Financial 'jackpot' unlikely for cash-strapped Saint Peter's Peacocks despite generating NCAA tournament revenue

I think their coach makes more than every coach in the swac. 266k. is there anyone making more than that? I saw that before bama state hired Mo, they offered an assistant coach from Iowa State. He turned it down b/c they wanted to pay him less than half his assistant salary of 265k. so about 130k. how are our programs trying to put together historic runs like this program but completely unwilling to pay good coaches to do exactly this?

It's relatively the same as a swac coach being that he's in New Jersey

Because even with the SWAC having HOF players in basketball as well as actual national championships (NAIA when it was as good if not better than the NCAA tourney), the SWAC is still a football conference and everyone else will have to ride their coat tails UNLESS we have a team make a Sweet 16 run

yeah. I put it into the cost of living comparison calculator this morning. 266k in jersey city is the same as 130 in montgomery. keep in mind that was/is the worst coaching job in their conference. so... if our schools are paying 130k.... worst job salary.

You mean the "bloodbath" games?
Yes.

These school play not some but the TOUGHEST OC games than any other team in D1.

I remember Coppin State had the toughest OOC schedule multiple years. Folks forget that when it's conference playing time and want to bash the conference for having so many teams with losing records or the fewest wins.

Example here is who the Maine Black Bears played OOC with 5 HOME games

at Virginia TechL 47–82 0–1
UMaine Farmington (D3)W 71–52 1–1
at ColoradoL 46–90 1–2
UMaine Fort Kent (D3)W 75–43 2–2
Central ConnecticutL 56–64 2–3
at BradleyL 39–71 2–4
at ColumbiaL 66–77 2–5
at QuinnipiacL 47–73 2–6
University of New England (D3)W 86–50 3–6
Merrimack (D3)L 47–49 3–7
at RutgersL 64–80 3–8

Jackson State No home games

at No. 11 IllinoisL 47–71 0–1
at Louisiana TechL 68–70 0–2
at California BaptistL 64–77 0–3
at MarshallL 66–80 0–4
at IndianaL 35–70 0–5
at LouisianaW 75–70 1–5
at MarquetteL 54–83 1–6
at Illinois StateW 61–55 2–6
at No. 17 Iowa StateL 37–47 2–7
at Northern IowaL 56–66 2–8
at DrakeL 65–70 OT2–9

7 teams played in the post season. The Swac as a whole played 72 teams that went to the postseason. 3-69 (Tx Southern beat Florida and Southern beat 2 teams in the TBI) 80 teams that won over 20 games.

The Northeast Conference as a whole played 11. 1-11. 12 teams in ALL with 20 or more wins.

So who is the SWAC ducking???

No. We need to stop running away and start competing.

You mean the running that schools like TxSU and Valley usually run TO at an average of 11-13 OOC games a year? If it's ONE thing SWAC basketball doesn't do is run from playing games. You can get on SWAC schools for not scheduling smarter (like the MEAC does instead of 10-12 money games) but we don't play wussies in OOC games

I'm going to be honest, we have start hiring quality coaches and donating. You can expect to compete, when you load your schedule with P-5 teams that you can't beat in the first place.

Just donating - hiring quality coaches cost money and these P5 teams overpay assistants who would be great swac coaches to be an assistant and mid majors now pay more than normal for the same guys

If we get them back in the swac usually they've been canned

HBCU football fan: In order to compete in the FCS, schools need to play a tough nonconference schedule.

HBCU basketball fan: In order to compete in Division I, schools have to stop playing a tough nonconference schedule.
Silly isn't it.

The common thread between both is recruiting the BEST talent, which collectively we are not. Looking at 155lb skinny guards and emaciated skeleton-like tall guys who cannot shoot a FT % > 37% is seriously played out.

Ditto for scholarshipping obese girls who cannot jump 2-3 inches, slow as 12 degree molasses, and also cannot shoot that much smaller ball.

1) The basketball program has to take those games to get the checks to FUND the entire athletic department in some cases.

2) What Swac coaches salaries. Lindsey Hunter was making 75K in 2019.
Lance Irwin was making 100K at Chicago State and they are STRAPPED for cash.
There are some WNBA players who make more than that and they STILL have to play overseas.
Donyell Marshall was making more than Johnnie Jones. Marshall's record form 2016-2021 40-104 at Central Conn. No post season since 2007.
Jones in 4 years 76-53 3 post seasons never finished below 3rd.

The SWAC guys play P-5 schools. While we got guys who don't making more and having losing records.

And what made Mike Davis leave for Detroit Mercy?? That can't be paying more the SWAC.
