College/University Degrees vs. Technical College/Trade Certificates and Military

Have you looked moving to other areas in the USA? If not you only have yourself to blame.

That's what I had to do. As much as I wanted to stay home, having two parents who aren't doing too well, physically. But for what I wanted to do, Jackson just wasn't a good fit. I had two passions: hospitality/ hotel management industry and health insurance account management (I am doing the latter for right now and loving it).

And depending on where you live, people judge you as soon as they get your resume and see an HBCU on there. When I moved to FL, I parked my U-Haul just in time to make it to three inteviews. I had those lined up before I even hit the road for Orlando.

or overseas. I am big proponent of bein mobile.

I have a chapter bruh who spent a few years working in Singapore. The best thing that happened to his career. I have a classmate in Dubai who's doing her thing and loving it.

You'd be surprised...with all of the mobile technology and social media, it's not as bad as the horror stories you heard from folks back in the 80's and 90's.

Pops, I got a cousin who went to A&M with me doing big things bruh. When he graduated he got on with Verizon out in Dallas. That cat traveled the world. Now he is with Texas Instruments doing the same thing. He is over seas hitting up different companies and only comes to the states three months a year. That cat had a house out in Dallas he only slept in a total off ten months in 8 years. He got rid of it years ago and just picks up a place to rent when in the states.

Right. You have to be willing to move around, especially if you are young and single. I knew this cat who was straight out of college who took an offer as a field engineer (yeah I know). Kid would be in San Diego one week, New Delhi, India the next 3 weeks, Australia the following month, come home to the office for 3-4 days and get sent to Canada, etc... he paid all his student loan debt within a year. A lot of folks don't know the salary benefits of being on call and mobile. Whenever this kid was in the office he got paid his entry level salary. When he was out he got paid hourly with an on-call increase plus per diem. Paid 12 hours a day minimum whether he worked 1 or 12 hours, plus OT.

Sounds like me with being dedicated with the band instead of getting a job like everybody else or doing something to help toward my experience are career. I just should have made better choices at 17 Yrs old and/ or in college.

one of my boyz was in the Boom, I never saw no one more dedicated to the Boom, then one day he said those late practices
was messing with his school work. He dropped the band, He's a Pharmacists now making 200K+

College degree did nothing for me. I had to get my Security + and network plus +.

You might not think it didn't, but it did. Certifications, specialized skills and experience get you paid. The college degree gets you the job. I know some individuals who are good at what they do and have plenty of experienced, but they have hit their roof because leadership/ advanced roles require a college degree.

People say degrees don't help, but I see a lot of people whose lack thereof has held their careers back.

Sir gram, I feel your pain bruh. I really do. After I graduated college in 2007, I could only find a job at a car dealership and I sucked at it. I went to a radio station and ended up getting fired basically because I sucked at sales back then.

Between July 2008 and December 2009, I applied to over 500 jobs (easily). I saved 450 rejection emails in my gmail account as motivation. It was soul-draining. About two years ago, I watched this speech by Eric Thomas on youtube titled, “The Secret to Successâ€￾. It literally changed my life. It is just now that I really understand what he means when says you have to want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe.

Y'all missed the best thing in this thread:

Aye I feel you bruh. My grandma broke down reality of the dope game one day for me after school when i was chilling at her crib over in the projects. It was this cat who been on the corner hustling since 8 that morning. Well later on that evening he was still there around 9 p.m. She said son look at that young man. He has been on that same corner trying to sell that stuff for 12 hours. For the time he has been out there Friday thru Sunday spending all that time he could have gotten a pay check, over time and some sleep. What fool would waste his life for that lil amount of money? I was like dang, she is right. He has spent the whole weekend out there trying to make some dollars, while I have been to work the weekend, been to the movies and still kicked it with the fam. All he has done is stand on a corner hoping not to get caught, not get killed or robbed, and hoped to sell his product.
Been there, done that. Hardest job I ever had. LOL. A month on them corners convinced me that this school thing was my calling.

Exactly. The average dealer can't reach out and touch $5,000 if he needed to. And they are at risk of getting arrested and/ or murdered. But that's all about being lazy. The average d-boy could make the same amount of money working part time at UPS.

This is basically a I'm just sayin type message, but...

A guy told me today that was in the Military, says that he is working on his 3rd Retirement right now and is not even 55 yet. He may not be 50?????? Im just completely and clearly sayin....

How many retirements college graduates working on? Especially those within the past 15 to 20 Years. Im just sayin...................

But he's still working. I'm confused.

:noidea:

Yep as a civilian now, but still on base... Im just sayin..

LIke these Weight Lifting guys I follow say.................. (MAKING ALL KINDS OF GAINS!!)

Okay...but he's still working. I'm not trying to be a smart ass I seriously don't get your point. So he's retired from two other jobs...but he's still working. :noidea: Why does he keep working?

From what I've heard you can retire from the military in 20 years, but are you making enough money to survive once you retire?

Well I mean I guess its just like people who retire from teaching, law enforcement, etc.. and they get bored and come back. Maybe he's just a workaholic. Or maybe he just trying to make all the income he can. I mean if you can retire twice, and still be at a considerable good and able age to continue working... why not. Make those GAINS, bring it in. Why not.

Went to college, and what are they doing now?
And toward the end of the video, which kind of coincides with my "Millennials" Topic, When the people were asked when did they graduate, it was within the past 22 years at the most which puts us at 1992..... So which further helps my argument. And pretty much puts it on the table.....WOW? Im just sayin....

college is no guarantee, but who only tries one thing to be successful?
and that video up there about losing sleep is a good video for kids
who are growing up rough, they know to work hard and not give up, because
they're living in hell now.

But for a middle class kid growing up, with the video games and all the trimmings, not so much
