Fans breaking your rank.... Has this happen to you?

SIR_GRAM

Legend
Saturday at the Alcorn game the band was lining up to march back to the band room after the game... well i was in line but we werent called to attention yet, but we were in formation.... Dis dude in some Dred Locks, *GUESSIN HE WAS FROM ALCORN, CUZ GSU FANS AN STUDENTS KNOW DA DEAL* like i say dis dude, gon be on his phone jus big chillin an try to cut my rank an go through the band.. so i stoped him an was like *Ay man you got to go around, you cant go through here... I had my arm on his shoulder an everything* You know this ***** gone push my arm off him b*he aint do it hard though, thankfully, Cuz it woulda been some Trouble, Trouble, Trouble.... Anyway he gon push my arm an continue to proceed through the band to the other side... Now bandsmen past an present... I ask you...

Has This Happen To You?
A. Should I have used a little more force after he moved my arm an got krunk wit him starting a scene an even maybe a fight which would have led to the first band fight in GSU history, embarrasing the school, fans, parents, faculty, and distroying the Legacy.

B. Let it go like i did and walk away mad

C. Call the Frat on his arse...

This sort of thing HAS happened to the GSU band before, when I was in the band. We were marching back to Dunbar after practice one day from the Pit and a dude on the track team tried to cut through the clarinet section, got stopped by one of the clarinet players who was TBS. They had words:argue: . He called her a B!tch and it was on:splat: !!!! Dm stopped the band I looked back from the trumpet sect. and the band behind me was gone past the sax section whipping the track teams azz!

Every now and then you got some body bold enough to go through the band. He knew what he was doing because he picked the clarinet sect. to go through. He knew better than to try that sh!t in the front of the band.

If that does happen to you again, just be as polite as possible about it as you can. 9 times out of 10 they WILL respect it. On that other 1 time...use your best judgement:splat: !

You did the right thing by letting it go. Remember, MANY people dont know about your ranks, customs, band laws, etc. All they see is a shortcut from point A to point B to get to the ticket booth, family, or cokes/food. Period. Next thing ya know they get MANHANDLED and feel they have been disrespected by THE ENEMY. (Opposing team/school.)

I dread to think about what could have happened had you lost your cool and called the other bandmembers or the frat. Things could have really gotten out of hand and by keeping your cool you probably avoided someone getting SERIOUSLY hurt or even killed. These cats come 2 the games packin' nowadays. Hate 4 loss of life to occur over someone simply passin' through and not knowing any better.

Remember.....you did put your hand on him. The judge doesnt' care about breakin ranks. They wanna know how it started. Dont' get me wrong... Im' older, wiser, and lack the short fuse I had back then. Im' also no dummy and realize that it's a new day. That thing could have snowballed into a RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE.

Just think....today we could have ALL BEEN SHAKING OUR HEADS SAYING "R.I.P. SIR GRAM" and how tragic and senseless this was. BRAVO to you for being the better man.

Next time someone breaks your ranks, just say (without grabbing him)...."No disrespect my brother, but this is our ranks and we cant let folks pass through the band. Appreciate it". You dont have to grab....simply place your hand on his shoulder and talk to him like a friend. Most folks (with sense) will say "oh...my bad. I didnt' know." If you have a FOOL who cant' handle it....let the ignant' sucka pass. He's lookin 4 trouble will find it soon enough.

Good advice. It happens to EVERYONE's program ranging from our own fans to visitors alike. What's important is KEEPING YOUR COOL. Ive' seen major beatdowns occur 4 this so-called crime. And 4 what?!?! Some folks just dont know any better.

Ive' seen it go both ways. After the BEATDOWN them fellas go get their boyz and hardware. Next thing ya know....you are a target with that bandsuit on. You just finished marching 8 to 5 and have NO CLUE you are about 2 be ambushed like youre' in Iraq. You represent more people than yourselves and must KEEP COOL.

you messed up when you put your hands on him... like Biff said ALOT of folks dont know anything about the breaking ranks thing. People dont like to be touched.

Happened to me and my CBs in the trombone section..... We were told to NEVER let ANYONE outside of the trombone section or the DM break rank. NOBODY.......EVER....... And we didn't. no force was used, we just kept closing in the gaps dude would try to get through, then we told him to cut through the baritones!!!!!:D

I have seen it done during my years at JSU, and back then: you were asking for an arse-whopping if you walked through the band (whether you were aware of it being a thing to NOT do or not).

First, you'll get a warning that you can't do it. After the first warning, you're on your own. I have seen some serious beatdowns when tried. Ask a light-skin que from JSU who didn't take the first warning.

Don't see why you said he was from Alcorn because ALL the alcorn fans know not to do that....but yes, this has happened before...best thing...just place your instrument in front of them and tell them not to cut thru...now is they decide to do so anyways....your own section should already be on top of that...no blows should be thrown until the other part does so FIRST!

Gary Anderson?

Gary Anderson?

That's him!!!!! :lmao: :lmao:

Oh my God, that boy took a beatdown! And what's so bad is that he decided to walk through the WORST section you could possibly walk through: War and Thunder! :smh: All you saw were drum mallets in the air and coming down on him.

And then his frats were sitting under their tree NOT doing anything. :lmao:

He came before the band in the band hall and apologized like the next day.

It is not protocol and we would just stop them and direct them in the same direction in which they came.

I'm not losing my life over some daggone breaking rank.

More than a few people have felt the wrath and learned a very valuable lesson foolin around with the Jukebox. That was the issue that started that whole PV debacle a few years back, even though they were the first to make it physical!

Yeah this has happened to me while I was marching at Alcorn, but no force was needed we just stopped them. I've also so people try to get mad or crunk about it but nothing has ever really popped off.

Ummm, basically.

We had one dude to try us my crab year while marching into a pep rally. He wasn't stupid- shid it's one of you and got dayum 260 of us.

Yeah this has happen to me also and the funny thing is the reason theirs no FORCE NEED is BECASUE the WHOLE SECTION or SECTIONS that sees that person coming through says "WOOOOOOooooo!!!!!!! lol with that ARM OUT lol

Now If they want to get CRUNK and proceed esp in the stands between the Bones and Drums like griff say " If I come up there, I better see some blood come from that n***a, You better bust his head to the WHITE MEAT LOL"

Sometimes you have to use your head and give folks the benefit of the doubt of not knowing about "band ranks". Besides, picture the following scenarios if you had done more.

A) Dude has a gun

B) Dude has a knife

C) Dude has other friends and you end up in a brawl thats broadcast all over the news and brings shame to your university.

You see it as disrespect, he probably just saw it as moving through an open space to get where he needed to go. I wouldnt do it because I have knowledge about band ranks but I also am a licensed firearm carrier. If I DIDNT know about it and some band cats tried to jump me for breaking through the line since I had no clue about the "band code", well...you get where i'm going with this.

Sometimes it pays to be the cooler head in the situation.

I dig what you're saying but jumping on a dude because he cut through your line aint kosher either. Best solution would be to explain to the person WHY they cant go through because contrary to what many of us see in our mind the majority of people at a game have no clue about cutting through ranks. And especially with as crazy as folks are these days you really just never know what you may be getting yourself into.

Now if you explain the situation and he still try to buck then hey, thats on him. But if I didnt know any better and walked through and some cats just swung on me....oh...yea you're gonna have me outnumbered....THEN...but later on...and you know how black folk are, especially if theres a lot of people looking.

I can tell that you've never marched in a SWAC band!

Marching in a SWAC band isnt going to make me lose my common sense. When folks are shooting and killing 14 year old kids for throwin an egg at their car I think there are more important things in life. This is 2006 and soon to be 07, a lot of people have gotten killed this year alone for a lot less than this. Like I stated before, if you explain the situation and they buck anyway then they deserve what they get. If you swing first and ask questions later you just might end up on the news, and for what?
