Celebration Bowl TV ratings

We already knew the Celebration Bowl would break attendance records, but TV ratings are now out for the game as well.

The game saw its third-biggest TV audience ever in terms of television ratings and its second in total viewership as South Carolina State knocked off highly-favored Jackson State 31-10.

According to Showbuzz Daily, the game received a rating of 1.61 and had 2.59 million viewers. Those numbers were third behind the Independence Bowl between UAB and BYU and the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl featuring Utah State and Oregon State.

The Celebration Bowl dwarfed the remaining bowl games which took place on Friday and Saturday. Its next closest competitor had a .99 rating and 1.62 million viewers. It more than doubled the viewership of the FCS semifinal between James Madison and North Dakota State and blew the South Dakota State vs. Montana State game out of the water.

“It more than doubled viewership of the FCS playoff games”

And clowns in the MEAC still wonder why we told the FCS playoffs to kick rocks. NCAT, Hampton & TNSU will continue to look foolish for chasing a pot of gold they’ll never be allowed to touch

Wouldn’t be shocked at all if FAMU crowns themselves FCS Champions. Because they were “hand selected” to participate in the playoffs.

Well first of all, you need to use context. Games on ABC will always outdraw games on ESPN. ESPN is a cable channel that you have to pay for, ABC is not. Only way it becomes comparable really is with both on the same network. Also, there is nothing wrong with wanting to compete for more than just the celebration bowl. The WKU-App State game drew well too but either one of them would still prefer a spot in the playoffs. This mentality is why yall keep getting blown out when you play out of conference though... that's basically accepting it as ok. Most seem content with it so whatever works. The best team in the SWAC just got mauled by a 6 win team in a conference that only has 6 members. That's awful lol.. ratings be damned. And when you look at the fact that JSU had all of those star transfers it makes it even worse. Considering A&T and Hampton....and TNSU's record against the SWAC, they may look foolish but they definitely have learned a competitive advantage from playing those teams that you all haven't yet. A&T pretty much dominated the celebration bowl themselves until they left.

Keep getting blown out?

Dude JSU barely lost to ULM..SWAC has beat the MEAC and other conferences plenty of times out of conference.

Dominating the Celebration Bowl brought exposure to NCAT. Y’all finished in the middle of a no name conference and folks forgot y’all existed.

What has Tennessee State done with being in the OVC? Not a damn thing! Their biggest games continue to be games against other HBCUs.

But continue to keep acting like you’ll get treated better since you’re not in a HBCU conference anymore.

Maybe if y’all tap dance a little harder they’ll accept you

Which playoffs? The CFP that they were trying hard not to let Cincinnati in? Of course, they would rather be in the CFP than playing in some rinky-dink bowl game. But if you ask them if playing in that bowl game as FBS Group of Fives is better than breaking even/losing money in the FCS playoffs ... they both will tell you that's why we left FCS to begin with.

I keep forgetting not to bother giving you serious replies.

They left for more money and became more competitive. The SWAC left for more money and got worse. You had two spots in the postseason to change the narrative this year and got blown out in both. But the sad part is that it's expected and no one cares lol. Whatever works for yall I guess. Again, obviously competing against better competition HAS improved their level of play considering they're like 16-5 against the SWAC in the CB and the ESPN game at the beginning of the year. The numbers don't lie.

Got worse according to who?!

The SWAC and MEAC teams beat other FCS teams at the same rate I’m willing to bet.

You’re talking as if every SWAC gets beat by 50 in none SWAC games, and we’re the only FCS conference to ever lose non conference games.

With the exception of North Dakota & Jacksonville State please tell me what FCS schools look good against FBS schools on the regular?

I forgot only in the SWAC do we lose non conference games :(

Please don’t have me make a thread on SWAC & MEAC non conference game results

How did the SWAC tell the FCS playoffs to kick rocks , when one of your members led a 2 month campaign to advocate for them playing in said playoff?

You do realize that the celebration bowl is owned by ESPN and all viewership and ticket sales ( other than the tickets to the schools ) benefit ESPN right

Exactly why I said I forgot to stop giving him serious replies lol. It's a troll account.

No playoffs for NC A&T, Hampton and TN State and no Celebration Bow and where do you go now? I'll wait you go "home". If it wasn't for the Celebration Bowl there will be no move to the Little South Conference that you and Hampton are currently in now. A&T will not be the same and Hampton was a middle of the pack in the MEAC conference for a long time so chase the gold behind that rainbow. Welcome to the Tennessee State world now mediocrity and middle of the pack conference team if not at the bottom. If NC A&T was the power they claim to be they should have got the conference on board to breakdown that league into two divisions in football and competed in the playoffs and the Celebration Bowl. No Celebration Bowl victories you don't get that national exposure to make that conference move. Please go back before 2015 pre-Celebration bowl and talk about that exposure you were getting then! I hear nothing but crickets.

Not sure what u mean where do we go? Not sure about other schools but A&T goes back to the lab to get to the playoffs. We played from 15 to 19 in either playoffs or Bowl game. So we haven't fallen off the map , we had a down year.

As far as your other comments , A&T had been complaining about travel since 2015. You can't make a conference do anything when you have shortsided leadership. If u recall , WSSU left , Hampton, SSU before we pulled out before us. SSU and WSSU were going to be apart of the southern division of the MEAC. When they left no replacements were identified and thus what led to us , FAMU and BCU leaving.

The Big South was after us before the Celebration Bowls. We just finally agreed to join.

And we were known nationally before Celebration Bowl for academics

I call BS. Hampton didn't leave before 2015. If you were bent on leaving before the Celebration Bowl first agreement no one put a gun to your board of Regents and administrators head to keep you in the MEAC. The school benefited even more from their Celebration Bowl victories that is what help put you in the position to get more national recognition than your academics. A&T supporters haven't been coming on the Sports boards and bragging about academics in these posts. I understand you had one bad year in football; but none of the schools in the BS are going to let you run that conference like you did in the MEAC.

No one said HU left before 2015. Hampton left in 2017 and became office Big South members 7/1/18. A&T has been complaining to the MEAC about travel since 2015.

Not really understanding why you're upset about us leaving when we did. We tried the Celebration Bowl. We had fun. We won 4 and now it's on to the next challenge. Not seeing the issue

A&T finished 4th in HBCU attendance behind JSU, SU and FAMU.

So explain your statement again lol
Homecoming (22K) will draw a big crowd regardless who playing ... that's for 99% of HBCUs. The second highest home game for them was against NCCU of the MEAC (15K) The third highest home game is Gardner Webb (11K). Gardner Webb is in state school so they likely helped the numbers tremendously but still wasn't enough to out do NCCU.

I am not upset that your school did what they think is in their best interest; but turning your nose up on the HBCU's who didn't chase that false narrative of the FCS is going to get us more exposure to eventually join the FBS.
