Over the years, the poison has been loaded into all varieties of medicine ? cough syrup, fever medication, injectable drugs ? a result of counterfeiters who profit by substituting the sweet-tasting solvent for a safe, more expensive syrup, usually glycerin, commonly used in drugs, food, toothpaste and other products.

Toxic syrup has figured in at least eight mass poisonings around the world in the past two decades. Researchers estimate that thousands have died. In many cases, the precise origin of the poison has never been determined. But records and interviews show that in three of the last four cases it was made in China, a major source of counterfeit drugs.
 
In fact, The Times found records showing that the same Chinese company implicated in the Haiti poisoning also shipped about 50 tons of counterfeit glycerin to the United States in 1995. Some of it was later resold to another American customer, Avatar Corporation, before the deception was discovered..

That's some scary schitt!
 



Unfortunately the US goverment is not telling americans the details of this story, because they dont want to upset china. A huge holder of american debt.

U got that right.... It looks like we are spending too much time worrying about terrorists and not enough time monitoring our food supply.

WASHINGTON - Farmed fish were fed meal spiked with an industrial chemical linked to the ongoing recall of pet foods, though the contamination level was probably too low to pose a danger to anyone who may have eaten the fish, federal health officials said Tuesday.

The Canadian-made meal included what was purported to be wheat gluten, a protein source, imported from China. The material was actually wheat flour spiked by the chemical melamine and related, nitrogen-rich compounds to make it appear more protein rich than it was, officials said.

I posted something about this article in another section. This melamine thing is scary as hayle! Why can't this country get a better handle on our food supply? :shame:
 
There was an excellent article in the nytimes last week about this. The american food companies are trying to keep this quiet. They WONT test the food products coming from China and are trying to get the chinese to test the food. I guess its going to take lawsuits from americans getting sick or dying before Kraft and the gang take steps to test the food products coming in from China.

I think the US is afraid that the chinese will stop buying our debt, I doubt if we will see any change in policy anytime soon.

United States investigators were not allowed to interview the managers of the Chinese pet feed companies accused of violations, even though they were being held in detention centers.

After United States investigators left, China issued a statement asking the United States not to punish other exporters of food ingredients for the misdeeds of a few rogue companies, and not to let this become a trade quarrel.

Experts say China would like to close the door on the episode. And so would America?s biggest food companies like Kraft, which is supporting an organization that is pushing to strengthen the F.D.A.

In a statement issued this week, Kraft Foods said, ?We?re also lending our support to the Coalition for a Stronger F.D.A. and industry colleagues in urging Congress for substantial funding increases to the F.D.A. for the agency?s food oversight functions.?

FDA says avoid toothpaste made in China

WASHINGTON - The government warned consumers on Friday to avoid using toothpaste made in China because it may contain a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze. Out of caution, the
Food and Drug Administration said, people should throw away toothpaste with labeling that says it was made in China. The FDA is concerned that these products may contain diethylene glycol.

The agency is not aware of any poisoning from toothpaste in the United States, but it did find the antifreeze ingredient in a shipment at the U.S. border and at two retail stores: a Dollar Plus store in Miami and a Todo A Peso store in Puerto Rico.

The alert says the agency found DEG in three products manufactured by Goldcredit International Trading in China. The products are Cooldent Fluoride, Cooldent Spearmint and Cooldent ICE. Analysis of the products revealed they contained between 3 percent and 4 percent DEG.

The agency also found the chemical in one product manufactured by Suzhou City Jinmao Daily Chemical Co. in China. Analysis of that product, Shir Fresh Mint Fluoride Paste, found it contained about 1 percent DEG.

WASHINGTON/CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. transportation officials on Tuesday formally insisted a New Jersey importer recall up to 450,000 Chinese-made light truck tires, dismissing the company's claim it cannot financially withstand that step.

Nicole Nason, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration administrator, also said in an interview the agency is trying to locate tires made by Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. for tests and will ask the manufacturer for information.

"We need to start doing some digging," Nason said of the controversy involving the replacement products.

Although Hangzhou Zhongce disputed the assertion its products were defective, the case broadened an ongoing controversy over Chinese imports in the United States. Recent cases include the widely publicized problem with pet food ingredients as well as recalls of toy trains and toothpaste.

"China has been asleep at the switch when it comes to safety inspections," Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, said.

(CBS/AP) Farmed seafood joined tires, toothpaste and toy trains on the list of tainted and defective products from China that could be hazardous to a person's health.

Federal health officials said Thursday that they were detaining three types of Chinese fish ? catfish, basa and dace ? as well as shrimp and eel after repeated testing has turned up contamination with drugs unapproved in the United States for use in farmed seafood.

The officials said there was no immediate health risk and stopped short of ordering an outright ban.
 
I bought some tilapia from Wal-Mart this weekend. I didn't look to see where it was from until I got home. I politely took it right back and told them why.

I though Wal-Mart only used USA products...:retard:

They used to only use USA stuff. They put all the mom and pop stores out of business and then the demons came out in them. They now use more over seas stuff then anyone else.

Until more people start demanding poison free food, the government, stores and the food producers (Kraft, Kellogs, Quaker, etc.) in the USA will continue to allow this crap being sold to ameircan consumers.

The big ruling thats being pushed by the food industry through the FDA is a plan to allow the irradiation of meat and other products. They are working on passing a rule that allows the food industry to irradiate foods and not put a label saying that the food is being irradiated. Also meat that use to be considered bad, stuff they have to throw out, they will allow them to irradiate it and sell it to consumers. :upset:

The reason for Food irradiation is that the process of exposing food to radiation from radioactive materials is supposed to destroy microorganisms, bacteria and viruses. Studies have shown that this is mostly true, but they don't have any standards and some irradiation tests still leave bacteria on the food.

Buy whole foods and trader joe's stock. The educated consumers will start shopping at these places. The masses wont know any better and will consume the crap. By the way, Europeans have banned irradiated meat, because the irradiation creates a cancerigen in the fat of the meat.

A lawsuit prompted by a fatal accident on the Blue Route contends that the tires were simply not made correctly.

A lawyer whose Philadelphia clients allege in a lawsuit that faulty Chinese-made tires caused a fatal car crash last year says millions of suspect tires may have been sold in the United States, far more than initial estimates.

The crash was one of at least two that led to a recall of the tires, and the latest in a string of alerts about the safety of products manufactured in China.

Jeffrey Killino filed suit on behalf of several Philadelphia families in May in Common Pleas Court against Foreign Tire Sales, a North Jersey tire distributor, alleging that its Chinese-made tires caused a crash in August that claimed the lives of two Philadelphia construction workers and severely injured another.

The federal government has demanded the recall of 450,000 tires made by the Chinese firm Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. that FTS distributed in the United States.

But Killino, 33, said that his firm, Woloshin & Killino of Philadelphia, has learned that there are a half-dozen or more other distributors of Zhongce tires and that as many as five million may have been sold in the United States since 2002.

Excuse my ignorance on the underlying issue here but....

Is all this shat some plot by the Chinese or is this really individual abuse of lack of supervision by Chinese officials?

What changed that allowed the products to start showing up on our shelves...or have they always been here?

China finds problems with kids' snacks

BEIJING - Chinese inspectors found excessive amounts of additives and preservatives in dozens of children's snacks and seized hundreds of bottles of fake human blood protein from hospitals, officials said Tuesday.


China's dismal health and safety record ? both within and outside its borders ? has increasingly come under the spotlight as its goods make their way to global markets. Major buyers like the United States, Japan, and the European Union have pushed Beijing to improve inspections.

China accused the media of hyping the problems.

"I think it would be better if the media would stop playing up this issue," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters.

China is learning that to be a player on the world market, the manufacturing processes they used in the past to produce cheep items is no longer going to work.

In the last ten year's, China has exported more of their home grown/made goods to market's they never had before which leads to more testing by receiving countries and themselves.
Before, it was them producing other countries goods using those countries spec's to get it right.
They cut corner's when producing their "native" products.

I'll bet a lot of the "ingrediant's" they use to produce stuff is banned from use in other countries.
Bet they still use pesticides that have been banned here for decades.

China is still about 2 decades away from being that GLOBAL ECONOMIC MONSTER evey country is gearing up to compete against.:nod:

U.S. recalls Chinese-made products for children

BEIJING (AP) ? U.S. regulators have ordered a recall of three more Chinese-made products for children on safety grounds, adding to a flurry of warnings about goods from China.

The latest recalls, announced Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, cover jewelry that the agency said could cause lead poisoning and a magnetic building set and plastic castles with small parts that it said could choke children.

The orders add to an avalanche of U.S. government actions in recent weeks to recall or restrict imports of Chinese tires, toothpaste, seafood, toys and other goods.
