Well, you're not going to get much better than double overtime in The Granddaddy of Them All. A high-scoring, thrilling game between No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 3 Georgiatook the Rose Bowl into its first overtime in history. The 54-48 victory for the Bulldogs came after blocking a Sooners field goal attempt with running back Sony Michelscoring the game-winning touchdown on a 27-yard run on the ensuing possession in double overtime.

The win puts Georgia in a position to play for its first national championship since 1983. It also marks the largest comeback in Rose Bowl history and just the third double-digit comeback. The only other times were in 1926 when Alabama came back from 12-0 to beat Washington 20-19 and in 1989 when Michigan came back from 14-3 to beat USC 22-14. The comeback also marks a low-percentage win for the Bulldogs for the 2017 season.

NEW ORLEANS -- No. 4 Alabama proved it belonged in the College Football Playoff after all with a 24-6 win over No. 1 Clemson in a Sugar Bowl that signaled the supposed demise of Crimson Tide football has been greatly exaggerated. Bama suffocated the high-octane Tigers offense, holding them to just 188 yards on the evening with nine tackles for loss. The Tide also owned both lines of scrimmage against a Clemson team that made a living up front en route to its third straight ACC title.

The highlight of the night was a stunning interception by defensive tackle Da'Ron Payne, which set up a touchdown from Hurts to Payne in a sequence that will go down in Crimson Tide history.

Here's what we learned in this Sugar Bowl.

1. Alabama's defensive line is really good, too. There was so much talk about Clemson's defensive line in the month leading up to this game, and deservedly so, because it's ridiculously talented. It's just, at times, it felt like Alabama's defensive line was overlooked in the process, and it seems they noticed that. While the entire Alabama defense dominated the Sugar Bowl, it was the defensive line that put on a real show.
 



I gotta give it to OU's offense. A lot of moving parts to confuse defenses and they were cooking in the first half. I figured Georgia would adjust........which they did and start hittin OU in the mouth and held their offense to 10 points in the 2nd half. If OU had a defense they would have been one of the best teams we've seen in CFB history. That run game for GA is just stupid! And props to the true Freshman Fromm.......to play well on that big stage was impressive.

Their defense wasn't built to handle the style of offense that Georgia plays. Everyone in the Big 12 runs a spread offense, Georgia just lines it up and runs it straight down your throat.

Yep, that's what I mentioned to Kendrick in a previous thread. Had Georgia adjusted a little earlier in the first half, they would have beaten OU by 10-14 points.. OU isn't used to seeing that type of defense that Georgia played int he 2nd half. 2nd half they stopped playing 2 safeties up top and dropped a safety down closer to the line of scrimmage and that closed a lot of things up. I do like OU's running back, Rodney Anderson.......that kid is a STUD.

What I don't get about OU is how in the world can you not focus more on defense. Year in and year out it's the same thing.......try to out score people. That may be fun to watch but it doesn't win National Titles. Once Texas gets their offense going, they will take over #1 in the Big 12 because they at least play defense.

I will say this. OU did play a big part in it. They got scare/conservative with some STUPID playing calling. Bringing in Kyler Murray for a play and then running options to the short side of the field. Just plain dumb. You would have thought Jason Garrett and Linehan(sp?) were calling in the plays. LOL Stop trying to trick it up and just line up and play football.
BUT, gotta give it to Georgia too........they did adjust on defense and forced some 3 and outs and played with a totally different level of energy to start the 2nd half.
 
They created the playoffs because two SEC teams and couple years later it happens again people are pissed lol
 
The need to have 8 from all 8 conferences (all conference winners). The at large schools would need to join a conference for consideration. Simple....

It ain’t that simple.

Somebody said all the conference champions need to be invited to the playoffs. If that were the case, Boise State (which finished No. 25 in the last regular season AP poll) would get in a playoff over a bunch of teams that were ranked higher than them simply because it won the Mountain West.

Just because you win your conference, in college football doesn’t necessarily mean you’re one of the 4, 8 or 12 best teams in the country.

And Notre Dame, say what you want about them, plays a tougher schedule every year than a lot of these P5 schools. Why should they have to join a conference (though they play five ACC schools a year)?

College football is a regional game, not a national game like pro sports or even college basketball where teams from vastly different parts of the country are playing each other to determine where these teams stand.

There really isn’t a perfect solution to this. There are 68 teams in the basketball tournament and folks still complain about schools getting snubbed.

Expansion only would make the champion more random, not truer.

I feel totally feel where you are coming from....there is really no way to make it work.

Yes! Alabama's crushing of Clemson proved that without a doubt.
In addition, Clemson would've demolished Ohio State just like they did last year and just like Oklahoma did this year.

A playoffs had been in talks but they always denied it even Obama said something about it. It wasn't until LSU and Bama played again and the college football world broke completely down and they had no choice

Even if it's down to eight, and there are two SEC teams in opposite brackets, it would still probably end with two SEC teams in the championship game.
