Do HBCU know how to recruit and market high profile athletes?

I had a cousin receive a SWAC offer recently and the kid talked about it on Twitter....lo and behold the coach comes behind him to congratulate him but then says keep working harder so you can get more....

I have seen this too many times with my own eyes when a kid gets an offer from Valley. They are happy to get a D1 offer (some of the cats have even posted emails, etc.) junior and the coach tells them exactly what you said.

Ppl don't even wear HBCU gear on sitcoms anymore..I was watching an old show of Martin and Gina had a GSU sweatshirt on and on another show Martin had a Howard shirt on....we can't even get nothing represented by us to be shown...I'm just saying big brother...

Between the funding given for academic purposes, money received from the NCAA basketball tournament, and other grants, we receive quite a bit of money from direct membership. This doesn't count money we get from playing payout games that would vanish without NCAA membership.

I agree that we did get lazy and we've fallen way behind as a result. As far as what's needed now compared to 1999, there are several factors at play. As I said earlier, attendance is down, giving us less revenue. That being said, the landscape of college athletics has changed since 1999, making comparisons difficult. This isn't simply an HBCU issue, pretty much all non-P5 schools would struggle budget wise without money games.

NBC is rolling out a couple of Black sitcoms this fall. One with Craig Robinson that looks promising. But Blacks on PrimeTime TV is a different discussion. Most black tv has been moved to reality TV, unfortunately.

I saw the previews for that. He want that TV money I see and can still do movies. I am not surprised by Black-ish but Empire you would have never told me it would be THE show on Fox and arguably on all of TV. Thought Taraji was doing bad after her departure from Person of Interest but she bounced back nicely.

I don't watch reality TV at all. Even the two that were featured in Mississippi (that Dancing Dolls show seems to be popular and no word on if Breaking Greenville will get a season 2). And those are the positive shows.... don't get me started on those LHH shows

Man, I can't go anywhere here without someone under 40 asking me about "DD4L" when I tell them I'm from Jackson. I know Diana pretty well and even back in 2005, all she talked about was her 'girls'. Even took a second job an Northpark Mall to help pay for competition expenses and etc. She deserves everything positive that she's getting from that show. So I tune in with The Mrs. from time to time and watch.

Breaking Greenville just wasn't that interesting to me.
 
I agree with most of what was in the article, but the thing that gets me is that he didn't do for his son what his uncle did for him.

Why should he, SolMan? He's not a paid recruiter for Howard University lol. I'm sure Howard had compensated recruiters who ineptly didn't do their due diligence to recruit top-tier athletic and academic talent for the football playing field. I'm almost 100% certain.

If he's as concerned as he stated, is reason number one; he's asking alumni to do exactly what he didn't do.

Or is he placing the onus of accountability where it belongs, on the PAID staff @ HBCUs w/ their lazily lack of effort to recruit the best? lol C'mon man. lol

That mentality is the main problem with HBCUs now. Does your HBCU alma mater have to pay you to advertise, promote, recruit for them now? Do you see T. Boone Pickens saying, "it's not my job to promote the university"? Do you see high school guidance councilors asking for kick-backs for steering students to their alma maters? Hell, do you not see car salesmen GIVING AWAY Chevy Escalades to star athletes to entice them to choose Big State Univ.? These PWI alumni and fans don't have this problem. It's enough of them with the service attitude to negate the "why should I" folks. I'm not saying go break NCAA violations, but your university depends on you to help in recruiting. I say why are you NOT recruiting for your school? Are you ashamed of your degree? Why does your alma mater have to pay you promote the university?

No wonder we're behind. I think I found the answer. We can close the thread now.

there's a reason the high profile guys were recipients of "gifts" dating back to integration...hbcu's had a stronghold on those guys but the gifts got to large to waste time competing with and its still to this day

the kid we need to focus on is that kid who has one or 2 Sun Belt low level last place offers but that says FBS at the end of the day...the New Mexico States, ULMs, etc. dont move any football needles will hurt you at the last minute with a FBS dream when in reality you do better at a SWAC school with more excitement and in some cases, better facilities

I still dont think it hurts to send a 4 or 5 star kid a letter or hype video or something. We dont even send a letter to these kids who are in our front yard. You dont have to recruit them hard but just letting them know You notice them goes a long way. Kids want that attention.

I agree 1000%, STC.

But, you have people, w/ the pre-integration lol mindset like SoloMan and Mr SWAC who think *quote* " your HBCU alma mater should not have to pay you to advertise, promote, recruit for them" *unqote*. So, in that regard, it is YOU who should create a hype video/university collateral and then send kids a hype video, OFFICIAL state university collateral, and actually force your physical presence upon them, w/out knowledge of ncaa recruiting rules/violations/contact periods/et al :D :D :D :D: :D :D :D :D :D. I can almost envision people like them physically chasing kids down while they're in school seeking to speak to them during a non-recruiting period and god forbid, but HS staff noting and documenting the illegal act and reporting them to the ncaa. I do not speak from a remedial and ridiculous urban legend standpoint, I'm speaking fact. Try that and watch what happens. I'll be lmmfao@u, like this--> :D .

The bolded compliments your entire post. UCF has enough alums (think their enrollment is over 60K now. Largest school in FL) that they can have folks with that mentality. Even the larger HBCUs like FAMU, PV and JSU (with the enrollments around 10K or more) can't do that with an average of 90% of our alums not giving back anything.
