Cyclosporiasis Cases Are Rising Across 45 States—These 9 Foods Are Most Commonly Linked to the ‘Explosive Diarrhea’ Parasite
The CDC has confirmed more than 6,700 cases this season as health officials investigate outbreaks tied to contaminated fresh produce.
The latest spread includes one multistate outbreak affecting nine states linked to Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. That has since been recalled, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, it is possible to find cyclospora on other fresh produce.
Fruits and vegetables tied to cyclosporiasis outbreaks in the U.S. include bagged salads and salad mixes, basil, cilantro, mesclun lettuce, parsley, raspberries, snow peas, and sweet peas, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Cyclospora can also be found in contaminated water, and can survive chlorinated pool water for a long time.
To prevent infection, the medical center recommended people thoroughly wash or peel fresh fruits and vegetables, cook fruits and vegetables to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit before eating, wash their hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and before, during, and after food prep, and wash all food prep surfaces, dishes, and utensils with hot water and soap after use.
