ESPN's Van Pelt rips Maryland students for lack of support

"I didn't know how many people would be here, but I wasn't surprised because our fans have been so great," Gary Williams said then.

He was slightly less enthusiastic on Wednesday, though he couldn't touch Scott Van Pelt. After a few snide remarks on Twitter, Van Pelt went on a three-minute tirade against Maryland students during an appearance on ESPN 980. Here is most of his speech:

"I was as angry....I still am," he began. "I may say things that get me into trouble. I just don't care. When I turned on the television and I saw that wall where the students are supposed to sit and it looked like the Longwood game, all I wondered is what happened to my university.

"And I know what happened: They started letting in a lot more smart people that are really driven about their futures, and you guys had to study last night, and good for you. We had class back when I went to school, too. And we went to games. Because part of a college experience is a well-rounded experience, and going to athletic games is a big part of that.

"And our students right now at Maryland have this attitude where they can't be bothered to go. Like the football games, they come late and leave early. There was a football game this fall where it was about 50-to-Idontevenknow against Wake Forest, and the student section was empty. I think it was 'hot' that day, or something.

Many students are lazy these days. It's a shame they will just stay in the dorms and lay around and won't attend a game.
 
I have never understood some people that attend and that have attended high schools and universities. If you rather lay in your dorm room, play video games, chill and look at tv and just don't support your own school's football, basketball, baseball games etc. you are just plain lazy and pathetic.
 
Van Pelt, by being part of ESPN, contributes to apathy about going to games. Doesn't ESPN promote the ability to watch games on ESPN 360 via the PC, laptop and on other mobile devices?

Besides, the NFL -- the country's most popular league -- is concerned that attendance league wide is dropping. Why? With fantasy football, HDTV, ticket prices and the ability to follow multiple games at a time, more folks are deciding to stay home.

The league is now brainstorming ways to bring the in-home NFL experience to the in-stadium experience.

That's exactly right. It's becoming more and more expensive and more and more of a hassle to attend games combined with technology making it more and more viable to watch the game at home. We're an ADD society, why go and spend all day watching one game when you can stay home and follow 10 at once.
 
True, but I will bet you a dollar to a dime these kids aren't watching on tv...360....or evening listening to the radio.....there just seems to be disinterest almost across the board. Hell, UH (puke puke gag gag) is drawing flies.

There are just too many distractions for everyone these days. We live in an era where if we miss a program or sporting event we can get the highlights on ESPN, catch the episode on Hulu or re rack it on Tivo or YouTube.

If you are not a little kid, going to the game is not special anymore.

I remember going to the old Chicago Stadium to attend my first Bulls game with my mom. I was around 9 at the time. My God I was in awe the whole game. The same thing when I went to my first Cubs game. Couldn't believe it.

I see many adults during games texting and or talking on the phone. I saw Scottie Pippen sitting in the front row during a recent Bulls game texting.

There are people now who like to watch games on TV and at the same time interact with friends on Facebook or Twitter rather than be surround by thousands of people where you have to yell just to be heard by your neighbors.

A lot of these new stadiums now have all sorts of bells in whistles inside them that cater to the entertainment options of the fans. When I went to U.S. Cellular Field last summer there were kids playing MLB 2K11 in the concourse, while mom and dad were buying cell phones at the U.S. Cellular store a few feet away.

There are bars, clubs and restaurants and all kinds of shops inside modern facilities now.

I only could image what is inside Jerry World.

People don't go to the game just to go to the game these days. People go to the game to be seen and hangout.
