Eli Manning to Chargers? Not if Archie has a say so!!

Chargers insist they will follow their plan

The Chargers have the top pick in the draft. Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning is projected, by most accounts, as the top player available.

One problem -- Manning evidently does not want to go to San Diego.

Manning's agent, Tom Condon, informed the Chargers that Archie Manning does not want his son to be drafted by the team. Chargers general manager A.J. Smith confirmed the news Wednesday night, a day after the elder Manning visited team officials at the Chargers training complex.

I guess daddy Manning is going to make sure his son doesn't end up like Ryan Leaf in San Diego. I wonder what is going to happen if the Chargers draft Eli anyway?

Eli,

The New York Giants need a quarterback like you. The Giants GM better find a way to get you by 12 Saturday.

Do y'all think he can handle the pressure in NYC? Their and fans don't play. Ask A-Rod.

That's the first thig I thought about when this story broke. Why is Arhie Manning so hell bent on Eli playing in New York? Doesn't he realize the moment Eli fails to meet expectations the media and fans in New York will rip him a new one?? (And odds are Eli won't live up to the hype .... he ain't his brother, especially upstairs.)

Not so fast my friend. LOL. Archie knows what the whole league knows. Coach Marty S is an idiot and not good for a young QB. Also the San Diego front office/owner has had alot of issues and are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. Remember Archie did not say a word when Peyton was coming out. The Colts let it be known that he was their pick. Marty and company are BSing. If they want Philip Rivers they need to just trade down to get him. The problem is the rest of the league knows it. Marty is so dumb he wants another Kosar type thrower and is enamored with Rivers who is good but no Eli. So I can see Archie tripping on the way it is being handled. Even Al Davis would be a better fit for Eli than San Diego.

I feel sorry for poor LaDanian Tomilson who is a stud of a rb but stuck with Marty and San Diego. :smh:

If San Diego can get a good QB and a WR, they would be good to go offensively. They have Tomlison. He a decent RB but he needs some other offensive weapons to take the load off of him.

Archie confirms it: Eli doesn't want Chargers

From combined sources

Whether the San Diego Chargers plan to take Eli Manning with the No. 1 pick in Saturday?s NFL draft remains to be seen, but this much was made certain today: Manning and his family would prefer that the Chargers look elsewhere.

Archie Manning, the father of the record-setting Ole Miss quarterback, confirmed today during a luncheon at Tavern on the Green in Central Park that he thinks it?s in his son?s best interest to play for another team.

What Archie Manning denied is that he says the New York Giants would be the best fit for Eli.

The story broke Wednesday night. This morning the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Eli Manning?s agent, Tom Condon, told Chargers general manager A.J. Smith the family had ruled out San Diego.

I am with JR on this one. I can't see a young QB developing under Marty. While Tom Couglin is a loudmouth, I think that Manning would be better with him than Marty. It does not look like San Diego is headed anyway anytime fast.

As I see it the Falcons won the Michael Vick trade a few years ago. Vick is a lot better off than Drew Brees is right now.

Well maybe if he pouts like Steve Francis did when he was picked by the Raptors, San Diego might workout a trade to get rid of Manning.

Does anyone remember Elway and his father telling the Colts not to draft Elway and the Colts did anyway?

Not Archie Manning's fault!

This is a power play by Charger's general manager A.J. Smith. He squealed on Archie, who is a class guy. Its about money and political/bargaining power. All these other teams have their guy picked out and now Eli is back in the mix. The question is, who can Smith screw and how much can he make from it?

Squealed on Archie? Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought it was in free agency where you get to choose where you want to go. The whole purpose of the draft is for the worst teams to draft the best players. How does Archie Manning get to decide where his son plays? If Kellen Winslow, Sr. had pulled this stunt, he would've been called every controlling name in the book. Archie may be a class act, but this was a classless move on his part.

What I meant is that Archie talked to AJ and AJ spilled the beans. Archie is not the only guy talking to teams about players but AJ sold out Archie for SD's benefit. Despicable. Look for AJ to be departing any position of importance soon.

Who can blame Eli and Archie?

Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning (left) talks about his sons, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton (center) and University of Mississippi quarterback and NFL top draft prospect Eli, at a luncheon in New York on Thursday. The NFL draft will start at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway, chosen first in the 1983 NFL Draft, refused to play for the Baltimore Colts, a lousy, poorly managed football team.

Elway's agent, Marvin Demoff, explained why: "We don't want John Elway to become the NFL's next Archie Manning."

Twenty-one years later, Eli Manning of Ole Miss apparently doesn't want to become the NFL's next Archie Manning, either. His dad, the original Archie Manning, happens to agree.
Can you blame them?

Exactly!!!!
Not to mention that they're coming across as a bunch of arrogant prima donnas who thinks Eli's talent is so much so that they can play pick and choose. Stuff like this cast a player in a bad light.

I'll say it again. Archie needs to sit down and shut the L up.

Better to say what's on your mind now than get stuck on a team that has not won nothing, or even had a winning season since the mis '90's.

If Eli go to this team, he will be killed. They don't have an offensive line. At least six O-Lmen has left the team since last year. Hell, they don't even know if the coach will be there after next year.

RUN ELI RUN. :D :D

yeah, that's the ticket.
Every year the top draft picks should say which teams they want to play for.
:smh:

this aint college.

MH .......................

What law is in place that say a person need to keep his mouth shut about THEIR FUTURE.

This non-sence is the same as the crap about, athelete's need to keep their mouth closed because they sign a million dollar contract.

It's plenty of broke, career shortened, players that wish they had spoke up in the beginning. Elway ain't mad.

And you right, THIS AIN'T COLLEGE. IT'S THEIR PROFESSIONAL CAREER'S.

Isn't that what the union is for? Didn't the NFLPA agree on the principles of the draft? I guess that doesn't matter since it's his career. I guess he isn't going to join the union then.

I say play by the rules everyone else plays by. If everyone had a father with the kind of influence that Archie has then it would be cool. I guess he will determine when he wants to start, too.

No...Archie does not get to decide, but Eli does. He would be good to listen to Archie!

Draftees are restricted agents until they sign. Their RIGHT to play in the current season is controlled by the drafting team, but they don't HAVE to play. Eli is not hurting for any money. So, he can simply say to the NY Giants or any number of teams that he would consider playing for, "I am interested in playing for you if you choose to draft me", or, as he said to SD, "I am not interested in playing for your organization. Do not draft me to play there." In any case, SD may choose to draft him because they feel he is more valuable in trade than he actually is in the draft.
