Did Ty Get a Fair Shot at Notre Dame?

well i'm sure by now everybody knows Willingham got blown out at Dame. did he get a fair deal at Notre Dame or should they have let him coach out this year and at least next year before whacking him?

didn't Bob Davie get blown out after only 3 years also?
Bob Davie got his full 5 years. But he didn't have Urban Meyer lurking out there when he was coaching.

Notre Dame's cover blown

By Pat Forde
ESPN.com

Notre Dame, football factory, fired its coach Tuesday.

The athletic director stressed that the football coach has done wonderful, inspirational work off the field. The academic performance has never been better, he said. The coach is a man of unassailable character who has recruited players of similar ilk.

"In a lot of ways," the athletic director said, "this program hasn't been this healthy in a long time."

Firing Ty Willingham exposed Notre Dame as nothing more than a football factory.

Except for one way. The wins-and-losses way. Which is what truly matters at all football factories.

Tyrone Willingham committed the fireable offense of going 21-15 in three years. As AD Kevin White said, Willingham did great work Monday through Friday.

"We just were not meeting those competitive expectations on Saturday," White said.

Athletic directors, presidents and alums everywhere want the big lie: they want Harvard during the week and Oklahoma on the weekends. Clearly, the Fighting Irish weren't getting enough Boomer Sooner when needed.

This move makes one thing clear: the Golden Dome might as well be located in Auburn, Ala., or Lincoln, Neb., or Tallahassee, Fla. All the things Notre Dame used to hold dear -- the class-and-dignity stuff, the special-institution stuff -- is officially of secondary importance.

But here comes the reality check for the Domers. Now that you've licked Willingham's blood from your claws and outed yourselves as a football factory, can you win like one?

oh, ok. what was willingham's contract? 5 years also?

Wasn't there a coach (Nebraska?) who was fired after qualfying for a bowl or at least after having a more impressive record? College booster are very fickle nowadays. Ten years ago I would say no he didn't get a fair shot, but I-A today is about Bowls.

Does this leave 2 coaches left in I-A?

Yep, Dorrell at UCLA and Croom at Mississippi State, although Ty is speculated to be a top candidate for the U of Washington job.

The guy after Osborn was blown out after a 9-2 season I believe. (9-2, 8-3 or somthing in that area)

I think Tyrone got a raw deal at Notre Dame. Did the alums at Notre Dame really expect Tyrone Willingham to have ND back in a BCS Bowl in only three years? Coach Willingham had two winning seasons out of three years at ND. I hope the next coach at ND is judged by the same standards they judged Tyrone with.

Frank Solich was the coach in question at Nebraska. He averaged 9 wins per season and was fired after three season because the AD didn't see great things for the program.

His replacement only won 5 games and gave those folks there just deserve. Nebraska has its first losing season since '61

They talk about him doing a great job Monday thru Friday and not getting it done on gameday? Did they really expect undermanned teams to be able to compete game in and game out? They weren't going to win because they were wearing the Blue and Gold; they were going to win because of who's wearing it. Bottom line: Notre Dame has not given Willingham the opportunity to recruit EVERYBODY. The admission standards have not changed at Notre Dame much to the chagrin of Alumni like Paul Horning and others. Notre Dame is recruiting a much smaller pool of players because of their admission standards and a coaching change won't fix that. Does anyone really think that Urban Meyer is a better coach than Ty Willingham? And no one is going to convince me that he would carry greater appeal when recruiting the best athletes in the land, even though those guys probably couldn't get into Notre Dame anyway. A few years back Florida State RB Lorenzo Booker came this close to picking Notre Dame over FSU, just because Willingham got the job at ND. I don't think that Urban Meyer would have had the same effect.

If you got Miami, Florida State, LSU, and Texas at your front door and they are willing to make an exception even though your grades and scores might be a little less than the norm for admissions, who the hell needs Notre Dame. They just don't get it; he got a RAW DEAL!

I hope he get's consideration for the Florida job also, because Willingham with unlimited resources wouldn't be nothin nice. :smash:

Did he get a raw deal? Yes, comparing it to other coaches who were allowed to stay on.

But was his firing unexpected? No. Notre Dame Alums are just like everybody else's; they want to win now, and as far as they were concerned the program has not shown enough improvement under Willingham. They expected more out of him given the job he did at Stanford. They thought he would have them back in the upper echolon in no time.

Notre Dame does not get the players it use to get so its going to be difficult for anyone who coaches there. The proof in the pudding will be determined by how patience they are with the next coach. If he gets a five or six year contract and is out in three because of similar performance as Willinngham, then that will tell you all you need to know to determine what they value in their football program.

Regards.

He got a raw deal. The column that I posted and Dr. Mac's last post states the Notre Dame situation best.

He almost lost his job last year, but they ended up with a decent season. The pressure was really on this year and he did not give ND what they wanted.

I attended a ND home game (Navy) last season (got to see touchdown Jesus) and I can tell you that they wanted his head.

His contract was for 6 years.

Wrong.......

He had a 5 year contract just like Davie and Faust had, he was not allowed to fullfill his contract like those two were.

Too bad Richard Lapchick report on miority hiring didn't come out next month. Who are the top minority candidates who should be interviewed for these I-A jobs?

I told you that Ty shouldn't have taken the job. I told you that he would be run out of town at the beginning of this season.

Here are the facts: Davie after 3 years (21-14). Ty after 3 years (21-15).

Of course he didn't get a fair shake.

I bet this guy will be the new coach @ Notre Dame.

One coach certain to be mentioned as a possible replacement for Willingham is Utah's Urban Meyer, a Notre Dame assistant from 1996-2000. The Utes are 11-0 and ranked No. 5 in their second year under Meyer, who has a clause in his current deal that allows him to leave for Notre Dame without a buyout.

He is also working under a different administation than the previous people. Ty got the job because he was successful at Stanford, a school that also has high academic standards. But Standford doesn't face the competition that Notre Dame does. Notre Dame will not change their academic standards (which they shouldn't) nor will they change their schedule, so who ever takes over has their work cut out for them.

They are missing players like the Jerome Bettis, Rocket Ismials that they had before.
