While one would expect that million-dollar donations only come from multi-millionaire venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, C-level employees and professional athletes, chances are they just as likely to come from retirees making an estate gift or a long-time donor who made incrementally larger gifts over a period of many years.
I remember my first million-dollar gift as if it happened yesterday, and of the many details I’ll never forget, one stands out: the largest gift that the individual had ever made to the athletic department where I worked was $1,500 (and even half of that was matched by his employer, so truthfully, his largest gift was $750). How did someone who’d previously never made more than a donation of $60/month become a million-dollar donor? In short, it was because of a successfully operating annual fund program. Because this donor received regular contact and information from the institution, he grew confident in how the investments he made produced student support.
