Fundamentals...

Brave

Da Better U get, Da Better we get & That's IT
is the reason we lost this game.

poor assignments on defense...(giving up around 20 lay ups)
missed a layup to tie the game
missed TOO many free-throws
and not going to your star player in the clutch

All the other teams in the tournament do the exact opposite.
this is why the Swac always loses in the 1st round.

Dahill stated on one post "I don't care....Jason should have kept firing it up" he was off...get others involved. This is the SWAC players' mentality.

IF a shooter is off.... the only way he can back on is to keep shooting the damn ball. You never tell a shooter to stop shooting the ball, especially if he is a streak shooter. I have been watchin Jason's game longer than anybody on this board. I know what he can do. I know once he makes one, he is almost impossible to stop. I knew Jason when he was still shootin the ball GRANNY STYLE in my backyard.

You know what, I am proud of Alcorn. Even though they lost, they showed me that they are really a good team. At least yall didn't have an Alvin Pettway on your team traveling 5 times.(sorry for dogging my own team, but hell, I hate Pettway because of Saturday.:smh: ) That should have been Bama State there. They wouldn't have done that ish on Tyrone.

Free throws and a costly not blocking on BJ at the end.

Damn it Braves but I still have my tickets to see Hampton upset Uconn

Oh yea add that blocking out on that list also. In the first half 22-11 rebounds Siena's way & a costly one at the end.

I'm proud of them but we shoulda beat Siena...they are garbage point players with a hot shooting African. That's how we lost.

Why Alcorn lost:

You didnt play "no" defense...period. The African got off, but it was the other dudes that did yall in with the easy lay ups.

Free throws down the stretch....Fleming missed the front end of that one and one and he didnt complete that 3 point play.....killer

A couple of very bad calls....especially on that steal in the first half and the travel call when the kid was bouncing the ball but the ref from the back didnt see it and called traveling. Alcorn also didnt get the foul calls they should have.....but overall the game was well officiated (by SWAC standards).

I was impressed with Fleming...I was soooo happy to hear the announcer mention that he had graduated and would be given his final year of eligibility. I hope the young people and their parents that were listening picked up on this.

I was sorta disappointed that Whitney didn't put Fleming on the Block more. The two man game with he and Harris (?) who was knocking down treys would have caused Siena some problems.
Siena had no answer for Fleming! On the defensive end, I would have gone more to a full court zone trap or token pressure on the ball coming up court to take time off the clock. Once the ball reached half court, I would have gone to an agressive matchup zone. Sienna didn't show me any people that could create a shot
(other than Kunta and Reynolds).

Damn Little African

I'm going to heckle his arse Friday like he never been heckled before.

The "White Dudes" got inside all night on layups which also kept Sheba in the game.

Hey Mike, Fleming is gone but Lee Cook will still be around. He needs to go to Pete Newel's Big Man Camp this summer and get some experience.

I agree! Fleming could have won that game for you. Siena's inside people are real weak. Also, where was Lee Cook? He was a killa in Bham.

btw, a sad stat for the SWAC was that Fleming only shoots 63% from the FT line but that ranks 7th in the SWAC. :smh:

that last posession (when the ball went to Sienna) should have been Alkorns. The ball was was clearly out on the Sienna player.

Siena was not that great but I think that it is totally logical to assume that if that Karunga (or whatever) had been playing all year, they would have been a better team. What kind of coach would have a player like that on the bench until the tournament? They were better than their record but not better than Alcorn. With better defense, Alcorn could have won by at least ten.

I'm not a coach...

But I play one on the internet. The two greatest weakness in the SWAC is the fundamentals of our players and depth. I'm not basing these comments on Alcorn, because for the most part Whitney does a better job than most.

The lack of depth is obvious in our inside people. We just don't seem to have the big stud physical specimen to compete in the paint for rebounds. The solution is simple===> Talk to the football coach and get you a couple of 6'5" tight ends to serve as the bangers/board crashers on your team. If nothing else, the physical attributes of these guys would make for some interesting practices. On a roster consisting of 12 players you are not going to tell me that I can't find 4 baddazz rimbenders to play center and power forward. Hell they don't have to be gazelles and run the floor, but just rebounders and spaceeaters who will lay some lumber on those who venture into the paint.

Fundamentals of blocking out, passing, dribbling, and shot selection needs to be worked on. I've noticed a tendency of the guards in the SWAC to dribble too much. Even when the other team is in a zone defense, you got some dude out on the perimeter practicing his AI crossover. Against a zone defense, once the ball passes half court, it should never touch the floor except on a bounce pass. On free throws, first of all make the dayum shot. When that fails crash the board (everyone except the shooter and the guy designated to be back on defense) and fight for the possession.

It seems that our coaches do a poor job of getting the guys to buy into the team concept. Too much one on one play. Let these players know that their chances of getting into the NBA is miniscule. They have to realize that they are playing for the name on the front of the jersey and not the name on the back.
A team of players that know their roles and play them well will beat "individual"play everytime.

Finally, we need to get better assistant coaches. Too often, our head coach will only hire recent former players with little or no coaching experience to sit on the bench and have little or no input. Give me a guy who has worked in the trenches on the high school level, is solid in his X and O's, and can help teach fundamentals. Don't worry about him taking your job, if he can coach, your team will win and he will get his own head job somewhere else. Then you hire the another high school coach who knows X and O's and can recruit and teach fundamentals.

Dayum...if it takes a rocket scientist to know this then what the hell am I?

And one more thing...

The refs missed a call on that last layup that #4 missed. He was foul on the drive down below going to the goal. You cant miss that call. Prosper was getting phantom fouls called, but Alcorn didnt get the obvious foul at the end of the game....that hurt.

My Two Cents

We Came, We Saw, We Got Our Arse Kicked By Not Taking Care Of The Basics.

You can't win outside the SWAC making simple mistakes and not taking advantage of what you are given.

Down the stretch, Fleming was tired. Layups, put backs, he had, Free Throws; he missed a crtical 1 + 1 and Harper missed one also. Taking the passing lanes away by simply putting your hands up helps a lot when defending players cutting to the basket.

Mike, I may have a position for you at this Juvenile Dention Center I mentor at. They need a good Holiday Inn Express Coach like yourself. (Roof)

63% and is 7th in the SWAC? WTF? You've GOT to be kidding mighty hornet!!! WTF is going on man?????!!!!!

I'm holding a SWAC basketball camp. Damn, a FREE THROW and we can't HIT or BOX out or PLAY SOLID defense. I looked @ how ASU doubled up on a player OFTEN (too often  ) when it wasn't even required. It was like the guys got mixed up on defense. Man.... Just speechless... You should be able to hit greater than 50% of your free throws blind folded (once you have a feel for the distance and arc required).
