Flint, MI water crisis


According to the folks I know from Flint the city has known about this for years and hasn't done anything to fix it.
 



That's insane if they knew and didn't do anything about it. I guess they expected the water system to fix itself. But it sounds like the State Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for allowing Flint, MI water supply, which is the Flint River to become corrosive and the corrosive water is corroding the lead pipe that serves over half of the residents in Flint, MI. This is why most places are replacing their water service lines with plastic polyethylene (PE) pipes.

This is what happens when Republicans get in office and deregulate environmental laws so that their business partners can get away with stuff in order to make a profit. There's a reason why environmental monitoring is required. And Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is a Republican.
 
The exact same thing happen in the Town of Joseph, LA and Jindal sent this young lady a letter saying that $6 million dollars are in place to fix the problem. What people have to understand, it's people like Jindal that created the problem in the first place, by deregulating the state's environmental laws. Now the state has to spend over $6 million dollars to fix something that never should have needed fixing in the first place if the proper monitoring procedures were in place. If the people in St. Joseph, LA knew any better, they would sue Jindal and the State of Louisiana for violating FEDERAL environmental laws.

My understanding is that the state is in control of Flint.

The state spent most of the time demonizing all those who told them about the lead problem. It was not until the new mayor declared a state of emergency that the state acknowledged that there is a problem.

A thorough investigation is needed.from the Governor on down. Republicans governors are known to disregard environmental laws in order to help out some industry to make a profit. Waters in the river could have easily gotten polluted (high corrosive levels) by some upstream source, such as runoff from farm lands and industry discharge. The same thing happened in St. Joseph, LA and some woman from there wrote a letter to then Governor Piyush 'Bobby' Jindal. He replied by saying that the State allocated $6 million dollars to fix the problem. IMO, the Town of St. Joseph, LA should sue the State of Louisiana and then Governor Piyush 'Bobby' Jindal for violating federal environmental laws. I'm sure in the case of the Town of St. Joseph, LA, it was some type of source contamination that contaminated the town's potable water and Louisiana DEQ allowed it to happen.

rachel maddow has been covering this story for quite a while now. if i remember their reporting, after the state took over flint they soon decided to switch the water source. the pipes were old and it was standard procedure to include a particular chemical treatment of the water so that the pipes would not corrode. it was expensive so the state, knowing what the outcome would be if they chose not to do it, decided not to do it anyway. So now kids have been exposed to lead, have been poisoned, and the city has no drinkable water. The state for their additional part, has done nothing to make sure the people of flint have any other sources of water to drink, cook, or bath with.
 
This is what happens when States are allowed to govern themselves without any federal oversight, basically the philosophy of today's Republican Party, which is no different than the now defunct States Rights Party or the Dixiecrats. This folks are trying their best to take the country back to the pre-Civil War Era or the days during slavery, where they can treat certain groups of people anyway they like in the name of profit and prosperity for them. This country has yet to properly reconstruct after the Civil War.

A young lady posted these pictures of the Town of St. Joseph, LA water. This has been going on for a few years now. I'm sure Piyush 'Bobby' Jindal deregulation of Louisiana environmental laws have a lot to do with this. Like Flint, MI, a thorough investigation needs to be done to determine how the state government during Jindal's eight years as governor allowed this to happen. States with these crazy Republican governors have allowed the health and safety of its citizen to take a backseat to their political agendas.

Erin Brockovich faced something like this and I think it goes deeper than just the piping system.

Concerning St. Joseph their water has been screwed up for years. In 2015 I can remember at least once a month the news reported that St. Joseph water was not drinkable and on a burn ban.

It's called 'REPUBLICANS REGULATION AGENDA'. All waters need some type of treatment, some more than others. But when the Republicans decide to deregulate in the name of profit, there's a problem. I bet most people don't know that the City of New Orleans gets its water from the Mississippi River, which is probably the most polluted rivers in the country, especially when it reaches New Orleans, but New Orleans has one of the most advanced water treatment. New Orleans actually uses activated carbon filters, which is one of the most expensive filtration systems. Activated carbon filters are the same filtration process that people use on their home faucets on a much smaller scale. New Orleans fear is not the pH or pollutes in the Mississippi River, it's the intrusion of salt water from the gulf during droughts, which causes the flow of the river to be extremely low. But when the State of Michigan switched the City of Flint's water source from Detroit to the Flint River, they intentionally tainted the sampling data so that the water appeared safe to drink. I'm sure they knew which homes used plastic (polyethylene (PE) or Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) or copper pipes versus homes that used iron pipes. In the case of older homes with copper pipes, some pipes were welded together with a lead base solder. I'm sure the State would be responsible for replacing all the pipes in those homes with non-plastic pipes. The Republican Party’s cost saving agendas cost more monies and create more heartaches in the long run.
 
As for the Town of St. Joseph, LA, I'm only posting what some young lady has shared on her Facebook page. She also shared a letter sent by Piyush 'Bobby' Jindal stating that $6 million dollars were allocated to fix the town's problem. If I can find where she posted that letter, I'll share it here. IMO, the Town of St. Joseph needs to get others involved outside of the State of Louisiana. They also need a thorough investigation on what went wrong with their water system.
 
Here's the letter from Jindal. I do believe Jindal seriously cut the budget for Louisiana Department of Health and Hospital (DHH).

Governor Rick Snyder is beginning to become more and more like Piyush 'Bobby' Jindal when it comes to the health and welfare of the citizens in the state he governs. These States Rights Republican governors need to be placed in prison for defying federal laws.

My wife's school is holding a water donation drive for Flint. We know it's not enough, but somebody has to do something!
