Ghetto Names

My professor told us of one of his students in a class who used to bring her twin boys into class all the time. (5:30 to 8:00 pm class) It started off when we were on the subject of what really constitutes black culture and its effect on American politics and we touched on the Mau-Mau uprisings in Kenya giveing some rise to "black" names. Well, for the mother of the twins she had claimed that she gave her kids black names so they could be proud of their heritage. Their names were Orangejello and Grapejello. Her favorite flavors of jello is how she came up with the names.

Oh, and it's pronounced "Oh-ranshz-ul-oh and Gruh-ped-juh-loh"

I think I mentioned once before about a couple who liked Earth Wind & Fire and named their son EarthWind Jones,or some such foolishness.

Now this is terrible. I hate to see people name kids after an artist, especially something stupid like that. I was named after a musician, but it's still a common name. But Tupac? C'mon now! I know that Ms. Shakur had a reason for naming her son Tupac, but that don't mean you can name your son the same thing just because you like Ambitions as a Ridah.

And what's so bad about is that I know that as I type, there is a young lady giving birth somewhere who's about to name her son Kanye. :smh:

They might spell it Kunye or Kunya. Remember after Roots firrst aired, a lot of mommas named their sons Kunta and girls were named Kizzy :lmao:

J4J,

Your daughters name is the ONLY name I ever considered to allow a child of mine to be named after me. Of course, I would spell it "Michaela" and pronounce Makayla.

Robber: I love the "Michaela" spelling, but I know folks and they will act illiterate and pronounce it Michael-ah. I didn't feel like correcting people so
I spelled it the way it sounds. But I love that one.

These are names of students I have taught:

Delasone (prounounced the last one)

Jodeci (yes after the group/he was born in 1992 when the group came out)

These are names of students in my school but not in my class:

Kirvacious :look:

Sh_tthead (pronounced Sha-Todd) :retard:

Kanye is not new, if you can look at Kanye West and figure his age. I have heard of some Kanyes before.

A girl in 5th grade with me was named Anye (pronounced like Kanye) and sister was named Tanya. Anye teaches school now.

I know some Marys and a few other common-named folk who aint doing da-da with themselves. So I guess that proves the theory of folks not getting a call back with their resumes because their name is ghetto is WRONG.

My Brother said it best when he said, "I'm not naming my kid anything that gonna get his/her resume thrown in the trash before he gets call in for an interview."

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks like that...

What is funny about all of this is that about 98% of the people out there with "ghetto" names will either swear up and down their name is not ghetto or spout some bull**** reason why their name is special.

I disagree.

I know for one that I'll trash a resume with a crazy name that is named after some cold formula.

Honestly, I hated my name growing up(Lance). I always thought that it sounded like some surfer-boy stuff. However, Lance Bilbrew is more likely to get called in for interviews than LaDainian Bilbrew or Onterrio Bilbrew. I'm still not too fond of my name, but I realize that it could have been worse.

My ex-wife's middle name was Rowchita(pronounced "Ro-Sheeta")and she swore up and down that it was not "ghetto", even though she grew up in a shotgun house in South Baton Rouge.

Sad, but true.

When you're hired, you represent that organization, company, establishment. And you parents thought enough of you to name you after some cold formula?

I'm from the old school. I truly believe your name is somewhat tied into your destiny. If it was not so, then the Hebrews would have not used such names as "Jedidiah - friend of God".

Speak Beans! :D

We are already a unique race because we are survivors! Having all these names that are harder to spell as well as pronounce is ridiculous. Then we say we don't want a slave name. Well, looks like we have have to change our last name also, if that is the case.

I don't know many Evans, Johnson's, Washington's, Anderson's, etc...that came from the Motherland. :goof:

I cant imagine looking at a resume that with a name like, "Hydrogen Peroxid`e Williams", "Alcohol Jones", "Calamine Brown". :smh:

No, it's not new, but it's just the fact that someone would name their child "Kanye" without knowing the meaning or significance of the name. Giving your seed an exotic name just because you saw it on TV and it sounded cute is GITTO!!

Names used to mean something back in the day. They used to tell us something about where you came from. My neighbor back home didnt know what to name her son, so she just named him "Mister" (pronounced Mr.) Washington. :look:

I didn't know that Tupac's real name was Tupac. I thought he or someone had chosen it from him. Tupac Amaru was a real life Indian visionary in I think Peru or Bolivia. He was a descendant of the Inca who rebelled against the Spanish for some time and was brutally murdered by the Spanish when he was eventually caught. He is revered in parts of South America.

Oh I forgot, there is another kid in my school whose name is Tupacus . If you know this kid like I know him, you know his momma didn't name him after Tupac Amaru. He was named after a real life Ghetto visionary in Baltimore and other parts of U.S.A. He was a descendant of a Black Panther who rebelled against the Government for some time. Tupac Shakur was brutally murdered by.., He is revered in many parts of Black America..,
