Changes Coming To SWAC Schedule

Good decision............Kudos to everyone involved for getting it right.......Better late than never!

I think the new (old) 7-game rule will work, if we apply it this way:

Every team plays everyone in their Division and those games will count.
The two non-Division games will be determined every off-season by requiring the 3rd, 4th and 5th seeded team in either Division play all the schools in the other Division the next year). That way, schedules can be anticipated every spring, so it makes scheduling easier (most 1AA schools schedule year to year anyway).

A scenario:

2007 Season Standings Final (hypothetically)

SWAC East
1. MVSU
2. AAMU
3. Alcorn
4. JSU
5. Alabama St.

SWAC West
1. TxSU
2. UAPB
3. Grambling
4. PV
5. Southern

Under my scenario, in 2008, every SWAC East team would play the 3., 4. and 5. from the West (GSU, PV and SU). Every SWAC West team would play the 3., 4. and 5. from the East (Alcorn, JSU and Alabama St). And only these three games and the divisional games (4) would count.

This still leaves teams the choice to schedule whoever else they want to...
This would certainly be an incentive to be more competitive, in order to not be labeled as a 'doormat' in the conference.... You'd have new schedules every year, and would force the Classics to 'bid' on the matchup games they want, whether the games actually count or not...

This could work....

What chall think???

:dude:

I think an easier way to do it that has some degree of fairness and balance (competition wise, (and as I type this I realize that last year's team is not this year's team)) is to a "Position, One up, One down" Scheme across divisions. Take positions 1,2,3,4 and 5 for the current year. 1 would play 5 (1 down), 1 (equal position), and 2 (one up) from the other division, 2 would play 1, 2, and 3 (tough, I know, but come in first place next time), 3 would play 2, 3, and 4, etc., etc. Nobody gets a free ride. 4 might have the easiest schedule, but they are 4. One gets some reward for winning the Division the previous year with 5, but 5 has to beat one to get some legitamacy.

Regards.

"KNEGGRO PLEASE!!! Save that lame azz bullschat for the smack board. Now keep your azz out of here while grown folks talk business."

Not one thing I said was smack, but you on the other hand tried to smack with the "want to be power" part. Simply put again, its time for some of these ADS to earn their paychecks. If your school is apart of that then oh well, it is what it is. Everyone on this board already knows why the 7-game mandate was taken away anyways. I aint gone say no name but some schools couldnt fulfill their schedules under the 7-game mandate. JSU, SU, and GSU I can say would not have those problems (scheduling out of conference games). They say the truth hurts when it hits close to home huh, NOW THATS GROWN FOLKS TALK.

NEWS FLASH... You're not a power anymore. You haven't been one in a long time. You have shown no signs of being one in the future. So all talk of you being part of a big three is nothing but smack. Now will you please take your small-time behind back to the smack board where you may be able to convince someone who doesen't know any better that you are still a power and that you belong to a big three. Go on over to the smack board Junior.

:dude:

I like this scenario with TSU on top.....but seriously, I think this should work. I know that SU and JSU would want to play every year. This game usually draws a big crowd and neither school would want to give up this game. Now, would the SWAC allow them to play each year and let it be not be counted as a conference game in the years that they are not scheduled to play? I think that is OK.

I like the fact that maybe this will allow schools to play some geographical rival games. I think TSU should play Sam Houston, its only about a 35 minute drive.

NEWS FLASH...You never were a powerhouse..You definitely do not show any signs of being one in the future...and i'll let you have the smack board since you continously try to smack on the sports board, ok grandpa.;)

Our AD is so inept at raising money himself that he will talk to any Bowl Division (formerly known as Division I-A) teams for us to play for a paycheck (University of New Mexico, and UTEP) as a matter of fact, we have had discussions with the University of Houston for a matchup next season. Make a long story short: we won't have any problems meeting the four game OOC schedule.

It's obvious that this guy doesn't have a clue. Talkin like a nerd who knows nothing about sports, but just wants to be included in the conversation.

SWAC changes football format

League's 10 teams will play 7 conference games instead of 9 in '08

By David Brandt
[email protected]

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has decided to switch from the current nine-game league football schedule to its old seven-game format beginning in 2008.

SWAC commissioner Robert Vowels, along with the league's presidents and chancellors, made the decision in a meeting late last week in Birmingham.

"It's something that should be a positive for everyone in the league," Vowels said. "Hopefully, this will help scheduling concerns."

Under the nine-game format used since 2005, SWAC schools played every other team in the conference, which provided a balanced schedule. The downside was it left just two available non-conference dates in an 11-game season.

In football, the SWAC is divided into five-team divisions - the West and East. Jackson State, Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State are all in the East.

Vowels said under the seven-game format, schools will play all four other teams in their division every year.

Details for playing the other division have not been completely worked out, though Vowels said he wanted rivalries - such as the Jackson State vs. Southern game, which drew about 40,000 fans this season - to remain intact.

And that is also a paramount detail for Jackson State coach Rick Comegy.

"I'm for (the change) as long as we get to keep some of those big money games like Southern and Grambling," Comegy said. "That's a big deal for us. As long as we maintain those rivalries, I think it's good because it provides flexibility in the schedule."

Also discussed during the meetings were the relocation of the SWAC headquarters to another city from its current home in Birmingham.

Jackson is one of several cities - including Memphis, Houston, New Orleans and Alexandria, La. - that has made a bid to host the SWAC headquarters, along with the football and basketball championships.

According to an Associated Press story, Birmingham is budgeted to spend $584,120 of city money on the SWAC in fiscal year 2007.

The SWAC also does not pay for its football and basketball locations or its office space in the A.G. Gaston Building in downtown Birmingham.

Jackson city spokeswomen Carolyn Redd has said the SWAC would want a similar financial arrangement - if not better - to move to Mississippi.

The SWAC headquarters have been in Birmingham since 1999 when it moved from New Orleans.

I am still not for playing teams that are not on your rotation BUT as a JSU fan, I can't complain becasue it is designed for JSU-Alcorn-SU-Grambling.

Now, let's see if we can get SU to play us and Alcorn when we rotate off. I think GSU-JSU-Alcorn are all for keeping the games going.

Also, someone said that JSU complained the last time we had the 7 game format. Yeah, we did. Hughes was fired because of the 7 -game format. However, he knew which games he had to win and he did not win them. If the 9-game mandate was always in place, this is how the SCG (EAST rep) would have looked.

1999 Jackson State
2000 Jackson State
2001 Alabama State
2002 Jackson State
2003 Alabama State
2004 Alabama State
2005 Alabama A&M
2006 Alabama A&M

Also, had Hughes gone to Bham in 3 of his 4 years, he may not have been fired and JSU may have never had 3 back to back losing seasons which could have meant that we could have gone back to Bham from 2003 to 2006 at some point.

Thank goodness. It is has been a long time coming.......New presidents at our schools must be helping change some minds or Vowels got some nutz and told them mofos what is needed and laid out the reasons why. Good deal

Vowels don't have any nutz so that didn't happen. The AD's just laid out their plan and the Presidents just decided to go with it and put the fallout on them.

Vowells needs to come up with how we are going to determine which out of division team games will count NOW.... and also will the two teams rotate or are you on your own in choosing the teams. I honestly see more MESS coming out of this than the 9 game mandate.

Yep more mess will come out of this.

That's the least of our problems. Now we'll be able to schedule tougher opponents and bring back some credibility to the SWAC.

I believe the SWAC Presidents saw the resurgence of JSU football, and they said the SWAC is now ready to compete outside the conference once again.
To JSU be the glory! :emlaugh:

Schools will never willingly schedule tougher opponents just to have a game. With school being able to have 4 non conferance games expect 1 money game away, 1 Classic game and 2 other games at home for some wins.

Exactly. We should have a 8 game mandate with one traditional rival. I can see some teams back dooring there way into the championship.

Yep, this would have been a better choice when you only had to lose 1 game from the other division on a 2 year rotation(home & home).

Hey it works in the other conferences. So it will have to work in the SWAC. We can't be worried about who dodged who. The SEC don't worry about that nor does the Big 10 or Big 12. It is what it is.

None of those conferances play only 7 conferance games and the Swac aint on their level either. Lets compare apples to apples and not oranges to apples.

The truth is those 3 schools you named were the leaders of the 9 game mandate.

Also, someone said that JSU complained the last time we had the 7 game format. Yeah, we did. Hughes was fired because of the 7 -game format.

You need to come back to earth, you always talk about Hughes did so much to hurt the JSU program. He always had a winning season and people did attend the games regularly. You said the next coach was the best thing since sliced bread and we all know how that turned out.

The fact of the matter is that the SWAC really didn't have a choice but to go back the the 7 game format when you consider that the playoff championship schools (formally 1-AA) voted not to have a 12 game season.

Yep.. for a change, I understand what they were waiting on. I think that had the 12 game format been passed, we would have stayed with the mandate. This is a good job by them for ONCE.

I am sure they were........but 2 of the schools have new Presidents and all 3 have new ADs since that happened.

you are right but all for different reasons....GSU always played a 9-game schedule. However SU was under pressure to play McNeese, NWState, etc...Pete felt his program was not supported enough to play those games week in and week out....and Hughes knew he was getting shafted by kicking AAMUs azz and watching them go to Bham.

I agree with everything you say...do you have a point?

Hughes was not a good coach.
I gave Bell a chance
I am glad they are BOTH gone.

Any questions??

Sadly, it's some folks on here from "some" schools who have some serious delusions of grandeur, dwelling on the past. And not wise enough to see that things in the game done changed.

oh well....

So tell us MH........what has changed?

JR,
One word----PARITY!!!!!!

it's not the same ole, same ole anymore.
let's see, A&M vs PB for the SWAC title.
Gram 3-8
SU loses to PV

Long gone are the days where "some" schools dominated.
but yet, some people are posting as if thats the case.
And please, save the talk about how the future is so bright for "some" schools. Heck, anybody from any school can get on here and say the same thing about their own school. And seeing how NONE of us know what the future holds, NONE of us can rightfully discount it either.

just read thru this topic again. Objectively

There's even the notion that this 7 game thing is because of the rise of a certain school. :retard:

It's sad, yet comical at the same time.

it's not rocket science. the sec and now the acc manages this every year. the sec plan is simple and fair and let's you know who your going to play years in advance. play everyone in your division. you get one permanent rival from the other division and the two rotating teams from the other division. very simple and straight forward. no not knowing who you play until the season is over.

for those that say this allows teams to backdoor their way to a championship....win the games on your schedule and you don't have to worry about the next guy. if someone goes 7-0 in the swac they deserve to be in the scg regardless of what 7 teams they played.

for those that say we want grambling or southern or both on our schedule this season........ THERE IS NO WELFARE IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL....FILL UR STADIUM WITH YOUR FANS AND STOP HOPING SOMEONE BRINGS A CROWD AND STOP LOOKING TO SEE WHO'S ON THE SCHEDULE BEFORE YOU DETERMINE IF YOUR GOING. if your a fan be a fan. buy a season ticket and go to all the games even if they're playing jackson baptist jr high cafateria staff. aiight!!

they should not allow a swac team to play another swac team if they are not on your 7 game swac schedule. it just creates confusion and defeats the purpose and spirit of the 7 game mandate. you want a money game? go play usm or louisiana-monroe or troy, but the league office should have SEVERE penalties for any schools that would attempt to subvert the 7 game mandate.

Well excuse the one post about the 7 game attributed to one school thing. We know that is not the case.

Now to the parity. While I agree that some things have changed in the SWAC. I also think the old schools who dominated got lazy and rested on their laurels more than they should have. But I think now they understand they can not be lazy. The one thing that was a given back in the day was coaches stayed and won. All those old coaches are now dead or gone... In our case Pete got lazy and did not keep up what he should have more than the other schools all of the sudden got so good. AAMU came into the SWAC in good shape...so their rise aint really shocking. Gram and JSU made coaching hire mistakes. Easily fixed. I think what rubs folks the wrong way is the fact that some JSU, GSU and SU posters seem to dismiss the other schools as having no chance. I do not think like that. But what bothers me is the so called parity thing. If all the schools were playing well and just beating up on each other then that is one thing. But you and I both know that is not the case. We had some down right horrible coaching going on.

Maybe that's were the parity is........we all have somewhat suspect coaches. That is the big difference. Do you actually think a WC Gordon lead JSU team with that same talent they had last year or even the Kent years would underachieve in the SWAC and blow the leads they had this year?

Do you think Doug would have allowed Gram to play like they did this year?

In our case , a younger Pete with the old staff in place.....would they have lost the same games to say a PV ?

Now this is where I think those said schools have seen the light and will go after coaches that some of the other SWAC schools can't afford or get. JSU already has Comegy and I figure by 08 he will have them rolling like he had Tuskegee. It is no denying that he is on the right track. We will be in the same situation as Gram this time next year. So I aint expecting SU to be all that next year in a lame duck season for ole Pete. But again that isn't parity to me. Parity to me is when all the teams are really good. You have said it yourself......folks aint that good(seriously). SU and Gram had no business being as sad as we were last year. The talent level wasn't that pityful were you couldn't at least win 7 games if the coaches had done their job. Also look at Alcorn. They have had teams in the last few years that should have won much more than they have........again its coaching. I know we don't get the same players we used to back in the day......but some of coaching is crazy to me. We all need innovative coaches........where are they?
