Doug Williams to Michigan State, Comegy to GSU?

I heard some run last week on the college sports channels mentioning Doug Williams as a possible candidate for the Michigan State University job.

Would Doug leave the situation he has at Grambling after re-building the program and bringing it back to it's former glory? Let's say he does leave. Would GSU take a look at Rick Comegy? :confused Just some scenarios.

Interesting rumors. However I think Michigan State will go another direction. They may hire another African American coach , but I don't think Doug will be the one they go after. They really want Steve Mariucci of the 49ers but I doubt that will happen. It will be just like the Gruden thing with Notre Dame. No school can afford to wait on a NFL playoff bound coach. It messes with recruiting. There were some names thrown out there about MSU. Dennis Green name keeps coming up. He is proven on both levels. The black coach at San Jose State is being mentioned as well. So we will see what happens.

Doug still may get other interest from 1-A schools. I just don't think MSU alumni and boosters will support such a move. No offense to Doug and the great job he has done at GSU, but that will not be enough to impress those white folks at MSU. Count on that. Look for Doug to get interest from schools like a Baylor or even U of H. Actually if I was U of H I would persue Doug.

If Doug left GSU don't look for Comegy to be their first choice. GSU has too many alums that they can look at to fill the position. So I would be shocked if a non GSU man got the job if Doug left. Unless one of his staff members stayed and got the job, look for them to go after their own people. BTW didn't Comegy just sign a new deal with Tuskegee last year? I wonder does he have an out clause if he's offered a job at a 1-AA or 1A level. If he does, then he should lobby for the JSU job. That might be a good fit for JSU. They need to inquire about him. One thing he does know how to do is beat Alabama St. and LC Cole. Since one of the reasons Hughes got fired was his inability to beat Bama St., if I was JSU I would be calling Comegy right now to see what his contract status is. Just my opinion. Who knows if Pete leaves for Norfolk State as it has been rumored, SU needs to be dialing that number too. Should be interesting to see what transpires after the season ends for everybody.

.

All of that is just that, idle talk. MSU will either get another high profile D1A coach or someone from the pro ranks. They are just mentioning his name because he is black. We hear the same talk here in Houston about the UofH football coaching job with Doug. That may be a better stepping stone for him than any other. If he could go there and turn the program around, then he would be primed from a bigger program. I don't see him staying there at GSU forever like Eddie did so moving on some day will be a option he can't afford.

Exactly what I am thinking Fiyah. Must be a PSI thing.:D
MSU is not going to go after Doug for the reasons you just said. They were getting some heat on the way they treated Bobby Williams when they fired him. So they mention these black coaches that they may look at for damage control. They want Mariucci. He is a mid-westerner and he is best friends with MSU basketball coach. Sherman Lewis and Marvin Lewis names have also come up. I think one of them is a MSU alum. Or has some ties to them. But like you say it is all talk. Dennis Green might have a chance. He is supposed to have some contacts at MSU as well. So we will see.

Doug will have to take a job at a U of H type of school. A mid -major 1-A school. Then if he wins there then he will be a hot ticket item. Actually U of H should talk with him. They will never be able to get a high profile white coach anyway. So they will have to either hire a 1-A assistant or a 1-AA head coach. Doug, the coach at McNeese State, and maybe some other winning 1-AA coach would be a good choice. Look at the job Tressel has done at Ohio State coming in from Youngstown State. They took the chance and it worked. But he had been an assistant there, so that helped his cause. I didn't realize there were rumors about U of H looking at Doug. I was just tossing that out there. I think it would be a good fit for him and U of H. Doug could still recruit LA being so close and obviously he would be in Texas and have that at his disposal. Heck he recruited Hymes from Hitchcock outside of Houston.

This is going to be interesting watch. Doug has mentioned he has recieved some serious calls interested in him. We will see what transpires. It will not be MSU though.

I noticed he got Hymes out of Hitchcock, he was lucky. I doubt that'll happen again, lol. We're leaving no small town unturned.

LOL, you guys going to turn up the heat on Dorsey huh? Well I am sure Doug got lucky with Hymes. He was a great athlete and some schools probably passed on him because they didn't know what to do with him. However even though Hitchcock is small. They used to have a good team. I seem to remember that they just could never beat Sealy and that was always their downfall.

I feel ya on the no small town stone unturned. We(SU) need to do the same thing.

BTW,
I see Mike Singletary lobbying for the Baylor job. Is he living back in Houston? He even had Ditka call Baylor in his behalf. Don't sound like he's going to get that chance though. LOL

Points taken on MSU vs UofH

yeah,,, I can see what you are saying. never know though. they have a track record with black head coaches. They are not under as much pressure, say, as an SEC school socially nor fanatical football wise.

U of H would be a good fit I must admit. Not in the tuffest of conferences and with Doug Williams being a household name in the TX/LA region, recruiting should not be a problem for him at U of H. If he can get a few blue chippers in TX and pick off some of the best in LA, which should not be a problem, I would think that he could turn U of H around in about 3-4 years.

I think Comegy, on the other hand, probably has an out clause in his contract and I just don't see the guy being at Tuskegee for too much longer. My Skegee bretherin say differently, but I just don't have a warm fuzzy about him being at Skegee in 5 years. I see him easily going to an HBCU in the upper MEAC and remotely some school in the SWAC. He's done all he can do at Tuskegee except remain until he's old and washed up and have the stadium renamed Cleve Abbott-Rick Comegy Field/Alumni Bowl.

Interesting. I think Comegy is an excellent coach and he is probably ready to test the waters, but he is content at Tuskegee until the right job comes along. If I was JSU I would inquire especially since he seems to know how to beat ASU which has become a thorn in JSU's side and helped get Hughes fired. Plus he must can recruit and it's obvious he has to get players that have some grades to play at Tuskegee. I think he may just be waiting on the right deal before he would leave. BTW, how old is he? That may play a role on how soon he may leave. If he figures his window of opportunity is getting shorter then he may bolt. If not he may stay longer.

I don't think he's coaching, but I have read and heard on some sports shows that he is lobbying hard to get the job at his alma mater Baylor. The report was that he had Mike Ditka call Baylor to try to convince them that they should take a look at hiring him as the coach. The reason I asked was he living in Houston is because that is his hometown. I thought he might be still in Chicago.

But hey U of H could take a look at him too. Who knows how desperate they are. They need some name recognition to jump start their program. They tried and failed with hiring Clyde Drexler for basketball, but football is different. If you have good assistants you can make it. Who knows. But it is the Baylor job that he wants. It didn't sound like they were interested though.

that's right,,

forgot he was a Baylor alumn. could happen I guess,, especially with his NFL fame,,, but I just don't know; dem pwoods in TX are bout as ruthless when it comes to football, if not more so, than these folks in Alabama. Gonna be interesing to watch and see what happens.

I wonder, if he were in coaching, would Texas have hired Earl Cambell???? I tend to think not,, but I could be wrong.

You are right!! Those white folks in Texas are ruthless about football. LOL.

Baylor isn't going to hire him and as much as UT alums love the Tyler Rose(Earl Campbell) they would not hire him as coach either. Singeltary must want to coach all of the sudden. Well he better do like his cousin Vantz Singeltary who was on SU's staff and did internships with the NFL and now is an assistant on June Jones staff at the University of Hawaii. He has a better coaching resume than his famous cousin Mike. LOL. But hey he can't do no worse than the previous coaches at Baylor. They have been horrible.

Baylor

man,,, what a horrible team. I remember when Baylor used to be tuff. I just don't understand what happened to send them into the tank so hard and for so long. Yeah,,, Singletary needs some more grooming definitely. I don't think he walks into that job that easy.

Re: Baylor

Bartram,
I think their downfall happened after longtime coach Grant Teaff retired. Baylor was tough back in the 70's and 80's. I remember when they had Walter Abercrombie at RB. He went on to have a couple of decent seasons with the Steelers. Baylor also would have a tough defense. They used to recruit Houston really well too. Just like U of H went into the tank after Bill Yeomann retired. Then of course after the old SWC fell apart that kind of put the nail in the coffin for some of those programs. I am trying to remember if Baylor ever went on probation. I do know they have screwed over some highly recruited black Qbs that signed with them over the last 6-7 years. 2 come to mind that turned out to be busts at Baylor. Jermaine Alfred and Odell James were all world Qbs that went to Baylor and did nothing. James had injury and eligibility issues and Baylor just kept sinking. Then they have hired some bad coaches. What they need to do is maybe get a young hot shot coach who is an assistant at one of the bigger 1A schools. One that can recruit. Texas is on lock since Mack Brown arrived at UT. So much so that Texas A&M is a shell of it's former self. Slocum is on the hot seat too. He better not get embarrased by Texas tomorrow or there will be another high profile job opening.

I've heard several stations here in Houston mention Doug as a possible choice for the HC positon at U of H. That may not be that bad of a move for Doug. As previously mentioned, Conference USA is a good D1 conference but not top tier. I understand that Dana Dimel had a decent recruiting class and redshirted most of the class. So the cupboards are not necessarily empty at U of H. I thought that he would have had more time to turn that program around (putting in his offense and defense and getting his recruits into the system) but because of the AD turnover there, promises were made by one administration and not honored by the next. Bottom line is that the program is apparently not as bad as it seems on the surface.

Doug with his name recognition would be better at recruiting the Houston area than any coach they've had there since Bill Yeoman. He would definitely have a opportunity in getting the attendance up at the games but that would come with winning.

I don't think I would hire Doug as my next coach at U of H. Would you hire a coach who's made a living beating bad football programs like Texas Southern, Mississippi Valley, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Prairie View, Alabama State, and Alabama A&M?

As the head coach at Grambling, has Doug beat a good Jackson State, Southern or Alcorn team?

I could see hiring Doug if he's made a living beating the top Division 1-AA . To his credit, he has beaten some good 1-AA programs like Portland State and Florida A&M, but I can't recall their record at the end of the year.

If you remember, the coach at Ohio State use to dominate the 1-AA playoffs at Youngtowns State.

A little fuel for the fire about Comegy ... he is also the athletic director at Tuskegee.

IF he is waiting for just the right (coaching) position, would he also want to be in control of the athletic department as well?

Well I don't know about that. Remember he is at Tuskegee. So for them to justify paying him like they are, they made him the AD to keep him there. I am sure any coach will tell you it is hard to be both. If the right 1-AA school offered him the right money and a good contract then he would probably leave. Meaning a school like a JSU, Tn State, or other traditional 1-AA power HBCU's. He's in a good position to just sit back and wait. But I am sure that the higher paid SWAC coaches make more than Comegy and he has 2 jobs to do to their one. If not then he makes the same. But he still has 2 jobs. Look at Cole, Doug , and Pete. All make well into the 100K and none have AD duties.

I feel ya on that TSU Fan, but remember U of H aint Ohio State. Tressel would have never left Youngstown State for U of H. Hell his YSU teams probably could have beaten Houston. U of H would do well to try to go after Doug. Maybe the McNeese State coach would be interested as well. But U of H just don't have the juice to go out and get a big name 1A coach. SO regardless of who Doug has beat, the point is he has beat the teams on his schedule plus you have to look at his system and the way his teams are playing.

U of H will be hiring another Dana Dimel if they are not careful. Remember the Marshall coach had accepted the job before Dimel and then thought about it and then said on second thought he didn't want the job. That's how bad the white boys think of Houston's job. Plus it is going take a coach with some gonads to come into Texas to compete with Mack Brown to recruit some kids. I think Doug could get to some of the black kids to come to Houston. Only thing is I don't know if Doug would feel guilty about leaving GSU only to turn around to come back into LA to recruit against them. But who knows what will happen. I just thought the U of H job would be a good fit for Doug or a black coach. U of H will probably do the obvious and go hire another unproven white boy and continue to get their azz kicked in Conference USA.

I think Doug would be a great fit for U.H. It has been my contention for a long time, the only thing that could bring UH back is an African American Coach. If you recall, In it Hey Day UH had a lot of African Americans playing when other PWC didn't. UH has the same problems as HBCU's they can not compete from a financial stand point with the larger State schools. They need an equalizer. Just like African American players did in the late sixties early 70's and African American coach can do it in the 2000's. Another factor in UH past glory is the effect Coach Elmer Redd had on this program. He could go in any African American home in East Texas and sign the kid. He had that kind of Juice. He was African American.

GSU played Louisville which is Conference USA like U of Houston. GSU did o.k. during the first part of the game, then mistakes and depth got to them.

I said that to say that I believe that Doug can be successful and competitive in C-USA. Doug's strong suit (IMO) is him having played QB and knowing how to develop kids at the position. He could be able to recruit talent in Texas and La. and field competitive teams. Conference USA is not that strong in football (U of Cincy is also in the league); there are only a few good teams (I grant them that their facilities are excellent). If Doug can get some players (and given his ability to develop QB's he should get some good prospects there) and a few good coaches he should do fine in C-USA.

Regards.

I agree. Good points East Tex Tiger. I remember those U of H teams back in the day when they went to the Cotton Bowl with black Qbs like a Danny Davis.

Yes, good points.

C-USA does sound like a good fit for Doug not only from a competitive standpoint but from a geographical standpoint too. His recruiting base and the teams (UAB, USM, Tulane, Cincy, Louisville, TCU, maybe Troy State,, etc) would all be basically in the region where he recruits now.

I wonder what Doug thinks about all of this? What kind of contract does he have with GSU and is he at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of it?
