Could Doug Williams Get the Miss. State Job?

Whatever does happen to Doug will happen for the best. Me, personally I think he's capable of getting the job. He's a proven winner as a player and as a coach. The problem is dealing with all of the other coaching candidates. I believe the offensive coordinator for Miami might get it.

Don't get me wrong. With the talent that Ms. State gets every year, Doug, having been there/done that would be great.

It's not "DOUG" -------- It's preception. The SEC attitude will be--- If they hire a black coach, there are plenty of ex-NFL players that are assistants at the "BIG BCF" schools OR assistants in the NFL. They may interview Doug, but knowing how the "old" alums will feel in the first place about a black hire, add the fact that he came from a 1-aa, and then a HBCU conference at that ............... well you get the picture.

Like I say ..................sad to say.

I dont think Doug would accept the job at Ms. State. I would be totally dismayed if the offer was tendered and he accept.

Doug would accept if offered but he won't even get an interview. Gram is not a stepping stone to MS State. Doug needs to become a 1-A assistant or a HC at in a smaller conference.

Miss. State would be wise to follow the lead of Ohio State. Look at what Jim Tressell did for them, coming from I-AA Youngstown St.

Gram ain't Youngstown State and Doug shole ain't no Tressel.

Doug doesn't have the class of Notre Dame's Tyrone Willingham, but I wouldn't say he's thuggish, just a little street wise.

Tressle was an Ohio State assistant before he went to Youngstown State. He was highly thought of, but, I guess, lacked an experience that OSU wanted in a head coach when he left to go to Youngstown. He had Columbus connections and did a good job at Youngstown, so when the opening came up................

Regards.

Williams was at Navy, just before the arrival of Charlie Weatherbie -- who's now just up the road from GSU at Louisiana-Monroe.

Doug is too thuggish to coach at Miss. State. Miss. State will never consider him.

Too "thuggish" for Ms. ST.? Have you seen their police blotter the last few years?:D

But on the flip side ............. look at how fast the Florida fateful have turned on Zook ................... He came from a good 1-aa program also.

Nope, when Zook was hired he was defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. (Before that, he was the D-coordinator at Florida.)

They kept saying he came from Furman when he got there ............... (not listening to announcers anymore:( )

Williams also wouldn't speculate on how Arkansas-Pine Bluff, still stuck at one SWAC win after a blowout loss to GSU, might deal with coach Lee Hardman.

Hardman, a former UAPB player, is the school's all-time winningest coach. But the Golden Lions have a 2-6 record, after falling to 3-8 last year. The fans have already gotten involved, issuing fliers on campus during homecoming week that said: Hardman Must Go.

"It's not for me to say," Williams said. "We're talking about a SWAC coach. If you asked me how Mack Brown is doing, I might could answer you."

Well I will say it, h@ll yes its time for him TO GO
nita where you at..

Sperm his name is Charlie Strong, he is from Batesville, AR and he went to Uca, hey he might have been there the same time as Bell. Maybe he might take him off of Jsu's hands if he gets the job.

I agree with that. I read the article about if Sherrill steps down/or is fired before the end of the season that Coop will take over (bad choice), but Charlie Strong will be the first black head coach of the SEC.

After that Alabama debacle earlier this year, the next coach in the SEC will be Black

That's okay, Dougie, I'll say it for you:

Dear Coach Hardman:

It may be the fans' fault that you suck, but the fact still remains that YOU SUCK, and it's YOUR JOB, and if anyone in charge has any sense, you'll LOSE that futhamucka IMMEDIATELY, if not SOONER!

Love,

Niter

There, Dougie! I did it for ya!

That's not automatic.

As much as I would like to see it happen, its still a longshot. But good luck to Doug, or any other black candidate.

I tend to agree with

The Na-Sayers.

Although Doug definately has proven his ability to gameplan and motivate, I think the SEC is at least a decade away from seriously considering a Black Head coach. And I feel that A Mississippi school would be one of the last to take such a bold step into the 21st century.

Because of the lack of pressure from the NCAA and the conference administrators, it would be very difficult to convince an SEC AD and President that the best way to go is with an African American. Although this is 2003, the harsh reality is that the Alumni and Booster of these schools hold the purse strings are largely middle to older in age. "Good Ole Boys" And considering La. Miss. Ala. and GA. are Southern heritage States through and through, these good ole boy Alumni would turn red at the notion of "Bringin' a _igga' into the proud tradition of their "great" universities". These same Alumni are the ones who really call the shots because they supply the funding.

Unfortunate as it may be, I think the SEC just isn't ready to do it yet.
