Shazor's bail cut in half

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- A Florida A&M football player who police say tried to run down two officers with his car was released from jail Friday after a judge lowered his bond.

Carl Shazor Jr. of Detroit, who is charged with two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, posted the bond after Judge Thomas A. Beale lowered it from $500,000 to $250,000, Shazor's attorney confirmed.

Shazor and fellow Florida A&M player Ray Eddington Jr. of Detroit were arrested June 20 after a high-speed chase following what police said was a staged drug buy with an informant who purchased crack cocaine from Eddington. Eddington was riding in a car driven by Shazor.

Police said when they tried to stop the men after the purchase, Shazor stopped near a police vehicle blocking the street, then drove around it and toward two officers.

Shazor faces 11 charges ranging from assault with intent to commit murder to conspiracy to sell crack cocaine near a school zone. The number of charges is largely a technical matter that gives jurors an option to convict on a lesser assault charge than attempted murder.

Attorney Cornelius Pitts said Shazor is being overcharged.

The Associated Press was unable to reach Isabella County prosecutors for comment Friday evening.

Eddington is charged with resisting arrest and possession with intent to deliver drugs, said his attorney, Carla Marable.
