Ghetto Names

Black mothers, please stop giving your children these ghetto arse names.
I ran into this girl the other day and the told me her name was Nique.
I know you're saying that isn't that bad, but that was just her nickname. Here actual name was Camphophenique. :shame:

Hey don't be mad because she liked the sound of that. If Gwenith Paltrow can name her child Apple, the Nique's mom can name her Camphophenique. It is a matter of taste, and when black folks stop figuring that everyone out there has to think like thee, then you'll realize it is her preference and not yours. :)

I just want to see today's parents start naming their children names that have either family or historical significance. And start giving the proper training to their kids about the proper values in life.
IT'S ALL ABOUT KEEPING THE MAIN THING THE MAIN THING!!!

Personally, I think it's sad. I have remorseful feelings over my OWN middle name which is more kuntry than ghetto but, to each his own. When I hear one of those ultra ghetto names, I usually just stare at the person & after 10 good seconds ask them to repeat their name.....then I stare again & finally move on. :|

I know a couple of Sparkles. Growing up I met a lot of people with umm ghetto names. I never really thought of mine as ghetto until about jr high. I just thought it was different. Now I constantly have to correct people on the spelling or hear the question "does your name have a meaning?" Well if it does, I don't know what it is. I said that when I have kids I will either give them common names or names that mean something. Now I just had a little niece. My brother told me her name was Neveah (nuh-vay-uh). I said that girl made up that name, he swore she didn't. Then he said it was heaven spelled backwards and that she got the name off the internet. I looked the name up online and it was talking about a porno star. My little niece has been set up :(

Sorry J4J, but Camphophenique is ghetto as hell. As a matter of fact, that is the most ghetto of ghetto names I have heard in my life. We go out of our way to be different, and come up with crap like that. I'm just glad my wife ain't the type to come up with crazy ass names like that.

Fortitude,

What's your middle name??? Ain't nothing wrong with it being country. I used to hate my middle name. Now I love it.

Ghetto and too many letters. They only give you so many letters with spaces to bubble/fill in on standardized tests and other applications.

Hope she's a fast learner, so she won't be left behind when the other toddlers learn to spell and write their short names.

:shame:

I found that out after I named my child Christopher.

Camphophenique right up there with some of the most ghetto names on the market.

I once met a young lady who told me her her name was Krissy. I then asked what was it short for (thinking Kristine or Kristina or something like that). She said her name was Khryshandalyn. I told her her mother was wrong for that. She said she was 8 years old before she could spell her name. I just call her 13 letters now.

I have a big problem with the ?ghetto? names. When I was pregnant I told my friends & family that my daughter?s name would not begin with ?Shah, Lah, or Kah? and it would not end with ?ah?. So that eliminated a lot of the names they were coming up with. When I named her Taylor they told me ?that?s a white kid?s name? and ?ain?t no black kids named Taylor?. She?s 2, she can sound it out and spell it so no complaints here.

I know this child that named her little boy D?evian and it?s pronounced ?Dee? then ?Evian? (like the water) now that?s not as bad as Camphophenique (her mother is WRONG for that) but damn. :smh:

I know what you're saying Robber, but think about it...BEFORE now, the names that "we" feel are common were made up too at one time. Granted, I don't see that there will be too many more Camphopheniques walking around. And I do not like the name, but people are always going to be who they are and do what they want to do.

My grandmother thinks Makayla is made up. She just does not know that it his origins from the name "Michael" which means "with God". And I just didn't want to name my child Ella Mae, Barbara, or Mary Louise (all my aunts)....I like strong names that aren't so common and if making up the name would have cut it, I would have made up one.

My name is Kema...my mom thought she was being creative. I liked her creativity because it is unique and there were never any other Kemas in my class. Although, one of my childhood friends is a Kema too. Other wise, I was never in class like some kids and the teacher calls them up... "Michael J., Michael E., and Michael R" ....My name was unique and so was I.

I hate Camphophenique...but hey...She will change her name to Nique and all is well on the western front.

I don't know any Sparkles, but I knew a Star...and she is white and not ghetto at all.

Ya know...on just about any other subject dealing with the downing of black culture I would agree 100000%. But I really dislike some of the names that they are giving these children. That Campho name is really ridiculous.

I heard a story on the radio talking about how outrageous names are becoming...and this spanned whites as well. There was a top 10 list but I only remember the following names because they stuck out.

Espn - ok how in the world do you pronounce this

Insignificant - ok why in the L would you name your child this

and the killa of them all

Syphlis - you tell me *smh*

I think I mentioned once before about a couple who liked Earth Wind & Fire and named their son EarthWind Jones,or some such foolishness.
Nothing tells a child that she/he is special like a well thought out name.A name like Frederick Douglass Whatever or Sojourner Truth Whatever or Charles Hamilton Whatever. The Charles Hamilton is for Charles Hamilton Houston.Or Thurgood Marshall Whatever. These historical names must be followed by a constant explanation about the person that they were named for. Also,I like naming kids after upstanding members of my own family as well. This should be accompanied by constant explanations as well.
Also, you can mix the names up.If I had a daughter, I would name her some variation of my mother's name, Reatha. It wouldn't have to be Reatha. It could be Stephanie Aretha Whatever...

i have noticed a lot of white people giving their children, especially mixed, really ghetto names.

i have also noticed that a lot of "us" are starting to put our names and our baby's daddy's names combined to give the child a name. the names i have seen are terrible.

J4J,

Your daughters name is the ONLY name I ever considered to allow a child of mine to be named after me. Of course, I would spell it "Michaela" and pronounce Makayla.

My Brother said it best when he said, "I'm not naming my kid anything that gonna get his/her resume thrown in the trash before he gets call in for an interview."
