Food For Thought Concerning SWAC Tourny

Nonchalant

Hail, Hail To Thee...
From the MEAC Page:

You want to talk about money look at the brochure: CIAA Tourney there is a breakdown on the revenue generated by the tournament. $11.5M worth of economic impact and $1.82M in ticket sales. Heck ESPN is just jumping on the bandwagon baby. Money likes money and 57M households and 6.6 million internet hits means there's something to be sold. The folks at ABC aren't doing any favors here. It's all about the return. Do you see them tuning into the friggin SIAC Tournament with all 150 fans?

The CIAA Tournament hosts a lot of events during their week-long Homecoming of sorts that generates big bucks for its member institions and the host city. Though the entire event resembles the NBA All-Star event it seems to work. Check out a list of events that our SWAC SHOULD model.

Good post. I've been wondering why the SWAC doesn't offer activities like this for the Tournament. :smh:

This is the thing folks. 3/4 of the CIAA is located in North Carolina;
*Fayetteville State University
*Johnson C. Smith University
*Livingstone College
*North Carolina Central University
*Saint Augustine's College
*Winston-Salem State University
*Elizabeth City State University
*Shaw University

Bowie State University
Saint Paul's College
Virginia State University
Virginia Union University

* - Are located in NC.

That's like having 10 AAMU/ASU, SU/JSU, GSU/SU, TxSU/PVAMU, Alcorn/Valley/JSU games held in the coarse of 3 days. With this key eliment the CIAA tournament shouldn't have problems filling up the stands.

Most of these events are done by outside promoters the CIAA does a great of promoting their tournament and NC is a big B-ball area to them this there Classic.

I was just about to post this. I looked on the SWAC site and the list of events is pitiful. Yes, B'ham isn't Durham, but that doesn't mean you can't come up with entertaining auxiliary events to entice fans. A better job must be done to plan events that everybody would want to participate in, grownup and kids.

Durham is much smaller than Birmingham... now Raleigh and Durham together (they are basically two mid sized cities located RIGHT beside each other... may be larger than Birmingham metro.

Not much to really do in either city. Durham is mostly hood other than the Duke campus. Raleigh is a lot like Birmingham. Nice city but not much night life. Its a good place to raise kids though and their are a lot of good jobs in the whole triangle area.

The reason the CIAA Tourney is so successful; it?s because basketball is king in that part of the country, down south football is king.

That's true...majority of the conference is located in North Carolina but a lot of the fans and spectators of the event are from former CIAA schools such as Norfolk State, NCA&T, Morgan, SC State, Hampton etc and majority of the fans come from Atlanta, Florida, Philly and all around the East Coast.

Kinda sorta. I think the real reason why the event is so successful is because of the number of activities that go on throughout the entire week. A host of celebs including P. Diddy, T. I., Evander Holifield, Majic Johnson and others come annually...I doubt they come just to see some D2 basketball teams. I'd like to see the SWAC adopt some different strategies in promoting conference events in the future. Hell, football may be "king" in the SWAC but look at the attendance/interest levels of the SCG since 2000.

The Chicken or The Egg Scenario.

But did not the CIAA have to be somewhat successful for the growth of the events to exist along with popular programs such as the Tom Joyner Show for celebs and retired athletes to celebrate the event, as well.

Great point. I'm sure the likes of P'Diddy, Magic, Tom Joyner... have not always been in attendance. The same can be said for all of the major football classics.
