Debbie Allen Wants To Reboot 'A Different World'

Different-World-Cast-1.jpg

If the below tweets she posted to her Twitter followers are any indication...

1. Hey Guys. Go get the new @EBONYMag we talk about A Different World 25 years later it's the one with @AKILPRODUCTIONS SPARKLE on the cover

2. @EBONYMag article about Different World made me really want to get back in the saddle with a that show...

3. We need to revisit this wonder arena and get my crew back. Whitley, Dwayne, Ron, Kim, Jaleesa, Mr. Gaines, Freddie.

4. We need to recap this ground breaking series that is so missed in TV today..can I get an AMEN #adifferentworld

5. I get enough amen’s maybe @BillCosby , Marcy, and Tom will let us put hillman back on the block.... #adifferentworld

My first question is, if everyone comes back, would they play themselves? And if so, given that they are all 2 decades older, surely they won't all still be students at Hillman College. Maybe they'll be professors now, and there'll be a whole new cast of young'uns to play the students.

I'm just guessing... I know nothing.

She tagged Bill Cosby in that last tweet; I checked his Twitter timeline and didn't see a reply... at least, non yet. He hasn't been on Twitter much lately.

Although I'd think she'd have his direct phone line.

So... a Different World reboot... I think this is all wishful thinking on Debbie Allen's part, but, ya never know! And now that you know she's interested in the idea, don't be too shocked if we announce eventually that it's actually happening.

But what do you folks think about the idea?

Even though I loved the show when it aired in the 80's and 90's, but would it be successful, since most kids of today care less of the HBCU experience.

I would like to see a show either a reality or sitcom which would be similar to a Different World. However, I would like to see some new blood. It would be good to see some of the original characters from a Different World to come back maybe as a professor or visiting professor.

agree. surely there is enough imagination to try a new sitcom versus revamping an old one.

I agree BUT a lot of people say that A Different World inspired them to go to college. Just like Drum Line and and that show about the frats and sororities (as unrealistic as they both were) also inspired some people, we need some inspiration for these kids of today. They all want to be rappers. :smh: I have a cousin who is spoiled and soft as a marshmallow who has sat out two years from college to be a rapper. It's sad.

I feel the same way about professions they show on TV. Its like they only show successful people as doctors or lawyers. Yet, they wonder why African Americans don't want to major in sciences.

I think it's a great idea!! Have some of the old actors working on campus...kind of tie in the "new" with the "old" while giving a storyline explaining what happened to the old actors after the show went off and tieing it in with the new storyline.

It could work...if they keep it as a comedy. There aren't any real black comedies on TV. Just don't bring any of those Nickolodian (sp) actors over.

Who knew Jasmin Guy or Kadeem Hardison before "A Different World"?! Have to start somewhere. Us old heads would surely watch. :emlaugh:

I justed watched "School Daze" yesterday with all the "A Different World" actors in it: Jasmin Guy, Kadeem, DeWayne Bell (Ron), "Julian" (Whitley's boyfriend). I actually just noticed Julian was online pledging with Spike Lee yesterday...I had never noticed that before. :emlaugh:

I agree. Have a few of the OG actors as professors or some role in the new series to show the new blood that they can do it as well (graduate and become a professor or some other successful professional).

I could also see them like having one of the OG characters having a kid and on the series...

Have it where it is focusing on TODAY'S issues with HBCU's....

Dwayne was already a professor at Hillman College. He should be the dean of the school of sciences by now.

...and Whitley will be the President's wife.

Uh TP. You do realize Dwayne and Whitley got married on the show. So I doubt they would have broken them up in a reboot. LOL.

Didn't they try this already when they did that college show on different campuses?

that was a different approach, like MTV's "Real World".

Fully agree. positive inspiration is needed for today's youth.
like stated to this be a great project to revamp with pass character rolling through here and there with others at sit in leadership on the campus. the original had a healthy balance of comedy and real issues (which should be continued). there are so many good story lines available now with our community and HBCUs to get the real message out.

i'm not sure on who could be a good network. i'm iffy on BET, based on their direction of "The Game" (got rich and ghetto, to me). but things could be different.

It's honestly the same issues from before when you think about it.

I think it would be a good idea. I remember watching the show in high school. I think it would inspire high school students to attend college.

didn't the WB try unsuccessfully to bring back 90210 recently? I say just leave it be. the second verse is not as usually good as the first more often than not.
