Dawn Staley spoke up for Ole Miss women’s basketball coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin on Monday.
Staley, head coach for reigning national champion South Carolina, was irked by some comments made by an SEC Network broadcaster during the Rebels’ game at Vanderbilt on Sunday. Ole Miss was leading 76-61 when McPhee-McCuin called a timeout with less than a minute remaining in the game.
Andrew Allegretta, who was on the call for SEC Network-Plus, seemed to take issue with calling a timeout in that situation. After noting her achievements at Ole Miss, Allegretta said, “I can see why some of Coach Yo would be an acquired taste. It’s a lot of bombastic motions on the sideline and all that sort of stuff. Working the officials, timeouts when you’re up by, what, 15 points – all that sort of stuff. Which is – look, be yourself, coach how you’re gonna coach, all that sort of stuff. But I can see where there would be an acquired taste… ”
