2002 Report....

Information About the 2002 NCAA Division I Graduation-Rates Report

This information sheet and the enclosed 2002 NCAA Graduation-Rates Report have been prepared by the NCAA, based on data provided by the institution in compliance with NCAA Bylaw 30.1 and the Federal Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act. Each NCAA Division I college or university is required to distribute this sheet and the report to prospective student-athletes and parents, as specified in Bylaw 13.3.1.2.

The graduation-rates report provides information about two groups of students at the college or university identified at the top of the form: (1) all undergraduate students who were enrolled in a full-time program of studies for a degree, and (2) student-athletes who received athletics aid from the college or university for any period of time during their entering year. [Note: Athletics aid is a grant, scholarship, tuition waiver or other assistance from a college or university that is awarded on the basis of a student's athletics ability.]

The report gives graduation information about students and student-athletes entering in 1995. This is the most recent graduating class for which the required six years of information is available. The report provides information about student-athletes who received athletics aid in one or more of eight sports categories: football, men's basketball, baseball, men's track/cross country, men's other sports and mixed sports, women's basketball, women's track/cross country, and other women's sports. For each of those sports categories, it includes information in six self-reported racial or ethnic groups: American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black, Hispanic, Non-Resident Alien, White, and Other (not included in one of the other six groups or not available) and the total (all seven groups combined).

A graduation rate (percent) is based on a comparison of the number (N) of students who entered a college or university and the number of those who graduated within six years. For example, if 100 students entered and 60 graduated within six years, the graduation rate is 60 percent. It is important to note that graduation rates are affected by a number of factors: some students may work part-time and need more than six years to graduate, some may leave school for a year or two to work or travel, some may transfer to another college or university, or some may be dismissed for academic deficiencies.

I'm glad to see UAPB with a 65% rate. But please note that these percentages are straight foward. It does not take into account several factors. It is simply based on the # of students that enter as a freshman / the # that graduate. If a students dies, it brings the # down. If there is a coaching change, and several students transfer, it brings the # down. If a student gets drafted early, it brings the # down. So, for those schools with low rates, take into account the circumstances around the univerity 4 or 5 years ago.

University of Texas had a 19% graduation rate in football. 5 or 6 years ago, Mack Brown was named the head coach. 8 players transfered and 1 died in 2001. This affected the graduation rate alot for that freshman class. However, university of Oklahoma graduates 80% of its black atheletes with 100% in women basketball, compared to a 64% graduation rate amoung their white atheletes.

I'm not surprised that the numbers are higher for student-athletes than it is for regular students. The athletes are in a more structured environment and they tend to be monitored more closely than the regular students. This is not a knock on the regular students but just my opinion as to what attributes to the discrepancy.

Also, unfortunately, some of the regular students enroll for a semester or two, get Pell Grants and Loan money then drop out of school. I know that happens because several folk from my home area have done this. I try to convince them to go back to school and a lot of them will say: " I'm in default on my loans and can't get no more money" or they say : " They messed over me at Grambling... they said something about SAP. They just don't want to give me my money". I tell them that SAP mean Satisfactory Academic Progress and that they need to work to get a deferment or forebearance and finish getting their degree in general studies or something. So far...none of them have gone back. SAD!

Right on the money Mr Biggs!

Unfortunately, they don't understand that they're affecting and EFFECTING the entire graduation percentile by doing that.

The advice that I give ANY kid who even half-way fathoms attending school (especially our HBCUs) is: <b>Don't go unless you're intent on completing successfully. I'm not saying that you have to have a 4.0 all the way through. Just FINISH! Don't start unless you plan to finish and have enough intestitinal fortitude to do whatever it takes (legally) to complete</b>. Period.

That is soo true. I have a family member that I pulled a string or two to help him get money to attend college. He had a full ride and didn't do *ish with it. After one sememster he lost his choir scholarship and after one year he couldn't get anymore federal funding because his grades were soo low. I just hate that not only did he not take advantage of the opportunity to do something with his life, BUT he may have prevented someone from that same opportunity because the money was given to him.

History repeats itself. My 2nd cousin (god-sisters' son) did the exact same thing to me. Someone on campus did me a HUGE favor and this dumbazz just dropped out. A full 4 year ride and he quits. It wasn't grades that distracted him. It was a pedafilist-like white woman. What a dumb ass and what a waste. There was someone who could've used and APPRECIATED the help and actually completed.
