DWYER ALUM SHAWN MCCLAINE TO GRAMBLING STATE

usa today

Sgt Backfire
Former Dwyer running back Shawn McClaine is headed to Grambling State.

McClaine (5-8, 170) spent last season at Fork Union Military School in Virginia. He will be a preferred walk-on at Grambling.

McClaine was a first-team Palm Beach Post All-Area defensive back as a senior in 2010. He was also Dwyer’s main ballcarrier, gaining 1,468 yards and 19 touchdowns on 161 carries.

He appears to be light in the behind. Also, the title of the thread should not have "Dwyer" in it considering the proven Dwyer from Auburn is on the market for a new team.

I have a feeling what approach they are going to take with all of those running backs.

Roberts will get the bulk of the carries, most likely but I wouldn't "pound" him too much either. He's been working on his pass catching so look for him to get some touches that way as well...but playing 3-4 rb's is very doable these days in college football. It's gonna help Roberts to have a tandem back and several who can come in and give some carries to help keep all of them fresh. A fresh Dawrence Roberts in the 4th quarter with his speed against a tired Defense is something that will work out well for us.

Yes...he's kinda small to be either a running back or a db, but that doesn't scare me off. Apparently the opinion of some GSU folks have changed about the size of the players nowadays... prior to last season, there would have been outcries about his measurables and how he doesn't look like a Grambling Player! I'm so glad Doug didn't buy into that foolishness!

I like Roberts. I want to see how well he develops with his pass catching skills. He would be deadly in space on a swing pass (which is basically an extended handoff) or some screens.

I agree... he and I got acquainted via FB and we still "chat" from time to time. Comes across as an humble and hard working young man. He's offered to meet my grandson this Fall, so I will probably ride up to catch a Saturday practice and let my grandson get exposed to that wonderful piney woods/clay dirt/winning football environment.

MB, you just can't let it go. Man, Doug and staff turned down 5'10 all state LBs. Size does matter. 5'8 170lbs isn't bad size for RB, but I see this kid primary on Special teams. We have 4 studs in the backfield already.

You are 100% correct. Have you seen the 2012 offensive line yet? They will be better than last season, mark my word. TI am glad Doug know understands that he needs true talent and depth with the running backs. The importance of the running game is something Doug just didn't get in his first term. I used to hate how he would try control the clock in the second half through the damn air. I am glad we picked up this kid.

I bet he turned them down based on evaluation and not because of size... No, I'm still having too much fun with "they don't look like Gramblinites" stupidity that some used to bash kids who contributed to our program. C'mon man, you know what was behind that and what person perpetrated that idiocy. Now what Doug continue to sign talent based on ability... remember all that rhetoric about having 6'3" receivers and dbs? I bet there's still not an abundance of those types... most corners are in the 5'9" to 5' 11" range. The key thing coaches look for are how they turn and run, not how high they measure up against a wall. C'mon TGee... you're too smart to have fallen for that foolishness. Size matters, but talent is much more important.

Dude, go take a damn knap. Broadway ass was simply was a piss poor recruiter. That is simple fact. Who in the hell recruits 5'4 QBs at the D1 level. I am so glad he left Grambling under the covers of night fall. With all Spears talent being gone, we were headed towards a disaster. We got that Grambling talent back now you heard me. Whaaaa

He and Robinson both stated they were targeting bigger LBs. Size matters, man. I have nothing to do with the issues you have with GMW. Although I feel Broadway was a piss poor recruiter, it was never personal with me. If Doug recruited 5'4 QBs, 220 lb DT, and 4.8 speed receivers I would also have problem with that.

That same 5'4 QB had offers from two SEC schools. Broadway was not a bad recruiter. I was never of fan of Broadway, but the man is a good coach who brings in talent. I just hated his style of coaching. He was so very boring. I felt like I was watching the Army vs VMI game so many times when he was the head coach.
