Do Denominational Rules Conflict With The WORD?

What are "Sunday clothes"?

Since they were non-existant in the bible, when were they incorporated and by whom?

They existed, but they were not called Sunday clothes, especially since most celebrations climaxed on the sabbath or Saturday. It is OT-based. Certainly the dedication of the temple as built by Solomon carried all types of pageantry. Still further back with the establishment of the tabernacle there was command given to the congregation for consecration. This involved not only bathing and ceremonial cleansing but the concept of bringing the best that one has before the Lord in worship. There were dedicated garments to be worn by the priests and Levites (those ministered to the congregation and before the Lord) on these occasions.

It is likely that the concept grew from there.

Hmmm. Something to think about...

If you come to church with us, you can wear what you want. Just so you have on clothes. :)

My folks taught us the importance of wearing your Sunday clothings. We had Sunday Shoes and Sunday clothings. You were not allowed to wear your Sunday clothing to school, unless it was picture taking day. In fact people enjoyed going to church because they could dress up on Sunday.

When I entered AAMU, it was mandatory that we dressed up on Sunday for the Dinner meal. My sisters who attended AAMU told my Mother that they were glad when Sunday came so I could dress up. They did not like what I wore during the week. Sunday, a few year ago was a day of rest. Our society has changed and very few people respect Sunday as a day of worship.

I don't know about anywhere else but I belive it went down when the Blue Laws went into effect. When a person could go to the Grocery Stores or Shopping Mall and go to Foley's all on Sunday where as before this could not be done by Law.

I feel led to say this,
if you feel your best includes Stacy Adams, then where it. If your best for God involves Polo or other nice clothes, than for you it is okay. If you feel better going to church "dressed up" than in "casual clothes" than God will honor that, for you.

Likeise
For those of us who don't usually "dress up" and don't feel that is important than I believe that God honors that also.

I can't believe we were debating what to wear to Church when the important thing is that we're all going to church, period. I want to encourage all of you Christians and commend for the work you're doing for Jesus regardless of your attire. Let's just try our best to stay IN God's Will and IN the right church and God will deal with us individually with what we wear.

I love you guys!:)

p.s. I think this is what Ms.Jag4Jag said earlier, in a different way.

Being, in the ministry - I try to encourage sisters not to wear dresses / paints that are to tight or short. On the other hand I tell the men have the same problem "wearing tight paints"

Ms. jag, you are right - a church should not have a "dress patrol".

MD: I respect that. My grandma would have fits if
she saw me stroll in with my tennis shoes, jeans, and t-shirt.
:)

I think the Leaders of the flock set the tone. My pastor, wears
dockers and a pullover Polo-type shirt. He only dresses up if he
has to. He HATES suits. He will dress for some Holidays and if he has to go on television. He'll also dress up if he has to take pictures. He has taught us to focus on the Word, not the vessel from whence the WORD comes forth. It works. He often compliments people in the congregation if they are dressed up especially women with hats on.

Our lady minister dresses up. One of our associates usually wears slacks and a button up shirt. I don't know if I ever saw him in a suit with Jack and all.

He usually shouts when a boy with dreadlocks, baggy pants
and earrings joins the church. He once told us that the WORD was for everybody no matter what you wear...He'd point that person out as a "Come as YOU are" type of person. He'd high-five them right there at the alter! :)

He is not being fair by dressing when he has to. Grandma and my parents would have a fit about this.

Wear those Sunday Clothing to Chursh. We were not brought up that way. Let's get the devil out of this and dress up.

H, said he try to encourage, just say it and it will be done.

MD,

I am going to say this again, it doesn't matter about our attire. If you are clean on the outside as well as in the inside, that is all that matters. God knows our hearts and it is not important to him the type of clothes we wear to church. The Church should be about bringing souls to Christ not about what we wear.

JSU II:

If I ever start preaching, I would turn you around at the door if you did not have on your Sunday cloths.

Reason: If you look good, you feel good, and you can study the word better.

The church is our last institution and we cannot allow folks to come to chruch using the rationale that God don't care how we look. Since God did not tell us this then we as a people should maintain these standards of dressing up and looking good when attending church. You look good at church :D

MD,

I look and feel good in whatever I wear to church, (only kidding) but seriously, I still stand by what I said earlier. GOD doesn't care about what we wear to Church. I am glad you are not preaching.

JSUII,
Lets expand this some. If God doesn't care about dress, How do you thinnk he feels about giving?

:)

Mightydog, you're intentions are good, but c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y unbiblical and extremely religious.

I've read a lot of your post on this subject and you seem to take the word of your mother / grandmother / traditions over what's in the bible. Can you name me one instance where Jesus changed clothing before He went to the temple or implied that someone else should? Even if there was an example of someone doing that in the bible it would have been those dang Pharisees! They held on to religion sooooooo tight that they let it replace God!

I love my momma just as much as you love yours but sometimes we both have to except the fact that on some issues, MOMMA WAS WRONG.
I don't want to sound too critical but we've been needing someone to tell us this for years! The truth on this issue will set a lot people free because they won't feel like they have to look a certain to way to come to church.

True, a lot of things existed in the old testament, but are not in effect today. Based of the OT, some people still don't eat certain meats, and some people still only worship on Saturdays, and some people still use priests to talk to God, and some people even still sacrifice animals! Etc.

We have been set free from the 100's of rules and regulations of the OT. There's a place in the bible where God said, "I hate your traditions" talking about people who taught and practiced certain things (in the name of God) that had nothing to do with God. After reading the life of Jesus, who thinks that Jesus had any concerned about someone attire? Did Jesus want the people who to listen to Him on the beach to come with their expensive clothes on? Did Jesus EVER change clothes Himself before "church" at the temple? What scriptures even remotely imply this?

I'll leave you with this:
ANY people who come to your church dressed in jeans, a t-shirt, cap, or whatever and are not "received" by the congregation simply because of their attire, SEND THEM TO LAKEWOOD CHURCH!!! We'd looooooooooooooooooove to have them there!

From South Houston: Take 610 East, it becomes 610 North, Exit North Wayside and make right at 1st light, make right on Dockal St., church will be 1 mile down on right.
From North Houston: Take 610 South, exit North Wayside and take a left at the 1st light, take a right on Dockal St., church will be 1 mile down on right.

I think I'll say that again.:)

docmump,

God only ask for a tenth of our salary. I do think giving of ourselves is something that we all should do whether it be money or some other form of giving back.

nevaehinvesting,

MD, knows that our Pastor doesn't condone what he is stating. Our church is striving to become one of the most loving churches in the world. "The Church That Seeks to Glorify God and Edify Humanity"

JSU II, when this subject came up in our church, our Pastor said he did not have anything against folks wearing what they wanted to but for himself he was going to continue to dress the same way. Suit and Tie.

The pastor wear his Sunday clothes and we should follow his lead.

Now JSUII, why do you wear Sunday Clothes to Church?

Jesus did not come to condemn the law, but to fulfill it. As such, we were set free from useless traditions and free to useful ones. Certainly God does not want us bound by tradition; and He also wants us to understand and explore the rudiments of OT exposition so we better understand how to express our NT freedoms.

Jesus was certainly concerned about his own attire. He would not have been permitted to read from Isaiah about himself had he not been rabinnically attired. The Pharisees would not have acknowledged him as a teacher had he not be dressed for the role. Is that in the Bible?

No, it is in Jewish law. Read the works of noted first century historian Flavius Josephus for yourself. Had Jesus not been rabbinically attired, they could have had Him arrested from the beginning but they had nothing on Him. His role was to minister and he dressed the part in order that he would be recognized as such and free to operate.

No, Jesus does not care what congregants wear. I don't think that he really cares that much what ministers wear as long as it is properly covering us. But, he clearly demonstrated his respect for the tradition of dress by observing it where it was appropriate.

MD,

I agree that our Pastor wear a suit and tie along with his robe to Church, but I choose to wear what I want. I don't want to follow lead with Pastor every Sunday. I dress the way I dress because I want to. I don't condemn others for what they choose to wear. You stated it very clearly that Pastor has chosen to wear what he wants to Church but he doesn't tell us what to wear. Pastor is there to win souls for Christ not to critique what some of us choose to wear every Sunday, or Wednesday night to Church.

JSU II, you have never been seen at church with blue jeans on. :) However, when the subject came up about dress, he stated that you can wear what you want to but this is what I am going to wear.

The discussion on dress did not phase me, because I am always going to wear my Sunday cloths, just like my Pastor.

and Bible study is held on Wednesday Night.

BTW, I hope they are not the ones I saw you wearing at the softball game. :D
