Exam fraud, recruit payments among NCAA accusations against UL-Lafayette, ex-assistant

LAFAYETTE — The NCAA has accused former Louisiana-Lafayette assistant football coach David Saunders of exam fraud and providing recruits payments for living and educational expenses, as well as failing to comply with an NCAA investigation.


“We take the allegations very seriously and have fully cooperated with the investigation,” UL-Lafayette Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said in a statement released Sunday afternoon. “We’ve been committed to finding the truth as much as the NCAA.”


According to the statement released by the school, “university representatives will appear later this fall at a confidential hearing. … Several months following the hearing, the (NCAA’s) Committee on Infractions will publicly issue its decision.”

Until then, the university has self-imposed several penalties, including two years of probation; a total reduction of 11 scholarships between now and the 2017-18 season; a reduction in off-campus recruiting opportunities, official visits and recruiting communications; and vacated contests in which an ineligible student-athlete participated during the 2011 season.

The university indicated it would vacate the entire 2011 football season, including the program’s New Orleans Bowl victory against San Diego State. The school contemplated self-imposing a postseason ban for this season, but “determined that such a penalty would be unduly severe to address violations committed by a single individual that were in no way indicative of systemic, program-wide noncompliance with NCAA rules.

+1. Precisely. Self-reporting shows a desire of culpability, accountability, and need to punish self for a problem that was caught by itself in hopes of the ncaa gov'ing body not coming down too hard on itself during their discovery/punishment phase, since one may have already implemented measures to (future) identify, control, and stop any malfeasance. Also, causes the ncaa not to look into other programs for malfeasance and focus solely on the one @ issue. ;)
 
Man, yall think Valley would tell on themselves? They'll blame Bush, Obama, Da Man, and anyone else before admitting they was cheating. I think they should be awarded a ribbon for cheating though. Show that atleast they trying. They should be given a "Participation" ribbon.

I don't waste my time on CLOWNS. That's what they want. If this same CLOWN cheered for a player from his own school when they got hurt, you know they don't care about trolling every thread relating to Valley, SU, Alcorn or ASU and derailing them knowing they're won't be any consequences (and the little snickering cheerleaders egging them on)

Valley really wants to be considered a legit D1 team, but they just don't have it. Want to be in the conversation with the Big Boys. They seriously need to look at doing something with your school though. It's just wasting taxpayers money right now.

Bama State self reported violations and imposed almost the death penalty on its program in 2006. That's why A&M was beating the crap out us until 2010 when the self imposed penalties ended. TXSU did the same thing in 2010 and their football program has recently return to its 2010 level.
