Dr. Jimmie James

Hmmm. I'm picturing the eighth floor of the tower. Wasn't Dr. Estus Smith on that floor? I know that isn't your dad. I remember him very well, though. I worked in the public information office with Melvin (can't think of his last name, maybe Miller) during my senior year.

I know Mitzi quite well. She's a couple of years behind me. I remember Billy K. His mom talked about him so much I couldn't help but know him.

I'm not sure if you and I ever paths crossed. You would have been much younger, though. I finished in 1982, and haven't been back too often since then.

Does the name Obra Hackett ring any bells with you? It should.

Of course it does. I didn't have any dealings with him, but I do remember seeing him in the building.

I met a lot of people during that time. Hilliard Lackey made sure if of that if you worked on his floor. Plus, his wife was the secretary of the mass communications department, so I had no choice.

Did you work in that building any other time? I minored in French; Barbara Dease was one of my primary instructors as well as adviser to my sorority. I'm wondering if I saw you in the building.

Course, if you were in the band, we would have marched together at least one year.

Nope. I only worked that summer after spending the spring as JSU's first co-op at the General Motor Information Systems and Communications Activity (GMISCA) in Warren,MI. I spent the summer learning French culture from Dr. Barabara and Madame Doujon, with occasional drop-ins from Hugette (sp?), pretty in her own right.

That was the summer that the Board of Regents started talking about moving programs around the state universities and raising admissions requirements. It was a tough, hot summer.

Madame Douyon was like a mother to me. Chantal and Hugette were my sisters, and I totally admired Liselle, the former Miss JSU. I spent many days at their home.

Okay .... getting this thread back on track ... did you ever attend church at Pearl Street AME? I think that was Dr. James' church. Someone from the music department went there because that's where most of the woodwind section members went.

Cocoa Love, I'm Obra Hackett, Jr. I practically grew up in the tower. And I spent many a day and night on the 6th floor, watching TV outside of Alumni Affairs...

Anyway..... Several JSU music faculty used to attend Pearl Street. Dr. James, Beray Thigpen (from Jim Hill), Dr. Johnny Anthony and a few others, if memory serves me correct.

I only attended Pearl Street AME once. Just not the place for me. I spent my freshman year at Amazing COGIC and the next 3 at Davis Temple COGIC. I enjoyed them all and learned an awful lot.

Dr. James took up the idea of the Tuba Ensemble. We put it together and toured the city quite a bit. Those were fun times as well.

I kinda figured you were his son. Small world.

Thanks for confirming that Dr. James attended Pearl Street. Some of my memories are a bit fuzzy from that period. We must have gone there because of Dr. Allen. It certainly wasn't because of Dr. James.
