BIRMINGHAM - Alabama A&M's secondary, perhaps as improved as any unit in the country during the regular season, didn't look the part here Saturday against Grambling in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game.

But there was a good reason for that.
The Bulldogs, who trailed just 3-0 at intermission, played the entire second half without starting free safety Levernonte Turner. The Birmingham native was ejected from the game after delivering a big hit on Thyron Anderson late in the first half on a ball that was clearly uncatchable.
A&M coach Anthony Jones took offense to the call.
''For them to make that call . . .,'' Jones said. ''My kids aren't dirty. I'll go on record and say it.
''Not only will I go on record to say it, I can prove it. My kids aren't dirty. What (the official) said my kid did was a dirty play. My kids aren't dirty.''
With Turner out of the middle of A&M's secondary, GSU quarterback Bruce Eugene had a field day in the final 30 minutes as the Tigers came away with a 31-19 victory to secure their third straight title.
Eugene threw for 413 yards and three touchdowns. He had thrown for just 201 yards in the Tigers' 23-13 win over the Bulldogs three months ago in Huntsville.
''We missed Levernonte a lot,'' said defensive back Henry Freeman, who also missed some playing time with cramps.
''They wore us down. The blitzes didn't get to him and when they did, we didn't make the plays. They took advantage of the opportunities they had.''
''Anytime you lose a guy with speed like Levernonte, it's going to hurt you,'' inside linebacker Jamaal Ware said.
In A&M's case, it hurt the Bulldogs dearly.
Defensive coordinator Brawnski Towns replaced Turner with backup free safety Wesley Bynam, but the move failed to pay dividends.
''We thought we would be able to hold up, but on a couple of plays, (Bynam) didn't take away the inside and gave up two touchdowns,'' Towns said. ''We didn't have enough depth in the secondary.
''Losing Levernonte cost us big time.''
Bynam started the season at strong safety, but after he got hurt in the early going, Martel Holt came on and played so well that Towns moved him to free safety.
''It's my job to come in and fill in,'' Bynam said. ''I made some mistakes and I hate it came in this game.''
Tramon Douglas beat Bynam on a 23-yard touchdown pass that gave Grambling an 18-11 advantage early in the fourth quarter. He was also beaten on the two-point conversion pass.
''We kept good pressure on them,'' Ware said. ''When Levernonte left the game, they exploited that area.''
Towns said Turner had made a similar play earlier in the season against Southern, but was called for pass interference and not ejected.
''It wasn't a flagrant foul,'' Towns said. ''He shouldn't have been ejected.''
