well sperm i would tell her to check "auto detect settings" and the other two boxes should be unchecked for LAN settings.

If you unable to ping then you may have a firewall issue on the computer. SO turn off all internet security and attempt to browse after you erm said if check the ip address your getting as well. note in windows vista you'll run ipconfig and get and ipv4 and ipv6 address. the ip address your looking for is the ipv4. also if your using vista if your not getting a valid ip address you machine me be in local only. there's a work around for it are you can upgrade to vista SP1.

I know our (AT&T) wireless cards all have ip address that start with 166.xxx.xxx.xxx im not sure about the DSL but i can call over to their dept and check. I work in the advance networks dept for AT&T mobility.
 
The fact that she was able to get on the internet with her laptop means the internet is working. PINGing means that you can or can not communicate with another computer on/off the network/internet. She should at least have an IP address once connected to the DSL network.

It doesn't sound like there is a wireless network setup, nor does it sound like there is even a network. From what I gather, her friend has a DSL modem that is connected directly to one machine via a CAT5 cable.
 



yeah so if another computer can connect and browse but the friends isnt able to ping she may have and issue with a firewall. also she can run the reset log command in command prompt to reset the tcp/ip configuration for vista its " netsh i i install" then restart the pc and it will probably work.
 
I shut down the firewall (Norton) and tried to ping yahoo and I couldn't. I also made sure widows firewall was disabled. I also shutdown the anti virus software and tried to ping yahoo and couldn't. I've scanned to PC for viruses and spyware. The DSL is connect directly to the PC with a ethernet cable. Sperm I will call once this darn storm passes and I can get over to her house.
