ORANGEBURG TOUCHDOWN CLUB: Former SCSU coach Dennis Thomas returns as MEAC commissioner
By TRAVIS BOLAND, T&D Sports Writer
The Orangeburg Touchdown Club welcomed a familiar face when former South Carolina State football coach and current MEAC Commissioner, Dennis Thomas, spoke to the group last Thursday.
Dr. Thomas talked with fans about his three years as SCSU head coach, saying he was happy to have been welcomed back to Orangeburg.
"The MEAC is a tremendous conference," said Thomas. "It is filled with a number of wonderful institutions including South Carolina State, and I am proud to be the commissioner of this conference."
Thomas added that the Bulldogs (then 6-2 on the season) were still in the hunt for the MEAC title, if they could run the table, and if the Hampton Pirates slip up late in the season.
"Anybody can beat anybody on any given Saturday," said Thomas of the parity both in college football in general and the MEAC. "Every week the game means something."
He went on to talk about a number of teams in the MEAC that rank high in attendance year in and year out.
He said that the Bulldogs are one of four teams ranked in the upper echelon of the 122 member teams in Division I-AA.
Thomas went on to discuss the history of South Carolina State and the number of players that have come out of the program and gone on to play professional football.
He also mentioned an initiative that he hopes to someday oversee as MEAC commissioner. Thomas wants to see the addition of two more football-member institutions into the MEAC, giving the conference ten gridiron teams overall.
These ten teams would then split into two divisions and play a championship game in December in a "warm-weather city."
Due to strength of schedule, victories already achieved and those they hopefully gained over the next few weeks, Thomas said SCSU could be a Division 1-AA play-off team in 2004.
