HBCU Basketball: December 7 - December 13

Correction in 1993 the championship game was finished after the selection show and j state had Linsey hunter and had beat some food programs that year so the committee jsut assumed that they would be in the tournament but what had happened was su won the game got jstates seed and beat Georgia tech j state did go on to the nit and won a game their

So you are saying the selection committee had already inked in Jackson State for the automatic bid before the SWAC tournament was decided, therefore giving SU the automatic bid spot that Jackson State was supposed to have filled? I do believe you were watching a NCAA Selection Show/bracketology folks that made a final prediction before the final bracket was completed and the NCAA Selection Committee, which is different made the final determination AFTER ALL conference tournaments were final. In the 80's and 90's, SWAC schools were all playing on a level where it was anyone's game when they played each other. I still remembered in the 80's during the Avery Johnson years, SU went a whole season undefeated at home and during that same time they held the longest home winning streak in the country. SWAC basketball was a lot better in the 80's and 90's than it has been recently. It appears that SWAC basketball is now on the verge of getting back to the same level of play during the 80's and 90's. In addition to SU's upset win over Georgia Tech in 1993, the SWAC had some near upsets over a few number 1 seeded teams in the 80's and 90's.

No, the conference championship game was decided AFTER the NCAA Selection show. I remember Coach Stoglin trying in vain to get them to move the game up because he felt that JSU team at least had a chance(slim but still) at an automatic bid even if we lost the championship game. When the seeding was announced, they actually had JSU/SU in that 13th bracket. That 13th seed was given with JSU in mind.

And SU earned it by winning the conference championship. I'm sure the NCAA didn't expect SU to get passed Georgia Tech either. There were a few times in 80's when SU won the regular season title, but lost the SWAC tournament. We thought SU should have gotten a NCAA tournament invite due to our regular season record and title, but didn't. Never has the NCAA invited two SWAC schools to participate in the tournament in the same year. There's only ONE automatic bid for the SWAC and that goes to the SWAC tournament champion, which is why I stated in my previous post, "if SU win the SWAC tournament and make it into the NCAA tournament, how high would they get seeded?"

No one disputes that fact.

But somehow it was made to seem like SU didn't earn that seeding and the NCAA had already inked in JSU before the SWAC tournament was completed. In your post, at least you did show where the NCAA's selection committee had SU/JSU inked in that spot before the SWAC tournament final game, which means both teams WERE INKED in.

They were both in that slot because the committee knew it would come down to either of them. But the 13th seed was an acknowledgement of JSU's strength that year. SU benefited with a more favorable seed than they would've otherwise gotten. I doubt such a thing could happen nowadays because our champion is decided well in advance of the selection and basically just hopes to avoid the playin game.

Wrong.....Both teams were strong that year. We got the 13th seed based off of our body of work.

Somebody tried to correct my post when my original question was, "could this team get a higher seed that the 1993 team received?" Nothing in my original post had anything to do with how SU received a higher than normal seed that year. What it sounds like, some people like to insert themselves into a conversation by stating something that is totally unrelated to the question. My question has everything to do with how high this year's team could get seeded versus the 1993 team and nothing to do with how the 1993 team got such a higher than normal tournament seeding. Please read my original post below and tell me if I said anything on how SU received a higher than normal seed in the 1993 tournament.

This team appears to be on the same track as 1993 team, when no one expected them to beat Georgia Tech in the NCAA tournament. The question is, if this team wins the SWAC tournament, can they get a higher seeding in the NCAA tournament versus the 1993 team?

Both teams were strong but it was JSU who had national attention winning and competing well OOC that season. SU had a strong team but the committee thought JSU would win the tourney and thus the #13 seed went to the SWAC before the champion was determined.

The champion of the tourney was inked. However, it was ASSUMED jsu would win it. Oh well. That same tourney, SU women were upset. They should've represented too.

My original question pertained to how high SU could possibly get seeded this year if they win the SWAC tournament, but not how or why the 1993 team got seeded higher than normal. Some impostor with the profile name of JAG came on here trying to correct my post when there was nothing to correct. I'm sure it probably was someone from that school in Jackson, MS. LOL!!!! Go back and read my original post about seeding and tell if I said anything about how SU received a higher than normal seeding in 1993.

I suggest whoever made that post trying to correct me on something that wasn't wrong in the first place to go watch ESPN's Two Part Series Documentary on Black Magic. SU appears in that documentary several times with documentary parts on Bob Love, Ben Jobe, Avery Johnson, Bobby Phillips, and that 1993 team that upset Georgia Tech in the NCAA tournament.

Here's the first part of Part 1. I'm sure you can find the rest if you click on the youtube link.

And just to help those out who can't find the right parts, here they are:
