Can the SWAC buy this software?


that will have to go on the backburner because I'm still awaiting the televised SWAC Title game.
 



They had something similar for the Grambling vs ASU Championship game....but the site never updated after halftime.....it is cheesy but it is better than nothing.... I just don't understand..
I am sure there is some sole that's asking for a chance just to be in the headquarters...oh well...until we win the lottery and more fans come out for all sports then we will come up short.

Another subject but whether we are paying or not.... didn't more fans attend the Biloxi and Texas championships rather than Bham?
I was very disappointed in the A&M vs ASU attendance last night (4,903) and the SU vs JSU game only had 437 fans.... I know Bama has more supporters of the SWAC than this. As a conference we have to do better.
If the CIAA can draw huge crowds and successful championships then I know we can out do them. Check out their Game Attendance..men and women (IMPRESSIVE)

Raleigh, NC - The remaining tickets for the 57th Annual Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball Tournament to be held February 25 - March 2, are on sale at Raleigh's Entertainment and Sports Arena (ESA). Tickets have been on sale at member schools' ticket offices and CIAA headquarters since the fall, but have long since been sold out.

"The CIAA tournament has grown exponentially in attendance and popularity since coming to Raleigh three years ago, and the City has exceeded all our expectations as a host," said CIAA Commissioner Leon Kerry. "Everything, from the arena to the local facilities and the hospitality, to the quality of fans has been outstanding."

Attendance has increased 72 percent since the event moved from Winston-Salem to Raleigh in 1999. The CIAA has recently renewed its contract with the City of Raleigh and will be here for three more years.

The week-long event described by Essence magazine as "a must-attend event," includes men's and women's basketball tournaments, fashion shows, cheerleading and dance exhibitions, band competitions and a vendor pavilion. The CIAA tournament is one of the largest athletic and cultural events on the East Coast involving historically black colleges and universities, attracting students, alumni and fans nationwide.
 
Bluephi... why would you be dissapointed with the AAMU and ASU attendence stats. The whole arena was packed.... Keep in mind that Fair Park only holds 5000. If you are upset, be upset with JSU, SU, PV, UAPB,MVSU, crowds. I saw 3 Texas SO shirts, and none from the rest. AAMU, ASU, and Alcorn was the only schools with fans. This is the SWAC TOURNAMENT, you are suppose to support all of your schools. I promise you there will be more AAMU fans at the game than any other school tonight besides Bama St, and AAMU is out of the tournament. AAMU fans TOOK OVER Fair Park last night Maroon and White EVERYWHERE.
 
moving it from Biloxi was a dumb move. I went to the Biloxi Tournament and I was impressed with the turnout. The championship had over 6K and it was packed. It was central for all school's involved.

The only drawback to Biloxi was the lack of nightlife for some people. But at least you can gamble.

B-Ham costs too much to fly to at the last minute and driving there is crazy. And the attendance will never meet its requirements up there. If the Bama schools can't draw what does that tell you?

Move it to a city where there's appeal even if your team loses. (New Orleans) Even if my team got to N.O. and lost, I would not care.

You will complain until it is in Houston... BAMA PACKED Fair Park, so that BAMA cant draw **** is stupid. You have been knowin what weekend the tournament started for a year, so the only thing that is last minute is YOU.

The SWAC tournament will NEVER be like the CIAA tournament. The only tournament larger than the CIAA tournament is the ACC tounrament.. YES, IT IS LARGER THAN THE SEC TOURNAMENT. It sells out before the tournament every year and ticket prices are over 100 dollers.

Half of the people complaining are people who were not there themselves. I would rather see a packed small arena than a empty large one.

nah there was no way around getting out of work today when we were short.... I work with an AAMU Alum and we talked about coming to Bham.... but of course I had to work...

Why do you keep saying LAST MINUTE PLANE TICKET... How long have you been knowing what the dates for the tournament was? There was nothing last minute about it. Are you saying, you will only go if PV makes it out the first round? Why should the SWAC be in Houston when PV and Texas So have a combined attendence of 500 a home game. AAMU, BAMA ST, and Alcorn let in home attendence.... and those were the 3 schools that were representin hard on Friday night

Again Dahill, I never said Houston, I said a city that is central to all SWAC cities. Biloxi and New Orleans fits the bill.

You mentioned AAMU, Alcorn and ASU representing the most on Friday, they should because their the three closest cities. TSU fans are located too far from the festivities.

Plus, the SWAC Tournament is the same weekend as the Texas HS Basketball State Championships. You have SWAC folks going to that event regardless of who is playing. Don't let it be a black Houston school in the championship game.

If a Houston school I have ties with advances to state, I'll stay in Texas and go to Austin because I don't have to miss any work.

Only way I am in B-ham if I know PV or TSU has a legitimate chance at winning the game. I just can;t hang out in B-ham knowing my teams don't have a decent chance.

New Orleans or Biloxi would be the ideal location. Bham is just too far from Houston to just jump up and come down at the last minute. I say last minute because I would never just spend the weekend in Bham and hope my team makes it to the finals. People from Texas doesn't look at Bama as being somewhere to spend the weekend.rolleyes:

did you? I was in Biloxi, Baton Rouge, etc. If it is within an 8-hour drive I'll be there. Only way your going to make Birmingham without busting your pocketbook is to book a plane ticket in advance.

And if my team is not guaranteed a game in B-Ham, I seriously doubt I am going to waste that much money. If I am going to spend a weekend in B-ham for football regardless of whose playing, why go back for basketball?

Do you not see that you are saying that you won't support the Tournament unless you know that Prarie View will be in the Final game? The only way you will know that is if you have paid the refs.

I understand what you are saying, but you contradict yourself throughout this conversation. Plus, in Texas High school sporting events seem to be more important than college sports all over.
 
When only 40% of your schools are involved in the conferance tourny thats at the tourny site, what do you expect. And when that site is at the furthest site east of where all your schools are located, don't expect those other 60% to travel that far and support it when their teams are not involved.

Buy this software, ONNIDAN, attendance, Biloxi ... on to ad-nauseum.

In the order above ... We (I) have the software ... I have worked with the ONNIDAN group since it's inception (we are TIGHT friends) and I helped ONNIDAN implement using the "LIVE" web update. I use the word implement because taught is too self-engrandizing a word. Having the number of people in place with the knowledge (expertise) to provide that service is the key. Since you obviously were not at this year's tournament, you were not able to see the for the FIRST time, there were remote stats monitors on press row, providing up-to-date statistics to the reporters and radio. That is the first step ... several of our schools WANT to do this at their home games, but haven't seen the system hooked up first-hand before. We will be working in the off-season to implement that a some arenas next year.

Attendance and the CIAA ... It was just last week, somebody on this site was complaining about paying $7.00 to see a SWAC playoff game at Texas Southern. If you are *****ing about 7 bucks, and then travel to the tourney site (B'ham), how the heck are you (the fans) going to start talking comparing attendanc to the CIAA. SWAC tournament ticket were priced at $20 for a weekend pass ... CIAA tickets cost $95 face value ... scalpers get upwards of $200. I worked in the CIAA for 12 years and was PR director for the conference for 3 years ... the CIAA's attendance didn't happen overnite. It took many years to build that following, fans even plan their days off (vacation) around the tournament. They travel to any lengths, any city, to be in attendance PLUS, the CIAA tournament is and EVENT , with a lot of other things going on. CIAA fans don't care who will be playing in the championship game, they are going to be there anyway ... While B'ham's Fair Park ain't hog heaven ... It was full to the rafters. How many tournaments have you seen this week on ESPN or ESPN2 where the teams played in a 10,000 or 15,000 seat arena and there seem to be no one there ... If you play in a 10,000 seat house and you have 2,500 or less people there ('cause it cost too much to travel here or there) what does that look like.

In Biloxi, the conference lost money BIG TIME ... hotels charged too much AND, there is a law that people under 21 cannot stay in casino hotels (the teams). From the discussions I've been privy to ... Yes, we are looking to upgrade to larger venues and trying to make the tournament an event ... but that all depends on the fans and how they respond ... If we go all out to do these things, will the fans be there???

My last words are SUPPORT the SWAC and it's teams ... Stop *****ing, until YOU do something positive.
 
Birmingham is just to damn far. The Swac Tourny is a bamma thing now. WHy in the hell does someone want to go way out to Birmingham.

I asked about this software because I thought it would be great for the conference, especially since we don't have a worthwhile TV package. Most SWAC markets don't carry the MBC network on Cable TV.

Also, it seems the SWAC is going backwards in the area of TV exposure. This was the first year I can remember that even the Title game was not on ESPN/ESPN2. I'm not sure who dropped the ball on this one because it appeared that every D-1 conference was represented except the SWAC on ESPN/ESPN2.

On a personal note, the SWAC can LEARN a lot from the "complaints" on this board. Some may be presented as harsh statements but still the same they are legitimate and things even the lower tier D-1 and D-II conferences have in place.

Just to add a little insight into some of the comments made. . . .

The SWAC does have the software that we used to provide live stats for the MEAC tournament. In fact, we used the football version to provide live updates of the SWAC football championship game last December. As someone noted, there were server issues and the information on the internet was not updated as often as it should have been.
Some of the bugs in the software were fixed in time for basketball season.

SWAC PR Man's statement about the stat monitors was correct. Only the SWAC and CIAA tournaments had live stat monitors for press usage at their tournaments this year. Although our company provided stat services for the MEAC tournament, live stat monitors were not part of the contract. The MEAC only wanted live internet stats while the CIAA contracted for both monitors and live internet stats.

We worked with the TV crew for the SWAC tournament and from our perspective, the SWAC is still in transition from "having others do it" to "doing it ourselves".

Former Commissioner Washington had negotiated an arrangement for the conference to produce its own television package. There were to be football and basketball games of the week concluding with the SWAC Tournament.
Unfortunately, the company granted the contract had limited knowledge of Black College Sports and wasn't aware of many of the "issues" related to pulling things off. They made a strong financial proposal but didn't have the expertise, in house, to pull it off.

The MEAC went through a similar experience with its first production company before deciding to use a brother whose company had more sports production experience.

Since the SWAC had committed to do its own games, when ESPN inquired about doing the SWAC basketball championship game, it was felt, at the time, that the SWAC package would be more financially beneficial to the conference than the amount that ESPN was proposing.

We don't know exact figures but the difference was enough for the SWAC to consider going it alone, much like the MEAC package on Comcast, the Sunshine Network and MBC.

Interim commissioner Frank worked to maintain the television relationships that Washington had developed but a combination of September 11 fallout and miscommucation between some of the production, sales and marketing interests led to a suspension of the football package, about a month into the season.

For reasons, I don't know, the telecast of the men's and women's championship game wasn't finalized until Wednesday March 6.

From our understanding, the conference said "put up or shut up" to the contractor who was supposed to be doing the TV package all season.

In order to save the relationship and perhaps build a stronger base for next season, the contractor got in touch with another brother, whom we know very well, to put together a team to produce the championship games.

Many of us dropped what we were doing (in our case, we left a stat crew in Richmond while we headed to Birmingham) to get to the SWAC Tournament. In less than 48 hours, a production crew was assembled to get the game on the air.

MBC (Major Broadcasting Cable) and The Vision Channel (another cable channel) agreed to finance the cost of production with the hope that a foundation could be laid to approach advertisers about a full package beginning next fall.

Obviously, there was little time for promotion and only when people found that the games WERE NOT on ESPN, did they realize a change from the past.

As a little more background on the situation, MBC is beginning a promotional push to get on more systems. Often the decision on whether to carry or not carry a particular cable channel is made by the local cable company. MBC has had difficulty having its programming added to local cable systems because the local decision makers feel that they only need one "Black" channel and that channel is BET.

Local cable subscribers can help the process by calling their cable company and requesting that MBC be added to the available offerings. If the cable company hears from enough people it may make a move more quickly.

Much of MBC's programming is religious based and not totally Black but they still suffer from the perception that they are only a "Black" channel.

MBC has made a commitment to cover HBCUs and Black College Sports. One of the founders of the network is Willie Gary, a noted attorney and Shaw University alum. Gary has personally helped finance the return of football to his alma mater. And the basketball team just won its first CIAA Championship.

MBC had a heavy presence at the CIAA Tournament this year and they are carrying "Major Black College Sports" a revamped version of the 30-minute weekly sports program that BET dropped last year. The show has a new host and is much less hip-hop than in the past. At least the new host knows something about Black Colleges.

The SWAC has a history of doing its own thing from the Bayou Classic to the Football Championship Game. Much of that philosophy carried over into the development of a conference television package.

BET is gotten out of promoting Black College Sports and its new owners will continue to run cheap-to-produce music videos rather than invest the time and money in sports productions. They see it as a bottom line decision rather than a service to the community that could produce a profit over time.

And the sports productions that they do run MUST fit into a three-hour window, regardless of the outcome.

The only way that Black College conferences can get television exposure is by producing their own product. The MEAC has the most extensive package followed by the CIAA. The SIAC got into the mix this year with three football games and its men's basketball championship produced by the same company that did the CIAA package.

We've probably said enough for now but will be happy to provide any additional insight if we can.
 
where were you all year when the questions were being asked? You answered 98% of our problems. Thanks a lot.

However, in Houston we have numerous spanish channels, asian etc., so I do not know what the deal is with getting another black channel in Houston.
