'60 Minutes' hires popular BET reporter

NEW YORK, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Black Entertainment Television reporter Ed Gordon, who snagged the first O.J. Simpson interview after the murder trial, has joined CBS' '60 Minutes Wednesday.'
Gordon's first piece for the mid-week news magazine will air Wednesday when the 44-year-old reporter interviews Jamie Foxx, star of Ray Charles biography 'Ray,' the New York Post reported Tuesday.
'I worked with Don Hewitt this week, and to see Mike Wallace and Ed Bradley walking the halls, and talking with them, it's pretty heady,' Gordon said of the veteran newsmen.
Details of the job are still undecided, but Gordon said he and producers have talked about 10 to 15 stories.
'I know they want me to do a combination of both news stories and show-biz profiles. I would like to think I'm best at the interview and I love profiles and love to do them,' Gordon said.
'So few people get invited to this party. For years they've done such great storytelling -- and I love being a part of that,' he said.
BET canceled Gordon's nightly interview show last year.

Hmmm, I think Dan Rather is on the Clock. Look for CBS to go younger and less partisan.

Congratulations to Mr. Gordon. BET could careless about presenting any kind of intellectually stimulating news programs or documentaries these days. His talents were being wasted with them. CBS will put him in a prime-time spotlight where his journalistic prowess can garner him the kind of recognition he deserves.

i heard him on tom joyner this morning. the interview may be pretty good with foxx. he said that it will be a very emotional interview. gordon was o.k. on bet, a little boring in his presentation but it was informative.

I also wonder the length of an appropriate timeframe before Dan Rather will make the announcement, that "after 40+ years of dedicated service, he has elected to retire and to pursue other interests."

It still tickles me when I think of the Ed Gordon/Tavis Smiley situation at BET. I new when Ed returned to BET from MSNBC it was going to be pure drama and comedy at BET.

Both of those brothers are "BAD TO THE BONES" though. And, they were good for BET and like wise for them. Both are excelling and are on top of their game................That is what I like........Kick Azz African American Intellectuals!

The thing about Ed Gordon is he reports the story and does not try to twist it to benefit a partisan view.

I remember when he interviewed Trent Lott on BET. He was practically lobbing "softballs" to Trent so he could hit them out of the park.

Ole Trent kept missing them though.lol
But instead of roasting him, Ed basically let him explain his foot and mouth disease.

I don't think Dan Rather would have done the same.

I saw the interview with Trent Lott and agree he did a good job. However though, I have seen Ed in a not so docile form. One interview that comes to mind is when he was hammering Jessie Jackson so bad a few years back until Jackson told him (on television) that he would not talk to him like that off camera.

I believe that Tavis is partisan. Ed is not a transparent read and I would venture to say that he is moderate. I have seen Ed matriculate and believe he will be an excellent addition to 60 minutes. I believe that it is a travesty that BET loss so many great news oriented shows and personalities. On the other hand, I am pleased that some were able to get mainstream opportunities. Unfortunately, the erosion of these shows negate an excellent training ground and opportunity for future Ed Gordans and Tavis Smileys of the world. I believe our community is in need of more television programming for the black intellectual. MBC is trying and have an excellent hour television news cast with a few decent related shows but it still leaves a lot to be desired. I notice an effort although nominal from the black t.v. network TV1 also but they have not even implemented a news cast. I would say the Armstrong Williams Show is decent on that network. I guess until something changes we will have to be satisfied with C-Span and the Fox News Networks (every time I look at Fox I need to tilt my head to the left to get some balance  ) of the world.

JROCK, I don't have the benefit of seeing that interview with Jessie that you had. But I like both of them brothers personally.....Tavis is my frat btw...(nupe).

But Tavis got on bad terms with BET when he went outside their realms and did his own interviews without their permission.

Best of luck to them both in their future endeavors though!

But I still think that Ed is destined for bigger and better things at CBS in the next few years.

I think that within 5-10 years that Ed will be the new face of CBS news.

I am happy for Ed Gordon. I will start watching again some CBS broadcasts. (I rarely watch CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, or Fox anymore.) He is a true professional.

As for Tavis, he admitted that he is biased. Although on his radio program he interviews a lot of people with opposing views and has conservatives on for commentary. He is not the opposite of Fox news.
