I agree...however, I thought the arrangement of Make Me Smile was about as weird as I have ever heard. As a Chicago fan of some 40 years, I respectfully ask that the arrangment be re-worked. Don't get me wrong: The Jukes played the cotton-pickin' stew out of it. It just needs to be reworked. I think it may be inverted chords that are killing it. I would need to see the score to really be able to identify it properly.

Both bands sound great!!! AAMU (can't believe i'm saying this) is on some good shyt! Love that Kelly Price.
SU, what can I say. Great shyt hands down. Clearly the best 5th of the season so far.
Although that Smile song was greatly executed by SU, I agree with dacontinent. The beginning seemed all over the place "arrangement" wise. The band clearly played what was given to them but the song "to me" sounded like a march then turned into a lil grove. :noidea:

It was arranged in 88 by Roy Johnson before this season.. and the intro's sound about identical...
Quick question.. Did you actually HEAR the original?
That arrangememnt sound just like that.. the ARTICULATION in the original is the same.. It actually "switch" grooves in the original.. So you basically complaining about them playing the song that way the original is... you complaining about 88 band as well.. Youtube them.. same groove change..

Dac.. I guess your rework request did not get much traction, but I must agree with your assessment. However most would not come to our conclusion given that this song is an old 70's tune and the original arrangement is not known to most. I applaud the Jukebox for going there, I only hope they would stay will Chicago and pin the notes to "Saturday in the Park" that one is probably the best of Chicago's work.
We played "Make Me Smile" in high school and I must say I liked our high school arraignment better than the original song. ....Just like I prefer the Jukebox arrangement of "Lets Stay Together" and "Sexual Healing" to that of the original by Al Green & Marvin Gay....this is just my opinion which is not up for debate... it is what it is!

AAMU sounded great. Thought I heard a Frank Ocean song on that second cut and their last cut was great. I'm sorry but this one here goes to AAMU..

I have the original album in vinyl and still play it about 3 times a year. I agree that SU did a FANTASTIC job with the articulation ... but I do tell you that the voicings are inverted from 2:27 - 2:49 in the AAMU/SU clip.

Here is the '88 Jukes. The section is from 0:38 - 0:52. Just listen to the difference.
I think the rest of the SU arrangement is FANTASTIC and they played it better than I have ever hear ANY other marching band play that tune. Yes, I did say ANY OTHER including the '88 Jukes. I applaud the Jukes for going after it. It is one of my favorite tunes for marching band.

But it's good to have a comparative study on the original and a good interpretive arrangement.. Let's continue to be constructive and not recede into the smack (that always ends up).. It's good to discuss and further disect the music...

As for reworking JSU arrangements, I have done so for several of them - starting with Get Ready. While I enjoy a number of things that occurred during the Dowell Taylor area, one thing that is left over that I despise is the change in arrangement of Get Ready. Someone decided to simplify it and made it way too mechanical. I shudder every tiime I hear it. In my love for the Jukes I have also done arrangements of Can You Feel It and a few others. FINALE and I are good friends.

Now you may feel it a different way... don't make the other arrangement incorrect.. bottom line is they blew the paint off that joker.. is all that matters.
As far as 97 dude...lmao Dude don't nobody care what you think when it come to sports.. so you know how we feel when it come to band...carry on..

I hear the part that you're pointing out, but I would disagree about it sounding weird or needing to be reworked. I liked the way it sounded. I like when they arrange a song for the current instrumentation of the band rather than pull out the original arrangement. The original arrangement doesn't always fit the sound that you want to achieve.

Exactly.. a good arranger knows how to arrange for his/her band.. not just pull out an album and write something they think is an "One size fit all" arrangement..

Like the Juke didn't? C'mon. I had my own AAMU partners texting me how the Juke came with it on them. Nobody dissed AAMU band. Usually they sound pretty good unless they don't have numbers for some reason. But the Juke right now is on some other stuff. It's making old head Jukes take notice.

I understand you well. ve fun with Since I am not that well acquainted with the inner-workings of the Jukes program, I don't know what changed between the '98 version and the '11 version. I do know that I like the '98 version for the section in question and for everything else I like the '11 version. All I can say is have fun with it and make great music.
