DSL Help

My friend has an ATT DSL (Seimens 4100) and for some strange reason we can't get the internet to connect.
She's called tech support and they cant seem to help. Can any of you techies come up with a reason the thing won't connect. All 3 lights(power, ethernet, internet) are solid green.
 
If all three lights are coming up green, then the DSL signal is inside the house. I have high speed cable, so I may not be of much help, but here I go.

First, DSL requires an userid/password, was that entered correctly?

Secondly, make sure that no proxy settings are set in the browser. On that tip, are you using a DSL supplied browser or a regular browser like IE or Firefox?

Last of all, I actually had to go buy a new phone cord because the cord I had didn't work.

Nope it's not a router. I took her PC and hooked it to my cable modem and can get to the internet using IE with no problem. The Phone company came out and check the line and said it works fine. So I am baffled as to what could be blocking the interent access.

Well, with cable, there is no login required, but with DSL, it is required. When I had DSL, I also had a router and I put my login info into my router so that I would never have to login using the DSL login screen/utility.

The only thing I see is you haven't mentioned anything about logging in. Do you have a username and password for the DSL account?

Those are pretty much the things that I would have thought to check...

Have you already called the help desk and ask them to walk you through troubleshooting?

There is a log in if you go thru AOL but if you bring up IE there is no log in required.

Yes the indian folks escalated us up to ATT tech support and they can't seem figure it out and want to charge $234 to come to the house to diagnose the problem.
 
I reread...

Has she ever been able to get online using that particular provider? She may simply need to power cycle the router [turn off, unplug everything, wait, turn back on] or [find the reset button and push it using a pin].

There should be a login NO MATTER what browser you use. IE will not bring up a login screen. With DSL, they sometimes have their own in-house login utility. You must login in with this utility FIRST, then you are free to use whatever browser you choose.

You can't just plug up DSL and start using the internet service without logging in.

Now question: Is the login thru AOL the login to use the DSL service, or is it the AOL login to use AOL (email, chat, etc.). Does it work when logging in with AOL?

It's yahoo dsl which is thru IE. Can't get to the log in screen because IE won't connect to the internet.

If you are using the Siemens 4100 - that is the modem. The pic I posted is the back of a Siemens Speedstream 4100.

Yes did the reset a couple of times. I also took my laptop over there and hooked it to the DSL and the internet would come up.
 
That's weird I just switched from Cable to DSL and has had no problem..just as fast as cable in my area. I don't need to logon or nothing. Mine is going through a wireless router that ATT supplied. We have four PC's running through the router.

I know what the problem is but right now I can't remember exactly how to fix it. We had a similar thing happen at the house with one of the computers. We had to go into one of the setting and tell it how to get to the internet. After that it was good to go.

Well, the problem is in here browser.

Do the following in IE.

Click on Tools/Internet Connections/Connections Tab/Lan Settings Button. Make sure everything is UNCHECKED.

Secondly, if running XP (which I don't know how you would do this with Vista), click on the Start Button/Run and type in these three letters 'cmd' and click OK. At the command prompt, type IPCONFIG or ipconfig. You should get back a list of numbers. This will let you know that this machine is connected to the internet.
