man how do you get ready for alumni band and performing back at your undergrad HC,, ESPECIALLY if yo arse has not been on your instrument in years?! :uhoh:

i got bought what, 8 months to get ready. :noidea:

You and me both. I have until November and I have not played my instrument since 96. :bawling:

I tried to play like 2-3 years ago, but it didn't work out too well. :smh:

uuh, you practice.

If only if it were that simple. I hate I went so long without playing.

I did a similiar thread a while back and folks offered some really great tips on practice techniques.........too bad I can't find the dayum thread. :smh:

So Dr. Oliver is going to allow an alumni band this year?

So Dr. Oliver is going to allow an alumni band this year?

That's what da word is. My fellow 90's babies decided to put me in charge of rounding everyone up........why they picked me of all people, I dunno. :xeye:

So gone ahead and PM me yo email addy so I can add u to the list.

uuh, you practice.

Not that easy now days living in an apartment and working 40-50 hours a week, not to mention the marching and playing aspect,,, uuuuugh. plus too, it took years to lose my range (trumpet),,, how do you get that back in a few months? the last time I played my trumpet, i sounded like I did the first time I picked up da King 200 loner in 6th grade!!! :smh:

My alma mater started theirs up this past HC and I plan to join in on the fun in October. :)

I plan to get in shape around July/August and as for marching tenor drum, I have to deal with changes in cadences and getting used to wearing that sling and that drum all over again. :dizzy:

i guess. i mean how else are u supposed to get ready other than practicing? if you wanna participate, then you know what you need to do, and you'll do it. if you don't, then you make excuses and usually don't. but that's just my opinion.

It shouldn't be too hard for you to prepare. But for us brass players, we just can't up and start blowing fanfares like back in da day. We have to ease our way back in- fucc around and bust yo lip. :smh:

So I feel ya Bart........shat, play some long tones and and few scales or sumthing.

I performed in the alumni band this past HC. It was cool especially since I lost 40 lbs before doing it. I hadn't put a drum on in almost 8 years.

yeah no doubt Xhale, no doubt, you gotta practice. In my case i'll prolly have to play the 3rd trumpet parts because getting the range and endurance back to the point were it was back in the day at this point in life with the work schedule will be a TALL ORDER. :smh: Took years to lose it, don't know if I can get it all back in a few months. Plus too, I tried jumping rope a couple of summers ago and I thought my freaking chest was going to spontaneously comburst, so I know trying to point-&-drive and hit dem 90s CONSTANTLY for the whole show (like when I was a crab,, i was from strict disciplined corps-style high school and when they say point-&-drive and hit 90s, I took it literally and was doing it from start to finish,, just like in high school! what a dope I was,, a certain portion of the band was so wasted it was a miracle they didn't fall out on the field in that dayum 99 degree august heat wit dem hot "Fred Flintstones" we used to have (dem big "drum major" looking furry cloth band hats :smh: ) and the wool unies,,, and i'm up there trying to march perfect and be totally still like in high school band,,, )

THANK YOU. Back in da day, "hamberger lips" was no biggie, you strategically plan dat shat, just don't chew any gum and/or eat the day of a performance (that was my ritual,,, chewing gum or eating large greasy meals would fugg up my range and endurance. :upset: I had it down to a SCIENCE from high school.), but now,,, GOOD LARD, I CAN'T EVEN HOLD A "CONCERT C" wit out losing it after about 3-5 seconds (just like when I first picked up a horn) FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!! :dead: it's tight.

i mean, I'd have to say, looking back, I was at my peak as a musician/range/skills/site reading as a CRAB in college, after 6 years of being in high school band practicing virtually every day, being in marching, concert and stage band, participating in Solo & Ensemble(as it was called in Alabama) and trying out for all-state band every year from 7th grade through 12th and only making "blue" and "white" band my last two years in high school). he11 we used to play so much we'd clown each other for having a "beak" lip,, but that was when we could pick up the horn and play for hours, loud over a wide range. NOT happening now. :smh:

i know what you mean, just do a lil bit at a time. betta get you a 7C, start buzzin, hit dem chromatic slur drills and pull out that Arban book! :lmao:

i remember my last marching season in high school i threw my trumpet in the back of the closet. i had no intentions of lookin at another 3C or schilke, valve oil, none of it. well my first school(TnSt) persuaded me to play my trumpet so I KNOW what you talkin bout. i had to get myself together in 2 weeks from not playin a note in 8 months. needless to say, i wasn't ready like i would've been if i had known i was gonna be on my trumpet. so i went from section leader/1st trumpet to 3rd trumpet extraaa crab. now my tone was good, but my embouchure was nowhere to hit them super notes like i had been. now after camp, i quit because of lack scholarship funds so the trumpet went back in the closet again. luckily when i re auditioned for A&M(Dr. Carney) advised i stay on clarinet since i was majoring in music(at that time), so my embouchure wouldn't be screwed up from switching back and forth, so i didn't have to go through all that again.

now on my clarinet, oh i can pick that thang up after 10 years and sound like like i'm in somebodies symphony. :lmao: it's like riding a bike to me, been playin it for so long.
