.

I saw that very thing at my nephew's graduation from UNC- Greensboro in 2001.

While I don't like seeing our kids mingling out in the audience while their fellow classmates are receiveing their degrees, it's nothing compared to what goes on at these PWCs. I saw a kid at Alabama pull a skateboard from under his gown, and ride it across the stage to receive his degree.

The president had a look on his face that said "I'm going to KILL you!:redhot:"
My mouth dropped to the floor!!

Yeah, very true, and I'll be walking in December, I'm sure my family will appreciate all the madness.... :smh:

Someone mentioned Bama State, AAMU, Alcorn and some other none SWAC schools. I am interested in how the other other SWAC schoool graduatins were, especially UAPB. I have a classmate to attend but I have not mentioned it to him.
SWAC how was your graduation? Were any the old dignified affair (that it should be)?
