Do HBCU know how to recruit and market high profile athletes?

No, but what reason would a coach have for saying that? Under what circumstances would he say that? On signing day he's going to address the players that actually CHOSE his program and signed. No coach goes up there and addresses the players he didn't get. I may not be understanding the question, here.

Now, what can HBCUs do better that would have a direct effect on all the money factors I listed above? Increase enrollment. I feel the majority of HBCUs don't try to continuously GROW, but only sustain. That's how deterioration sets in. We actually think we can be this juggernaut of athletics within D1 when most HBCUs are at <5,000 student enrollment. That's where a lot of the daily budgetary struggle comes from. We're competing against PWIs that have decent-to-great alumni backing, always looking to expand, community support, and enrollments of 10-50K. Do you know what you could do with that extra tuition money alone???

I've always said that AAMU should be at a minimum of 8K enrollment. We could reach our full potential on this level with that. I'm a true believer of your enrollment has a direct correlation on what athletic classification level you should be at. Truth be told, some HBCUs should drop down to D2, which better suits their size financially and competition.

I don't think it's a stretch to ask Tim to respond to your questions but I don't undertand why you'd inquire specificially about his current (perhaps) action(s) vs what his blog indicated and primarily noted as problematic w/ regards to HBCU recruiting that basically allowed an HBCU to have yet another academically and athletically talented individual to fall in its lap lol. ::confused smiley:: I'm most certain, w/out even knowing Tim but knowing the higher-quality academians that are prevailent on Howard's campus, that his $$ and support were (at some point) w/ Howard and their then highly :D mentally inept "staffers." lolololololololol

You make excellent points w/ regards to enrollment #s that txlates to communal/frd/alum support. However, when I look @ the purple/gold 8K enrollment example that is my undergrad, I'm slightly perplexed @ times as I witness a few things that are questionable w/ regards to athletics. Especially when I can travel LITERALLY 53 miles away to Sam Houston State University's campus and view athletic excellence and dominance/competitivity there as they continue to recruit and build for betterdom.

mh, you do realize there are staffers THERE, right now this very second, whose POSITION requires them to "help make the school better," right? Those are PAID positions. We as alums should front our financial $$$ to support and that's where it ends, imho. It's THEIR job and position to do their work diligently. That's what they are being paid to do, correct? lol Are you a compensated recruiter? lol Why are you recruiting for your school when there are paid staffers there whose responsibility is to recruit? lol Did you not read what Tim stated about himself AND his son's lack of recruitment by HBCUs?

I think a lot of us expect and demand better w/ the BEST, especially after being exposed to better @ other campuses. To those who haven't been exposed to better w/out the use of a televesion or hearsay coupled w/ insipid urban lol legend, has to suck to be you as you continue to exist in that little isolated box you call your world.

There are plenty of opportunities for a coach to make that known. Coaches speak with booster groups and alumni chapters all the time.
 
I been said with the talent we now are getting in this conference, we should be a bit further than where we are now....we gotta stop playing these pay-out games for starters and form our own Black Power league and go from there...We don't need the NCAA or whoever...I understand contracts etc or in place, but we have to break away some way some how in order for us to get a back-bone in this game...this shat is digusting and only will get worse....

Well then it is up to you, as an alumnus, to ask your coach about who they have recruited. Again: if said athlete has not signed, the coach can't comment on him/ her....at least he's not allowed to. I'm sure if you ask a coach about a particular player they are/ were recruiting, he'd have no problem telling you. I can recall, through info gathered in private conversations, several recruits that JSU offered who were highly coveted. From Hughes' staff all the way up to now.

For example, JSU offered a scholarship to Trey Smith (yep, Jimmy Smith's son) last year who eventually signed with Louisville....info like that doesn't take much to acquire. I do agree that Alumni/ booster meetings would be the perfect opportunity, but don't expect a coach to voluntarily broadcast that kind of information. That's probably the last thing on his mind when he's in a room where over half the people there want him fired. LOL

That all sounds good in principle, but where will funding come from? Our alums don't donate, and attendance has been trending downward for some time. Outside of football, our teams mostly play home games in empty arenas. Most of our athletic programs couldn't survive without payout games in football and basketball, and even with them, we're by and large barely scraping by as it is.

At some point, HBCUs have to ask themselves "what are THEY offering these kids that draw the kids to them and not us"...then find a way to offer it. Whether it be facilities, or whatever.

You can't convince me SU isn't a better option than ULL or Charlotte. Smh.

UCF has an amazing program, an amazing campus and amazing facilities. I can't speak for ULL or Charlotte, but I live 5 minutes from UCF's main campus.....Second-largest enrollment in the nation behind Arizona State. Their only problem is that they're in a poor conference, but they were smart enough to jump ship from CUSA. Any student-athlete in his/ her right mind would choose UCF over a SWAC school. And you all would, too.

All 3 are or will be FBS schools. That weighs in the equation for some kids.
 
I think to many high School Coaches are to involved in these kids recruitment. Look at the Johnathan Taylor situation after he was let go from Bama his high school coach said any college coach had to come through him to talk to Johnathan so I guess the parents of most (Black Athletes) have no say so in what school they should attend.

Ok help me get this right..

Funding comes from the NCAA to fund what exactly at ALL of these campuses?? As described in the article apparently the 'funding' from the NCAA didn't fix up the football area at Howard...so what exactly is the funding helping within our departments?

How much funding does one institution gets? should every institution get the same amount of funding?


The payout games and checks we receive now, what exactly does those funds go towards?

I went and did a camp at LSU and I was just watching all the black folks..students/helpers and all..just walking around with their LSU gear..just having this feeling like I"m better than those who don't attend this school LOL..and I'm just smh wanting to tell them brother man..you do know if you don't make it in the NFL, you'll be picking up my trash, or be putting mail in my mailbox...sister girl, you do know you'll be working as a clerk 2 or in some call center once you cross the stage here...Like why even go to that trashy ass school...that's like me going home where I know I'm not wanted there and but I wanna go..so I can feel accepted and entitled...shat makes me sick to my stomach..dayum I wish we had a Marcus Garvey or Malcolm X here in these times...too many coons

Nah he was just mad at how Saban did the kid dirty. The kids or parents probably asked the coach to help in that situation.
 
I know for certain High School coaches have a hand in this equation, especially the white ones...They would set and tell the HBCU coaches..nah these kids are being recruited by such and such but over here is a such and such kid you can recruit..I"ve heard the stories how they use to do Doug when he would try and recruit certain kids down here...And I know if they are doing it to him, they are doing to others...
Why you don't see too many white OL going to your HBCUs
This shat is crazy...it's time for blacks/brown ppl to wake the hell up

Man honestly we've been singing this same tune since 99, we survived back then? and didn't need (them payout games) what's the change now?

Ppl got lazy and didn't push forward when we had the chance too..I remember Master P or somebody wanted to do a SWAC network and that was shut down...but now since we've been pushed to the bottom...it's look bad, but again we can't continue to rely on the NCAA or whoever we getting aid from to get us back on top because that's not going to happen..I'd rather us break away and struggle (which will make us come up with ideas and do our jobs) than to be like this in this condition...
Ppl don't even wear HBCU gear on sitcoms anymore..I was watching an old show of Martin and Gina had a GSU sweatshirt on and on another show Martin had a Howard shirt on....we can't even get nothing represented by us to be shown...I'm just saying big brother...

The NCAA provides funds but mostly for academic enhancement. Other funds are conference distributions from the basketball tournament and the NCAA revenue sharing that we all get annually (funneled through the conference).

How many Black sitcoms are there now? I can name one.
 
high school coaches have a huge impact as they are at the camps with the kids now..as a coach you gotta be on your A-Game as these guys can kill you overnight as parents will trust them in most cases than themselves when it comes to football

I had a cousin receive a SWAC offer recently and the kid talked about it on Twitter....lo and behold the coach comes behind him to congratulate him but then says keep working harder so you can get more....
