Damn....even the NATIONAL MEDIA agrees with SU's Mike Grant

I have no problem with Southern's firing of Grant. After the way he carried on about the Youngstown job there was no way he could ever get his team to play for him. There is a way to apply for a better job and a way not to apply. Grant showed no respect for SU or his players when he shot his mouth off to the media. I'm sure he gave SU the impression that he had no plans on staying there long term so they have given him the opportunity to do some job hunting on a full-time basis.

Co-sign!!! C'mon y'all!!! Would you have taken this at your school??? I seriously doubt it. So please, don't paint Grant as some sad, sympathetic figure. He mouthed off to the press, alienated his players and his employer, he was the one that basically disrespected us and expect SU to take him back like we're the victims of an abusive relationship...um hell to the nawl...

Nope. SU did the right thing in firing this clown. I remember when I first read the article about him applying for the YSU job, I thought to myself that he was really prostituting himself and at same time making SU look like an undesirable place to be. IMHO, he got what he wanted. See ya later, Grant.

why wasn't he fired?

Candidates to come?

Two other thought-provoking names have already surfaced as potential candidates:

Rick Comegy, the winner of four of the last six Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles as head coach at Division II Tuskegee University.
A published report out of Alabama last month indicated that Comegy was interested in the job, and that immediately got Grambling's rumor mill rotating. Word spread that Comegy was in the president's box to discuss the position during the Bayou Classic.

Judson denied that, saying: "I don't know the gentleman. I heard he was already hired! That's news to me. The job has not been filled."

Comegy, who also won a NAIA National Championship in 1995 as head coach at Central State in Ohio, did not return phone calls for this story.

Pete Richardson, the winner of five Southwestern Athletic Conference titles at Southern University over 12 seasons. His name popped up when contract negotiations recently stalled at Southern.

Richardson ? who has never had a losing season in Baton Rouge, and has lost to GSU just twice during that period ? said this week that the length of his guaranteed tenure was the sticking point.

"I wanted a five-year contract ? and we didn't get that," he said. "I have other options I will have to take a look at ? and one of them might be Grambling. It would be weird, but I have to do the best thing for my family and my assistant coaches. I would like to stay here in Louisiana; I like this part of the country. Whatever offer is available, I will take a look at it."

Uh TBF, unlike Grant, Pete's contract had expired and he was a free agent. He was free to do or say whatever at that point. So we couldn't fire him. Plus Pete didn't publicly beg for any job. He just said what his options might be and it was up to SU to step up to the plate. Nothing wrong with that. Pete also didn't abandon his team after losing the SCG. He didn't run off like Grant. Pete never acted like he didn't want to stay. He has stayed past 2 years and dealt with the good and bad that has come his way at SU. Pete has shown his loyalty to the program when he could have left years ago when he was a little younger. I am sure he has had some opportunity to do so. Then the bottom line is this tbf, Pete is a winner. He has done something at SU that no other football coach outside of AW Mumford has done. Not to mention his players graduate as well. So I think Pete has earned a little bit more respect from SU than Grant deserves. What has he done by the way? I can't seem to think of anything major. Oh yeah he made us become a just below .500 team and not last in the RPI. Oh wow, alot of coaches could have done that much at SU. Hell even Jobe could have if he had not been too old.

If Grant really wanted the new job, or the keep his present job if he didn't get an offer, here's what Grant should have said:

Youngstown is an intriguing opportunity to get back near home and rebuild a great program. If offered, I would definitely have to give it strong consideration. I am however torn. I feel like we are doing great things at Southern turning that program around. I think we have some great recruits there who should be a building block for making that program a contender going forth.

Nothing else.

It tells Youngstown that he is making progress where he is, but he is indeed interested in what they have to say. Instead I think he relayed that he doesn't mind crossing bridges and lighting fuses on the dynamite before he gets to the other side.

It encourgages Southern to look at his progress, and if we agree that he's making enough positive momentum, we do what we feel is right to keep him. Instead I think he said, "Damn, I can't wait to get out of this mofo!"

yall did not like him..lets face the fact......just like that backroom deal that sidelined Valdery, yall done Grant the same way

and the appeals hearing will be open to the public, it's going to get ugly

BTW...you just lost a recruit

We didn't like him enough to support his crack habit that's for sure.

Not True..........I believe that most people turned against him after his indiscretions in Ohio. Also, I am certain that most posters in our private forum gave him an endorsement to continue prior to his behavior in Ohio. (I was not one of them)

tbf, the board went with Grant for whatever reason. All appointments in corporate america are backroom deals. I guess you wouldn't now. So aint nothing sinister about how Grant got the job. Some folks were for Valdery. He didn't have the votes to get the job. If something got revealed about his past ........well that's what happens in alot of high profile jobs.

BTW, who cares if we lost a recruit. If he had got hired he would have taken alot more of them. Worry about what PV will put on the court next year. SU will be fine. Can't be no worse than we already have been. This time we will make the right hire and someone with some tack.

After reading Grant's comments, the folk at Youngstown State probably immediately scratched his name from the list of candidates... His actions and comments were NOT how it should be done.

TBF would you have kept him at PVU if he was your coach? If so, why?

Not only was he disrespectful to SU and his players but the bottom line is that he was not WINNING. I can understand Pete talking s*~t. He is without a doubt the best coach in BCF. Grant has yet to make it to the finals of the SWAC tournament. He had been around SU long enough to know that SU is to arrogant to take somebody mouthing off at them like that. The bad thing in all of this is that Grant probally lost at least two jobs with this one interview.

Maybe PV will take him (unless that is the other job that he may have lost)

May we have a moment of silence........MikeBigg and I agree on something.

Yes, because Pv couldn't afford to fire him.

Every once and a while he can be objective about S.U. (particularly if Gram is not in the equation).

Grant should have never been hired at Southern in the first place. Next time there should be a selection committee that is well aware of people like Grant so that this kind of person won't be hired again.

had 1 year left and bringing in some big men.....might as well serve out the 1 year left on his contract

Get rid of McClelland, then talk to us about coaches.
