STATESBORO — Georgia Southern starting quarterback Shai Werts and defensive end Quan Griffin were arrested this week in separate incidents and are suspended from all football activities, Georgia Southern said in a statement on Friday, Aug. 2.
According to the statement read before the first practice of fall camp by head coach Chad Lunsford, Werts was arrested during a traffic stop on Wednesday evening in Saluda, S.C. He was charged with speeding and misdemeanor possession of cocaine. Griffin was arrested on Thursday in Bradford County, Fla., in connection with a domestic incident.
The incident report from the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office was obtained by the Savannah Morning News on Friday through the South Carolina open records law. According to the report, Werts’ 2016 silver Dodge Charger was originally seen speeding “on Chappells Highway near John J. Rushton Rd. in the county of Saluda.”
After “driving several miles” while police were pursuing the car with sirens and flashing lights on, Werts pulled over his automobile.
