East: Things looking up for Southern — yes, really

As the Southern football team reports Sunday for the start of preseason camp, things are looking up around campus.


Yeah, several players are academically ineligible.

Yeah, it’s unclear who will be in the athletic director’s office when the first practice takes place Monday.

And, sure, it’s not certain where that first practice will be.

But things really are looking up when you put the start of this camp in the context of the recent past surrounding the Jaguars, who generally have responded well to adversity.

Three years ago, the team endured a coaching change after a dismal 0-2 start and played respectably in winning four of its last nine games.

Two years ago, the team was on the verge of falling to 0-3 before managing the first of two comebacks from double-digit deficits to win games that were catalysts for a Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.

Due to elevated water levels of the Mississippi River, Army Corps of Engineers have restricted construction to install the football practice field light poles as a part of the Jaguar Park project until the river recedes.

As a result, Southern University football will conduct its first week of fall camp practices at the Louisiana Leadership Institute on 5763 Hooper Road.

SU athletics anticipates practice returning to campus once clearance for the project's continuation is received and the light poles have been installed.

What the River gotta do with light poles? Do they have to run the underground wires to the river?
 
What is up with the ineligible stuff happening at SU? Are their spring grades so horrible that summer school is mandatory?

Name one college team that won't have ineligible players. Some are grades, most are due to progress. SU isn't handing out grades like some other schools. Players have to earn everything they get.

Oh wow I guess it has its pros and cons on being next to the river. Y'all should build a stadium to overlook the river tho. Take ASU design with the away side being low and the Home side with the view of the river talk about amazing!
 
I don't ever remember the Mississippi River being this high, this late in the season. River usually goes down in April, May, June.

Mumford isn't moving lol. But the underground currents are the issue.
 
The only bad thing about that is for cold games. The river would make it feel like Wisconsin but I do think he is talking about something similiar to McLane at Baylor

Big difference. The Brazos River, which flows through Waco and Baylor's campus, is dammed just north of the city and there's a smaller dam near the campus that makes a town lake. It's a similar setup to the Colorado River in Austin. Ain't no dams nowhere near Southern that would control the Mississippi like that.

Also, you'd definitely have to worry about erosion or sinking if you build really close to the river. There are spots on the campus where there is bedrock while there are others that aren't.

Co sign that's the TRUTH........ everyone will qualify unlike with Comegy we always had 2 folks that didn't qualify and we always lost 2 good players because of him every year also and those players always go to lower conf and do a great job SMDH.. Im so glad we don't have this mess

This is why it's not even worth the bother, IMO. I wouldn't risk having a multi-million dollar facility gradually sink into the marshes for aesthetic purposes.
