We just had a lot of talent back then but no one to coach them. Coach Kimble was a he!! of a recruiter. I remember one year when we had 5 players drafted in the first three rounds and lsu only had three the entire draft but our record was like 6 and 5.

Yep your right jag4life but guess what. The other schools are putting them in there. So as far as I'm concern that's just a cop out we as HBCU fans are to ready to give coaches who want big bucks but give mediocre results.

If you recruit the right young men and you have a staff that actually "TEACHES" technique it can be done, it's being done every year by others who at one time didn't even come close to us.
 



I really don't understand Southern fans. How are trying to hold Pete to a standard that makes no sense.?NFL Players as a requirement for a coaching job? Come on Bluedog, that makes no sense. SU is losing recruits because our facilities and commitment to our program sucks. Let's put the blame where it is. The man has won with nothing while everybody else made improvements in facilities and renewed their commitment to their program while we were giving lip service and building a press box. It's not just Pete, but look at Cador. Now that the SWAC is starting to catch up SU in baseball, 2 years from now, you will be ready to run him off. Pete doesn't owe the community ****. His job is to win football games and he has done that. We don't play in the playoffs, we have no desire to play for the 1-AA national championship, so why in the world should it be important to be ranked high in the 1-AA poll. You can't piss on the "white folks" system then want your coach to be judged by it. Pete knows that SU is jerking his chain with these promises to build facilites and he knows that in 2 years, he will not be able to get a third string running back for North Iberville with them. Continual improvements at JSU, SLU, Grambling, and the Texas Schools will rob him of his talent bases in New Orleans, and Southeast Louisiana and Houston has been gone for 3 years now. So, I don't blame the man for his concern. He will not have his facilities 3 years from now and SU will have him watching the dorm for living by then. They will find another sucker happy to say he coaches at SU and then watch him get skull drugged for 2 years until the fieldhouse (that Pete built by winning) open only to watch someone else recruit and rebuild the program with it.

We (myself included) need to get our heads out our asses and try and understand that nobody gives a damn about our politics and home grown silliness. Pete is about business and his lawyers are doing a good job of making sure that his ass is protected against what is an oblivious attempt by SU to hide the knife they are going to use to cut his throat when he doesn't get what was promised to him, and his team suffers for it.

Like getting off his but and doing a better public relations job for S. U.

Besides, we were putting more then that in the NFL during the Marino Casem and Gerald Kimble days. Anyway that would be my criteria.

Pete's lawyers are doing a great job of getting this issue into the court of public opinion (as evidenced here). This is putting some heat on Southern to get the deal done in time. I personally don't believe facilities will be completed in time. Shid. My sister was at SU in 95 and the union closed...why did it reopen in summer 2000 when i was a freshman???

You're right, Cador should be the main person complaining about a lack of support. He's probably the coach with the best national reputation (It doesn't hurt having two 1st round picks in back-to-back season and personally responsible for turning SU's top WR into a pro baseball prospect).

SU needs to get off their arses and build the facilities post haste...also compromise with Pete because this is hurting recruiting.

I do not think any coach on God?s earth ?gets? all the recruits he wants. When coaches are recruiting, it is a chance that they are taking that a recruit will sign on the dotted line. Look at LSU, they have the best facilities in Louisiana, and they still have players that left the state to play football elsewhere. Marshall Faulk, Warrick Dunn, Travis Minor, and Kordell Stewart to name a few.


Therefore, I do not think athletes will ?flock? to SU because of ?nice? facilities.

When ever they build these facilities(hopefully in March like promised) there should be no excuss for Southern not getting top athletes in state. Besides LSU , we already have the top fan base in state, best playing surface, best tailgaiting, best traveling fans, and best tradition,along with grambling. The only thing schools use against us is our work out facilities.So if when we get our complex there should be not one excuse.

My point is, today's student-athletes' have choices where they want to play ball and for various reasons I might add.

BTW, this is not my quote (SU is losing recruits because our facilities and commitment to our program sucks.)

We know that..................hence, the reason why upgrades are needed to be competitive in recruiting wars. Without good facilities your chances are greatly diminished (but I think you know this).

The only reason we lose recruits is because of our workout facilities. What can any school in Louisiana offer that Southern can't offer besides facilities. Nothing.

I will reserve my answer, but most of you can foreshadow. Even with Taj Mahal-like facilities on the Bluff, name recognition plays a role in attracting athletes. To the end of time SU will take a back seat to Grambling in this category. This is irrefutable. I read on Pantro's thread (regarding SU and UNT) that one fan stated he thought Southern was in west Texas. It will be interesting to watch the effect of SU's recruiting in Orleans and surrounding parishes with the emergence of SLU. I see the Lions as stiff competition for SU. Grambling and SU rarely recruit the same athletes (look at the signee list each year). Grambling's storied name facilitated securing key talent in Texas, Alabama, and Georgia over the years. Most of Grambling signees never even considered SU. However, Louisiana talent is fertile for all to survive. Grambling has facilities intact, so SU has to catch up. An upgrade will help the student athlete at SU, but truly Grambling and SU's recruiting philosophies have always been different. For this reason, I do not see an upgrade in facilities effecting either school. The upgrade may play a bigger picture in securing a recruit away from SLU, Nicholls, or McNeese, etc. It seems signees at Grambling and SU want to be Tigers or Jags (just like Vernon mentioned he always wanted to be a Jaguar coming out of Glen Oaks).

Don't think that certain schools this way aren't noticing that.

If those upgrades are started (physically) next year, please send those guys this way because there is a TON of red tape staring us in the face although the state legislature approved and the bankrolling of our purported 25K-27K stadium was done over 2 years ago. :|

At any rate, good luck w/ it Southern. Pete and his staff have TRULY been good to SU. Pete and SU's 90s squads will go down in SWAC lore w/ the rest of those "decade" related dominant teams. :tup:

So, what you are telling me is Marcus Spears (Southern Lab grad.) would have gone to SU if the facilities were "state of the art"?
