The California Ban on Affirmative Action Is Causing Severe Damage to Black Opportunities in the Nation's Largest System of Higher Education

Just about everyone connected with affirmative action in higher education is under the impression that the California ban on preferences has done no damage to the educational opportunities of African Americans. Not so! One must read the statistics with care. There are powerful interests in California and elsewhere with the motivation to deceive the public.

Here are just a few examples of the continuing damage that the California ban on race-sensitive admissions is inflicting on African Americans' opportunities in higher education.

? In 1997, prior to the ban on race-sensitive admissions, 515 black students were admitted to the University of California at Berkeley. This spring 290 black students were admitted to Berkeley. This number of African-American admits is more than 43 percent lower than was the case prior to the ban on affirmative action. This is a severe setback for African Americans aspiring to the best that the California system has to offer.

? At the prestigious UCLA campus, the damage is almost as severe: 32 percent fewer black students were admitted this year than was the case in 1997 when race-sensitive admissions were still permitted in the University of California system.

? At the highly rated medical school of the University of California at San Diego, there is only one black student who is currently enrolled. This is down from 14 black students just three years ago.

? At one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country, at the University of California at San Francisco, black enrollments are down 31 percent over the past three years.

? The most severe damage from the bans on affirmative action has occurred at the University of California business schools that are now restricted from using race as a positive factor in the admissions process. At the business school at UCLA, black enrollments are down 42 percent from three years ago when many of the students enrolled were beneficiaries of race-based admissions.

At Berkeley's highly respected Haas School of Business, black enrollments have dropped 29 percent over the past three years.

In order to secure the enactment of further restrictions on African Americans to the best undergraduate and graduate programs in the University of California system, Ward Connerly goes on record assuring Americans that the California ban on affirmative action has done no damage to blacks.

Plainly, this is false. Once Ward Connerly is made to tell the truth, his ugly career may come to an end.

Three questions:

1. Are they getting the same number of AA applicants?

2. If so, how many are they denying because of being not qualified? (if any)

3. Were any of these non-qualifiers being accepted pre-1997?

Makes you wonder.........

Okay one more. What's the retention rate?

If it was Alabama,,,

This is in California. California is an amazing place to me, and I have 5 years living here and am back living here temporarily now.

On the one hand, California is the foremost liberal haven,, from tree hugging wackoes to Berkley expeditionaries who traveled to the south in the 50s and 60s only to get their skulls cracked. You got every race imaginable out here intermingling socially and in the work place and living together. On the other hand, California has been the leader in this type of legislation. How is it that they produce this type legislation? Have the liberal/left-wing extremests produced a backlash?

Just think what the outcry would be if a state in the south (especially Alabama or Mississippi) was in the forefront in passing this type of legislation. It would be the civil rights movement all over again, but since this is California,, not much is said about it, and it's no big deal.

Though California has its share of liberals, it also has its share of conservatives. Remember that Ronald Reagan was elected governor in 1966. Pete Wilson was elected governor about 20 years later.

Texas has had similar numbers as well. At Texas A&M the undergraduate enrollment has dropped. In engineering the graduate enrollment has dropped even more sharply.

reagan, etc

yes, that's part of what I find so amazing about a place that has the most liberal image in the nation.

one thing that nobody knows much about nor hear much about, for example, is the uprisings in Los Angeles in the 60s. there were armoured vehicles roaming the streets of L.A. with the L.A.P.D. brewtally putting down uprising, but the media never shows that or does documentaries and specials on that,,,, no,,, only the hoses, dogs and Bull Connors armoured personnel carriers during the apex of the civil rights conflict in Birmingham, Alabama.

Even to this day, even despite the magnificent diversity of Los Angeles, the place seems to have a similar police department image as a southern city when it comes to interracial relations.

I would say, though, that I would not want to be a cop in Los Angeles dealing with what they have to deal with today though, so I'm not implying that L.A.P.D. today is a brewtal repressive regeme of some kind. I'm just saying why come they and other cities don't carry the ball and chain of their brewtality of the 60s like Birmingham does? :lecture:

They claim Affirmative Action is reverse discrimination. But if we get rid of it across the board, we'll likely lose a lot of oppurtunities we should have because there are still some good ole boys in high positions.

This type of legislation is produced to target the growing Latino population here in the state. Unfortunately it is affecting us first. The conservatives main agenda is to curtail Latino movement because they know that they will be the majority in the state so they produce legislation to try to stop the gains that minorities are making. True this state is Liberal but there is much between the lines.
They don't do much to show what went on here in the 50's and 60's, every once in a while they will have a documentary but it is local. Los Angeles city libraries have a lot of literature on what went down. To outsiders looking at L.A.P.D the force may seem like that, I have ties to the force so I see things a lot different.

I'm doing my literature review now and the interesting thing about AA in California is not are regular folks affected....the number of convicted felons looking for jobs are affected...the numbers are crazy.

I saw a article the other day how since it was banned, the numbers of white females and males have dropped even lower in schools. It actually hurt them more than anyone else. The number of Asian students rose high. Be careful of what you ask for because it will be given to you.

so true, I work with guy in Corona who graduated from UC Irvine, he says that they joked that UCI stood for University of Chinese Immigrants. If you step on the campus of UCI, UCLA, Cal Poly Pomona, and many others it seems like you have traveled too far west with the number of asian students.

It is a globalized world now, either you compete or go home.
