I believe the school is still NAIA.

Not to be confused with the Aggies of Cameron University, the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Aggies field men’s Division II teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, football and golf as well as women’s squads in basketball, cross country, golf, softball and volleyball. The school also has a coed rodeo team, although rodeo is not a sport recognized by the NCAA.

The official OPSU website states that it is a member of the NAIA and is a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference which is also the conference that Langston plays in.

Yeah I remember seeing OPSU play Langston when I was keeping up with their unbeaten streak. They are in the same conference I believe
People want to say who they should have played but people don't realize that those schools aren't available on the dates needed. It's so easy to say it but it's not what's available.
I'm giving you credit for actually taking the time to explain this to someone. Folks need to understand that it takes TWO to schedule a game.
Looks like they were D2 for a single season (2016) as part of the Lone Star Conference.

You guys ever think we will get to the point of SWAC teams only playing fellow FCS teams? Whats the point of playing an NAIA school or a FBS team?

Thats not an explanation. It's a simple statement. I get it but most others would still have questions after that. An explanation would be more detailed.
Scheduling is not easy and the NCAA does not help at all by letting teams schedule all willy-nilly.

If GSU played Langston it would have been nice to see my son's former team mate and Grambling native Zack Beard in Langston's backfield. Zack was recruited to Langston on a track scholarship and runs a 4.3. The football coach brought him up to Langston to see how his football play is and they offered him a dual scholarship. Good kid....

The answer is NO.
Now I will say that GSU should not be playing ANYBODY that is not a FCS or FBS program period. I wish our AD would get to the point of pushing to schedule only FCS programs that are in the Top 25 along with low tier FBS programs like ULM, Arkansas State, etc....
No, I don't think SWAC schools will ever get to that point. And personally, I don't think they should. While we are all members of the conference with common goals, the individual goals of each member institution will vary. What may be good for one SWAC school, doesn't necessarily mean that it will be good for the other. I personally have no problem with Grambling (and others) playing FBS mid-major schools. I look at it as a nice change of pace from the norm. And just like those FBS programs take the time to give us a chance to play up, I see no reason why we can't give D2 (and SOME NAIA) programs the chance to play up against us. The problem I have is when we start playing schools that belong to NCAA DIII and USCAA.
But Grambling (under Fobbs) has created a good "home" crowd. So, while pushing home/home series with FCS teams, it's not easy scheduling 5-6 home games per year. If grambling were to play the schedule you like, then you would go back to the 3-4 home games.....if that's what you want.

If we could get home/home series with Top 25 FCS programs we will be ok. Then add a state school in the mix with a home/home.
I just feel we are limiting ourselves.
Like I said earlier I can’t speak for other schools in the SWAC. What works for Velley does not work for us.

Valley is the exception to my statement but that is because they don't belong in the SWAC anyway. Their OOC opponents should ONLY be from the SIAC.

Why tho? If it's a consistent top 25 D2, I can see it OR occasionally (every 4-5 years) a low mid-major program. However, what people are doing now is excessive and frustrating. Moderation is key I guess. Also, I see this from both sides because I have no idea why Georgia Tech is wasting a week with Alcorn. One of our most memorable games last year was a Labor Day matchup (and OT loss) vs Tennessee. If the NCAA banned or limited inter-divisional play, I think the entire season would be so much better on ALL levels.
