The first appearance that FAMU's Marching 100 will make this season is already costing the school's athletic department and it won't participate at Tennessee State's homecoming unless the band's trip is paid in part by TSU.

FAMU president Elmira Mangum vehemently told the 220 Quarterback Club, a FAMU support organization, on Monday that she wants a share of the revenues from the TSU game for the band to show up. Mangum spoke to the club at the University Club House on FAMU's campus.

She said she's unsuccessfully tried for about three weeks to negotiate her demand, estimating that TSU will make about $80,000 from the game.

"I need a whole lot of things before I let the band go to Tennessee State," Mangum said. "So, that's my position on it."

The band will perform in South Florida when FAMU plays the University of Miami on Sept. 6. That comes with a cost of about $13,000 for the seats that band members will occupy at Sun Life Stadium, said athletics director Kellen Winslow, who was not too pleased with the way the contract was negotiated to include the band.

Winslow didn't negotiate that contract. FAMU will make just over $700,000 for playing the Hurricanes, Winslow said.

In addition to Miami, the band will travel to North Carolina to face A&T on Oct. 25 and Bethune-Cookman on Nov. 22 in the Florida Classic in Orlando. It wasn't immediately known if A&T will pay for the band, but the Classic is jointly promoted by FAMU and B-CU.

Football was front and center when Mangum made her initial remarks. She said the program deserves better facilities, but if that is to happen football can't be expected to pay the way for every other sport.

"I don't know a whole lot about sports, but I do know that sometimes the weight can be too heavy," she said. "In this case, financially it's too heavy for one sport to be carrying."

FAMU's band coming to TnSt's homecoming is not going to put any additional money in TnSt's cofer considering that it is homecoming and the people will be at that game regardless. If it was some kind of classic or just a regular game, it might be considered but other than that if I was TnSt I wouldn't consider paying them to come.

Yeah, we have known for at least two weeks they were not coming to Jackson. They said they were "not ready" because their students have to be cleared. Yet, they were ready to go to Orlando last year for the first game. I would think they had a harder time "getting ready" last year than this year. I knew then that they were broke.... It has to suck for a band program to only see one or two other programs per year.

The only way TSU should agree to pay for FAMU is if they in turn agree (IN WRITING) to help pay for TSU next year to come to Florida. ..and how they gonna complain about having to pay $13K out of a $700K payout. I wouldn't even put that in the paper. smh

...and that President acts like she does not know that football carries the whole dept at pretty much EVERY school....

This whole article is not a good reflection on the FAMU leadership.

I personally agree with the President and AD...they are pretty much letting their alumni and anyone else know 'We are broke . So if you want to see the band travel outside of Tallahassee,FL you need to pay for it."

I dont see the band traveling no where this season unless it to the BCC game..

Again is she drunk. Don't nobody want to see that band and if they keep this up they will forever be a memory or a shell of their former selves...

They're going to the NCA&T game in NC.

We would be better off scheduling a home-and-home with BCU. :tup:

Maybe FAMU's Alumni Band members could raise donation monies to help their band program or maybe they can do like Grambling's football team and get a few big corporations to sponsor some of their needs. Like Grambling, maybe they are using the Jackson State game and Tenn State's homecoming to make this pitch.

The 100 couldn't care less about traveling to another schools stadium...trust me, if the 100 wants to be there, they would be there...period

It was in TSU and BCU's contract that the home team help pay for the visiting band to travel...that was stated by some of their alums on the MEAC board

This clarification was posted by the Tallahassee Democrat earlier today:

"CLAIRFICATION: Responding to a question at Monday’s meeting of the 220 Quarterback Club, FAMU President Elmira Mangum said she wanted to “share the cost” with Tennessee State for the FAMU band to travel to Nashville, Tennessee, for the Sept. 27 game. A story in Tuesday’s edition of The Tallahassee Democrat stated Mangum wants to share in the game’s revenue to pay for the band’s trip."

Again, we HAVE money to take the band out of town

Dude, what FCS school asks another school to help foot their bill? It's obvious you don't have the money and that's fine, but don't try and blame another school for not helping to foot YOUR bill.

If that's the case, why don't you guys help foot the bill for other schools who come to Bragg stadium? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard.

Actually it does happen.......

I remember when we went to FAMU my senior year, they paid part of our transportation cost with the agreement we would do the same the following year since we had a home & home agreement.

You can even get some of the PWC's to pay the cost as they see it as a plus for them since they will get a increase in attendance when it is advertised that one of bands will be there to entertain the crowd.

Exactly, Fiyah...it does happen from time to time

The only issue here is that it should have been done when the contract was negotiated...HOWEVER, our president and AD weren't around when the contracts were signed
