Duer Sharp's Incompetence As Commissioner Is Reason For SWAC's Downfall

They say shit rolls downhill. If that’s the case, the SWAC is in serious trouble because the conference is led by the most incompetent commissioner in the history of organized sports, Duer Sharp.

Sharp is not keeping the SWAC up with similar conferences. As a matter of fact, the SWAC is falling behind. From establishing baseball tournament sites only two weeks prior to the start date, to being conspicuously absent during the most embarrassing moment in recent SWAC memory (the Grambling football walk-out), Duer Sharp has demonstrated that he is not person to advance the SWAC to higher levels.

Who affiliated with the SWAC didn’t hang their heads in shame when the SWAC office opened the opportunity for ineligible teams to participate in the SWAC basketball tournament? Sharp is not finding a way to dig the SWAC out of its situation; he keeps making the hole deeper. What sane person would invite all 10 SWAC bands to the SWAC football championship game when half the schools in the conference are academically eligible? Wouldn’t that money have been better spent on member schools helping them improve their APR?

I like what Get Ready had to say. I really do hate that my UAPB falls under one of the schools ineligible, but I do agree that we (UAPB) should honor NCAA rules/regulations and not compete. To me, it sends a loud and strong message about how priority in the classroom and academically under-achieving and/or under-performing is a low priority as compared to athletic performance. Hopefully our boys will get a better understanding and knowledge that what you do does directly affect the team and those that come behind you. Our freshmen (last season) had nothing to do with the others not going to class and now they have to pay for it. But as much as that disgusts me, I'd rather see my school do the right thing and not be able to compete rather than send that kind of message. The logical thing, like GR said, is to use that resource for improvement of APR.



At this moment, 60% of SWAC schools have been labeled ineligible by the NCAA for post season play in football mostly due to poor Academic Progress Rates. Most SWAC schools cannot meet the minimum requirements to remain eligible by the NCAA guidelines. Next year the minimum standards will increase eliminating more SWAC schools from being eligible for post season play.

It is rumored that the SWAC’s only plan to remedy this situation is to lower the bar and lift the self-imposed sanctions that stop SWAC schools from being eligible to participate in the SWAC football championship game if declared ineligible by the NCAA. If you think that’s far-fetched; last spring the SWAC asked the NCAA for special exemptions to allow several schools to play in the SWAC basketball tournament that had been declared ineligible by the NCAA. Thankfully, none of the four ineligible teams won the tournament.

What’s the use in being in Division I athletics if you are not going to adhere to and enforce academic guidelines and standards? The SWAC office has given up and waived the white flag on academics.

Again, the NCAA miscalculated our basketball scores and should have allowed dropped their penalty against us. Even after we showed them their error(s) and even after they acknowledged their mistake, they still refused to drop our ban.

But Get Ready is on point about the overall statement about Duer Sharp's leadership as commish.

Why is there no mention concerning the Presidents of the SWAC? He answers to them so Duer is not the only one at fault. Can't sugar coat the problem. Put everything on the line. Hope someone writes something to challenge the Presidents. Kendrick where you at?
 
I think it is time to pull out the gloves and let them go at it with Duer Sharp.

Simply put, Duer Sharp (and the Presidents who voted "yes") are putting finances before academics. We blame the bigger schools for doing this, then most of us turn around and do the same thing.
Duer wanted JSU and su in the SWAC title game in order to make Houston some money so what does he do? Instead of making a commissioner's decision, he put something that was ALREADY a SWAC stipulation, he put it to a vote.
If it was already on paper, there was no need to revisit the matter by putting it to a vote.
Again, he put money before academics. Now that's the height of hypocrisy.
All of you can laugh at the article, but GR is correct.
 
I am for raising the conference fee and no school be exempt under any conditions. Would it help to give the status of each school in the SWAC? The SWAC is Ten schools and no one person or school can demand anything. I strongly believe, if the Director of Alumni Affairs of all SWAC Schools were sent a status report of the SWAC many questions will be answered. The report should also include minutes of SWAC meeting for any interested alum to read. I can promise you one thing and that is you will be surprise of what you did not know.

I'm with you on this MD. In my previous life I was privy to some very interesting behind the scenes information that puts a lot of things in perspective.
 
Not sure what you all saw behind the scenes, but what has been seen in public view is sickening, and he should be held accountable. Bottomline is the conference isn't moving in the right direction. Presidents collaborate with the commish to accomplish certain goals, but they are paid to lead their institutions at the end of the day. The commish is paid to lead the conference. If the job isn't getting done, then he's gotta go.
 
I don't think the answer is moving down. I believe the answer is finding the money and accoutability infrastructure to solve the APR issue. Moving down to D-2 sounds like surrender to me. I also believe our athletic directors/administrations need to make better decisions with hiring head coaches (particularly football). When we hire inferior coaches, we get below par recruits and inferior execution on the gridiron. Only in this conference can one can find a 70 year old "hook up hire" of a man that has no head coaching experience. However, the SWAC has a few young energetic coaches on the horizon (making good money with no head coaching experience) and it will be interesting to find out how these experiments work out. One thing I agree with is, if you can't have your team prepared to compete with an average FCS program in 2-3 years with comparable facilities and budgets, your performance is below par and the coach should be fired. The athletic director should also be examined and considered for replacement because it is his hire as well as support system that has failed.

It appears you have studied leadership training just as many others, but you say "If the job isn't getting done, then he's gotta go." Please understand the Department of Athletics is not close to being in the top 3 priorities of any SWAC school. It might be to many alums, but not the Presidents. However, athletics is so important to the Alumni, the Presidents find a way to keep it for the alums. Every President or AD I have talk with will give you factual information.
