College/University Degrees vs. Technical College/Trade Certificates and Military

lol, that no sleep thing is my motto. It catches up sometimes though.

I lived that for years, but heck I was in the gutter, but think about if you're already born into
a gated community, and driving a fancy car, would you work as hard?

Sir Gram why don't you just go join the military? My JSU classmate did it...and he was like 31-33 when he joined. He always wanted to join the Army but he had a kid when he was young so he decided against joining. His job let him go and he couldn't find another one and now he had two additional mouths to feed (twin daughters) so he signed up. Hasn't regretted it at all. We all looked at him like he was crazy but that was the best thing for him and his family.

But I will say this...and not to be mean...but you've been making these same threads for yearSSS. Same story different date. You can come on TSPN and ask for all the advice in the world but only you can create your own story. What works for everyone else...might not work for you.

Going to college and getting two math/technical degrees worked for me so I will never say a college degree doesn't matter. I don't believe in hard work. I got a sweet Government job and I plan on retiring from this job. I don't believe in the struggle, the hustle, the grind, etc. I'm tired just thinking about it... But all of that may work for the next person.

There are plenty of skilled trades out of work in Chicago/Midwest because the demand is not as great. But it could be different in another state. There's no one answer to success and it seems that is what you are looking for...

There are some that do. It's all about your personal work ethic. If you're born in the ghetto, your motivation is getting out of there. If you're born with a silver spoon in your mouth, your motivation might be living up to your familie's reputation, or taking their business/ legacy and making it even greater.

Some people just have that drive, and some just don't. From MLK St., to Main Street, to Wall Street.

I agree with this, everyone around me was trying their best to get out the hood, then one day I heard
a cry about being ghetto fabulous for life. Also I do believe some people are successful by default, they don't
have any hustle in them, and thank God they were born into situations that it was never needed.

Maybe that's why you see some rich kids strung out on drugs, and some kids who grew up homeless
become very successful. Whatever is in you + Whatever you're faced with = outcome?

The power to face adversity may truly be an innate characteristic from birth.

Sir Gram would like someone to throw him a pity party. Please help him out.
That seems to be the bottom line right there! 2 college degrees and marching band experience can easily grab you 60K a year. Though he may want to brush up on his grammar a bit. Bad grammar comes across horribly in interviews. And if he speaks anything like the way he types, I can see a problem with getting his foot in the door. But if you're not doing anything productive right now, then go get a teaching certification. In Texas, that'll get you 50k by itself. Then work afterschool with the middle school/ elementary school music program. Boom! Another 10-15K. Work band camps in the summer and pick up another 5K. And if you really feel like hustling, teach summer school for another 6-8k. That's 65-80k and you haven't broken a sweat yet! But a few people on here have asked Sir Gram if he was willing to relocate, to which he has yet to answer. But if you enlisted in the military(who announced today that they are "laying off" commissioned officers, now that we are facing peace times)you would certainly be required to relocate. Sounds like its time to man up and make a way, and stop waiting for the money to come and find you! Life doesn't work that way! We can all second guess ourselves and ask "what if", but that doesn't keep the lights on! Time to grow up and quit wishing, and crossing your fingers, and buying scratch offs!

That’s my story. I would have to win the lottery to want to leave this job I have now.

Honestly...I still wouldn't leave even if I won the lottery.

Crazy I know. but eventually I would get bored and want to get another job and it would be my luck I would get a job where I would actually have to work. :scared:

Sir Gram would like someone to throw him a pity party. Please help him out.

I said I was trying to be nice...

But yeah...Sir Gram has posted a thread, or two, identical to this one before. It's unfortunate that during the time in-between the threads his life hasn't changed how he would have liked. Oh well...shouldn't have went to Grambling!! :lmao:

The funny part about it is SirGram thinks he is the only one who has been done wrong by white folks in Corporate America. I mean for real every black person in America has been passed over for promotions, not giving a job because we black, lied on by woody peck peck at work, and the list goes on and on. If we let that stopped us or worried about that none of us would be able to pay our bills and work.

There is an old saying, “The grass is always greener around the septic tank.”

I have been where Sir_Gram is at many times in my life. Black people have been saying college is a waste of money since slavery . . . same play just different actors. I wonder if Harriet Tubman could see what’s going on now she might have taken a few of us back to the cotton fields. I was 36 years old when I got my B.S. degree in Accounting. I have done just about every manual labor job under the sun including the military where I was a cook. I kept going back to school mainly because I didn’t have a ghetto story on why I couldn’t get a degree and I am not good at making a living with my hands. There is nothing wrong with manual labor, if you are good at it. I was never able to work like that for long periods of time even in my 20’s. I pretty much know damn well I can’t do it now at 51. I have a friend about to lose his 3,500 square foot home because he can’t physically do his job anymore. He can’t pay a $2,200 a month mortgage. My friend is just 45 years old but worked himself into permanent back problems from over 25 years of working hard labor. He may not have school loans but he has something that cost more, “Medical Bills.” Medical bills are the leading cause of bankruptcy. Sometimes you have to look at what is considered “Successful.” My friend probably made three times more money than I and had more cars in his driveway that made it looked like a used car lot. But none of that stuff was paid for. He has called me lazy on many occasions. But my 1,400 square foot house and my 11 year old truck are paid for. I can stop working tomorrow, but still keep a roof over my head and drive.

Aristotle once said that “An education is the best provision for old age.”

Maan you just keep missing the point don't you.. This has NOTHING to do with RACE, NOR A PARTICULAR RACE TREATING ME WRONG.. I mean that's wild if you cant see that... Im mean clearly.. This is about everyone! I haven't singled not one race or group of people except "The Military, Tech Schools, Colleges, Universities"....

Im just a type person that likes to attack issues and things that people overlook, or seem to think that something will happen and it will go away. I like to face things more realistically than the average person. And maybe that is something I need to work on involving strengthening my Faith, but not to get it confused with my lack of religious beliefs, I am a religious person and try to be the best I can. I struggle with how optimistic people are to REAL issues and things. Magic just does not happen. This is what it is. Im just putting it out there as a real topic.
